Elizabeth reacting to Rain Man for the first time. Dustin Hoffman is a chameleon, and this movie feels like how parenting feels sometimes.

"Never hurt Charlie Babbitt" gets me every single time. That and the moment Charlie realizes that Raymond can't distinguish between staying with his brother and being at Wallbrook. Ray wanted both (his brother and the familiar 'home' he knew). What a reminder of how important and powerful love is.

I can remember growing up and watching this movie when I was, maybe 12. I couldn't wrap my head around autism, but it gave me an insight. Maybe 10 years later I dated a girl who's brother was autistic, she was 20 and he was mid-30's, and he acted exactly like Raymond. Not with the special abilities of math or anything but his habits and demeanor were so similar it shocked me. He fed off the emotions around him. He would call me Skeletor, because he loved the old He-Man cartoons and I have a skull tattoo on my arm. He was the one good memory I have coming out of the relationship because she ended up cheating on me a bunch, but he was such a sweet man. And the things he'd say out of nowhere would make me laugh my ass off. I hope he still remembers me because he was my buddy the 2 years I was in his life. The highlight being driving home from a movie with both of them and Dave Matthews Band comes on the radio and he starts singing along to all of "What Would You Say". After the lyric, "Don't bite the mailman.", I asked him, "Jason, would you bite the mailman?" He responded, "No, but if I was a dog I'd bite his elbow." I asked him why and he replied, "You only need one arm to deliver mail."

GReat REaction and analysis Elizabeth. Charlie has grown up alone most of his life. And the only person he was close to as a child he believes is imaginary. He's basically lost the feeling of wonder and imagination in his life in order to be a cut-throat businessman and salesman. Now face to face with the reality that his imaginary friend. So deep. Little thing I've noticed about the acting in this movie Raymond recites Who's on First by Abbott and Costello... A comedy duo who worked with a certain cadence with the straight man being most important in pushing the dialogue along. Raymond and Charlie are Abbott and Costello....its most obvious in the dinner scene as they sit at the table(sally dibbs)....their cadence is 100% mimicking Abbott and Costello

There might be truth to that. I heard it took him a year to be normal again & I remember his academy award acceptance speech which seem like he was still not fully recovered. Finally in truth he had a great career from midnight cowboy, the graduate, marathon man. Tootsie but in truth this is probably is last great role in which he never fully recovered. I love him in Runaway Jury but that movie was a modest success financially. Maybe Hook which after but he didn't stand out in that role

Hey Hey, Elizabeth. Dustin Hoffman's acting was next level in this movie. I saw him in so many of his hits like, "Tootsie", "Midnight Cowboy", "Kramer vs KRamer", "Outbreak", "The Graduate" and on and on. Hoffman has maybe 10-15 top 200 movies ever made in his filmography. As I was saying, Dawn. I saw him act like a normal person. To see him become Rain Man show me what amazing acting could be. WOW. This is the type of acting transformation that will give you goosebumps.

The inspiration for this movie came from an actual savant native to Utah named named Kim Peek. He had an incredible memory as well as well as many other extraordinary gifts that he could do with his mind. But he also had a hard time socializing. After this movie, his fame grew and it helped him become a bit more outgoing and happier to socialize. He liked being called the real life Rain Man. There are some great short documentaries on him here on youtube. He tragically passed away, but in a fortunate/unfortunate way his father and caretaker did outlive him. I think it would have been very, very hard on Kim's life and routine had his father passed before him.

One thing I didn't think about until I finished the movie was about why Ray willingly went with Charlie at the beginning of the movie. He doesn't put up a fight like you'd expect him to since he's so dependent on routines. But after the hot water scene it's evident that he went with Charlie because he loves him and still sees him as his baby brother. Maybe that was obvious to everyone else but me but it didn't really dawn on me right away.

"What you have to understand is, four days ago he was only my brother in name. And this morning we had pancakes." This is a great family movie about brothers, a rare subject matter for Hollywood. As much as I detest how they treat General Custer, I think Dustin Hoffman's performance in Little Big Man (1970) is his absolute best. If I wasn't a student of history, I'd buy that movie's revisionist agitprop. I still recommend that movie thoroughly. Fun Fact: The elderly man in the waiting room who talks on and on about the Pony Express is Byron P. Cavnar, an 89-year-old local who was in the waiting room when the crew arrived to film there. He got to talking on his favorite subject, the Pony Express, and director Barry Levinson got such a kick out of it that he let Cavnar keep on talking as the cameras rolled. All his dialogue was spontaneous and not scripted. Best Ending Fact: Dustin Hoffman fought for the ending where Raymond goes back to Wallbrook, even though the screenwriters both wanted him to end up with Charlie. Hoffman thought it wouldn't be true to Raymond's character if they had him stay. Historical Fact: What Raymond Babbitt says about Qantas was, and still is true. From 1921 to now, Qantas has never lost any jet airliners. They even promoted one of the movie's writers to first class once when he travelled on their airline.

This movie deservedly won the Oscar for Best Picture and Hoffman won Best Actor, but Tom Cruise’s performance is just as important. Tom Cruise is going to be remembered for his action blockbusters: Top Gun, Edge of Tomorrow, and the Mission Impossible franchise. He has shown that he is a top notch dramatic actor in his smaller films like this one, Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July, The Last Samurai, Magnolia, Collateral, and The Color of Money.

Like Paul Newman, I think Tom Cruise's obituary will not narrow him to one film. His had such a breadth of film successes in various genres. Paul Newman is a good comparison as both handsome guys well into their 60s and neither really had a downturn in their career, always a box office draw.

