Sappers were part of trench warfare. Each side tried to tunnel under the opposite sides trenches, to undermine them. Literally under-mining. Soldiers who had mining experience were sent, it was one of the most dangerous jobs

From what I've read the Sappers were an interesting combo of those with mining experience, but also those with the balls to voluntarily do it... doesn't get more dangerous than that.

23:46 - Thomas Shelby was a tunneller, these were the men that were respected by all branches of the forces...they dug tunnels beneath the enemy lines and laid explosives beneath them...
@SpectrumAnalysis
@SpectrumAnalysis 6 ай бұрын
Btw, to connect the dots that it took me too long to connect: The brim of a hat is called the peak. They use the razors in their hat peaks to blind people that oppose them. Hence, The Peaky Blinders. Also some historical context, during WW1 one of the only ways that they perceived they could make progress against the stalemate that trench warfare created was known as "Mine Warfare" which we see in Tommy's dreams. The idea was to dig underneath the enemy trench and stuff the mine with several tonnes of explosives to lift the trench, the ground below it, and all the men inside it several hundred feet into the air and create an opening to charge through. Several huge craters are still visible in the French and Belgian countryside as evidence of these mines, and one unexploded mine even got struck by lightning a few years ago, killing a cow which still counts as a casualty of the war all these years later. In reality this tactic rarely worked and one of the most terrifying situations to fight in was created, as both sides dug these mines. Men who frequently were miners first and soldiers second had to dig, knowing their tunnels could be within centimetres of the enemy's tunnels, and they had to use listening techniques and primitive technology to both detect the enemy and avoid him. Sometimes this would be holding an iron rod in your teeth and sticking it into the soft clay to sense vibrations nearby, it was this crude. If two tunnels dug into each other, however, the bloodiest and most frantic battles of the war would take place. In a narrow trench, maces made of emptied grenades on sticks, sharpened shovels and knives with brass knuckles built into the handles were used since bayonetted rifles were too unwieldy. In the mines, only knives were usable, and frequently pistols were only rarely available, with some men sawing off rifles for a quick one-shot method of defence. There are several books on the subject, and one very effective film called "Beneath Hill 60" which covers the topic very well. The final battle scene of that film sticks with me even now. That scene and this series captures one of the most heart-breaking elements of the war in general, that some of the most horrific tactics, inventions, and actions of the war were ultimately useless in ending the war and men had to suffer and die in the most painful ways for absolutely no reason.

The dreams.... During WW1 both sides used miners to tunnel under No Man's Land to the enemy trenches. Usually they would stop just short of the enemy trench, pack the tunnel end with explosives. The detonation was usually followed up with an assault directed against the 'disorganized' area. Occasionally opposing tunnelers would stumble into each other or hear the others digging.... The trick was to ambush the opposition in very narrow dark confines.

Natalie you are going to love this series. No spoilers from me, but trust me it gets better and better. Also the caps the guys all wear with the peaked front (kinda like newsboy caps) were referred to in the slang as peakies. The guys sewed the blades into them and in a fight would swing them at their enemies, always aiming at the eyes. Thus, the Peaky Blinders. You are going to love the characters more and more as you get to know them. trust me this series is worth a 30+ minute reaction for each episode. Enjoy!!

In WWI, it was the job of tunnelers to dig underneath enemy positions to outflank them. They often died due to tunnel collapses or running into enemy tunnelers. It was the dirtiest job, in the bloodiest war, and Tommy and his brothers survived where very few others did. This is why he is so highly respected, even among other veterans.

Remember that back when this movie took place, workers rights were both sunk in the mud and dying. Communists were honestly the best hope you had at rallying other workers and fighting for your right to be represented. True communists who fought for the smallest man on the totem pole to be treated properly…to have their lives protected…constantly harassed by the cops under order by the government to shut them down. It was thankless work for him to rally people. He risked everything for ideology, and I respect the hell out of his type back then. The only reason we have some of the workplace protections we do is because of people like him who risked imprisonment and torture by his own government.

Hi all, I live in a part of the UK pretty close to the Midlands where PB is set. I’ve read several books about the story behind the show, and as far as it being based on true events, it’s mostly fiction with some references to real life events. Peaky blinders as Birmingham (or Brummie) street folk knew them, didn’t refer to a specific group of well dressed organised crime families with well tailored suits and razor blade flat caps. Rather it was a local term for the average savage hooligan or street ruffian who’d form street gangs for each Birmingham area, cause local trouble, throwing stones at the police, street fighting, pitch and toss type games, so called sloggers which is a term for someone who could strike the heaviest blows in a boxing ring, swearing in public and so on. They also weren’t well dressed and certainly were not respected by locals. And the part about them wearing disposable razors in their caps is very likely fiction passed down and made sensational by stories reported in the always very sensational newspapers. Instead, the very first appearance of Thomas Shelby is the best reference to why they were called peaky blinders, because they wore their caps tilted so that the peak of it covered an eye. They were indeed rounded up by organised police with the help of some people not too departed from Sam Neill’s character, but most importantly, this was all done and dusted pre-WW1 and by the 1920s they were a thing of the past. What the show takes a bit more from is the group known as the Birmingham Boys, who did engage in illegal bookmaking, smuggling, bribery, hijacking, robberies and the like, founded by Billy Kimber who was a real individual but he was a local Brummie, not London born and bred like in this show. It’s still a great piece of TV, but I thought I’d make that clear going into this show. Anyone wanting further reference to this should go read Carl Chinn’s excellent books, he’s a proud old Brummie historian who’s a descendant of a peaky blinder.
