The copper who's actor's name you can't think of is Sam Neill. Tommy's flashback was to the tunnel war in WWI. Both sides would dig tunnels under each other's trenches with the aim of either planting HUGE bombs under them (look up Messines Ridge to see what it looked like when that worked) or stopping the enemy from doing it to theirs. Sometimes teams of men from both sides would meet underground and then there'd be a fight in pitch blackness in four foot square tunnels with knives and shovels. Sometimes one side would tunnel _past_ the other and then plant a small bomb next to their tunnel that would collapse it and seal them in, leaving them to suffocate. If that's what Danny was doing htem it's no wonder he's got "shell shock" (PTSD). That would fry anyone's brain. I've only read a book about it and it made my skin crawl and gave me nightmares.

You two are going to love this. Britain is a mixture of despair and hedonism in 1919 in the aftermath of the Great War (WWI). Returning soldiers, newly minted revolutions and criminal gangs are fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. One of the most powerful gangs of the time is the Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family. But Thomas has bigger ambitions than just running the streets. When a crate of guns goes missing, he recognizes an opportunity to advance in the world because crime may pay but legitimate business pays better. Trying to rid Britain of its crime is Inspector Chester Campbell, who arrives from Belfast to try to achieve that goal. Enjoy the rest of the series.

@14:19 I've never tailored before but I've made a few shoes with help. With boots you start with a last which is usually a piece of wood in the shape of the void you want in your shoe. I've seen some cosplay folks make something like a last for clothes by making a semi ridged body cast out of cellophane and duct tape. After cutting themselves out, they stuffed the custom shape with paper. They then had a template to work from when choosing and testing patterns with paper or cheap cloth, and something to pin the material in place/shape when assembling the final design.

Hi ladies. No spoilers from me, but I will tell you a couple of things. For one, I would rate this series up there with Deadwood and The Sopranos. This 1st episode was a lot, but it only gets better. As for the gangs name, The flat caps that were worn back then were known as peak caps or peakys. The gang made alterations to theirs and used them as weapons. Typically in a serious fight, they would strike at an opponents eyes. Thus, the Peaky Blinders. Like any really great series (or movie franchise), you will get invested in the characters. Most of them are what they seem, though Tommy is a brilliant strategist as well. So just buckle up and pay attention. By order of The Peaky Blinders. ; ))

This series is loosely based on real gang, by the same name, but the actual family depicted here is fictional, and in reality, the real Peaky Blinders were mainly active around the 1890s and 1900s, and did not exist beyond 1920. Some characters such as Billy Kimber are real historical figures. This saga has been transposed slightly forward in order to be set against real notable events; the aftermath of the first world war, the Irish revolution, the attempted rise of fascism in Britain etc. I won't spoil anything by going into detail. It's a brilliant and fascinating show, one of the very best of modern times, that can often be very, very dark indeed, though brutal acts of violence are more often inferred than graphic. I'm sure you will enjoy it very much.

If you don't know yet, the gang's name "Peaky Blinders" is tied to the razors in the brim of their newsboy caps, which is called a peak (historically, as safety razors weren't invented in 1919, the real Blinders sewed sharpened pennies in their caps). The term Blinders came from their signature attack, where they used the blades in their hats to slash at their target's eyes to blind them.
@gillisthom9 ай бұрын
Or, more likely, the named just come from the peaked hats they chose to wear, and any use as a weapon is a myth. Trying to slash someones eye with a blade sewn into one's cap would seem very difficult and overly complicated.

Thanks so much!! I always wondered what it was. my guess was something with your eyes and being curious/scared, people looking away when they walk past. etc

@@gillisthom In how its depicted, there's nothing complicated or difficult about attacking with the razor hat. You just take it off and swing for the face. Of course, concealed and improvised implements like razor hats are most effective if the assailant isn't aware of them. But in the case of the Peaky Blinders, they use it more as a "punishment" tool, where they make a grizzly example of anyone who dare cross them.