I love this movie and love your reaction to it!!!! I especially love the way you have a more understanding view of Charlie - I often see people view him quite harshly, and I think they miss a lot of his character nuance. A few points about Charlie - he didn’t necessarily stop talking to his father because he wouldn’t let him drive the car - it was more than that. It was that he felt abandoned and unloved by his father, who left Charlie in jail for two days. Charlie talks about how nothing he ever did was good enough for his father. Taking the car was likely him acting out in an attempt to get attention from his dad. Instead of getting any attention, concern, or love - his father just left him in jail. And beyond that, it seems his father never truly understood that Charlie stopped speaking with him because he felt neglected. The fact that in his letter he frames it as “you overreacted and ended the relationship purely out of pettiness over a car” is a dick move, and shows that the father really had no idea what that car incident was truly about - Charlie needing/wanting love and attention from his father. This also makes Charlie’s reaction to the letter make more sense: for him, those words aren’t the loving words of a father. They’re the words of a father that neglected him throughout his entire childhood, and then when the car incident happened and it was the last straw for Charlie after years of feeling neglected - his father forever used that situation as a way to blame him for the relationship ending. His father refused to acknowledge that his emotional neglect was the REAL reason that he lost his son. When you look at it from that point of view, that whole letter is basically a slap in the face and Charlie’s anger is 100% justified. The idea that the father really did neglect Charlie is made stronger when we learn what really happened with Raymond: the motel bathtub “hot water” scene implies that Raymond did, at one point, actually hurt Charlie with hot water. That’s why Raymond was sent away from the family - to protect Charlie. This is a perfect motive for the father resenting Charlie and refusing to give him the love and attention that children need. It makes me believe that he neglected Charlie as a way to punish him. And on top of that, the mother died around the same time, which probably didn’t help the situation at all. The father had to choose one son over the other, losing one son to an institution and then losing his wife, and all that was left was Charlie. Poor Charlie likely became the target of all the father’s anger and resentment, and it resulted in a child being neglected. As someone with narcissists in the family, it’s pretty likely that their father was a narcissist. When you take into account everything I’ve already mentioned, that final letter actually comes across like a narcissistic taking one last shot at someone who ‘wronged them.’ Narcissists always make themselves out to be the victim: they will mistreat a person, and when that person finally snaps and retaliates (or leaves the narcissist behind), they will say and do anything to gaslight and try to make that person feel like THEY are the one being unreasonable and the narcissist is the one who was ‘wronged.’ If the father truly neglected Charlie, then his letter is just another attempt to paint himself as a victim and make Charlie out to be the one responsible for the relationship ending. Kind of a “look at me, the poor father who’s son abandoned him for no good reason” vibe. It’s hard to know for sure, but there are many signs that their father was not a kind man and probably neglected Charlie as a way to punish him for things he was in no way responsible for. Think of it from this perspective: a parent neglects and doesn’t provide their child with a healthy connection, the child acts out as a response, and the parent gets angry at the child for acting out instead of realizing that they themselves are the source of the problem. That’s the vibe I get from the father, and why I think he’s likely a narcissist. Once you realize all of this, Charlie’s behavior makes a lot more sense. Charlie was written to be ‘emotionally autistic,’ meaning that he struggles to connect with people in a way that parallels autism. This stunted emotional growth likely stems from his childhood: from losing his mother at a young age, and having a neglectful narcissist as a father. The lack of healthy relationship and connection would definitely result in the type of person that Charlie is - someone with stunted emotional development. Your point about Charlie having always been alone is spot-on! His inability to connect purposefully mirrors Raymond’s inability to connect, and the whole point of the movie is that throughout their journey BOTH of them form a connection, and this teaches Charlie how to connect and form a healthy relationship - likely, something he’d never truly experienced before. At one point in the movie, someone says this about Raymond: “I don’t think people are his first priority” and as it’s said, Charlie is shown on screen. It illustrates the similarity between Charlie and his autistic brother, that Charlie is emotionally handicapped in ways that make him parallel to Raymond. I think what fully shows his growth as a character is that when his girlfriend Susanna shows up in Vegas, Charlie is so happy and open and affectionate; suddenly eager for connection and invested in their relationship. It’s such a stark contrast to how he treated their relationship earlier in the movie. Through his experience with Raymond, he himself healed and learned how to open his heart to vulnerability and truly communicate with (and therefore connect with) others. This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time, and I can never watch it without crying. So glad you enjoyed it and hopefully my little essay helps give Charlie’s character a bit more context! As someone who really, really relates to his character, I always like to give his character some love - Hoffman gets the attention that he absolutely deserves, but Cruise can get overlooked and sometimes Charlie’s character isn’t appreciated as much as he should be. :)

Raymond's character is actually based off from Kim Peek who is a real-life savant. There is a youtube documentary about him, if not more than one now. He has a library with probably thousands of books in it, all of which he has read and memorized nearly 100% of what he read. When he reads a book, his left eye reads the left page and his right eye reads the right page at the same time and his brain pieces them together. He remembers a ridiculous amount of stuff. Brilliant mentally, but there are a lot of simple things that he likely doesn't do very well.

I heard Sia sing Iko Iko on the Tonight Show with Natalie Portman and Jimmy Fallon, but your version might be better!!! I would love to hear you sing Chandelier🙂🙂🙂 Hoffman is really good in Kramer vs Kramer with Meryl Streep too.

The fart scene in the phone both was real; Dustin had actually farted and he and Tom improvised.

im sorry to be like this but if you saw it years ago then its not your first time watching it. i dont care if you remember nothing even when you start watching it. you cant say its your first time watching something when it literally is not.

Hoffman won the Oscar for best actor, but I agree with film critic Roger Ebert, who said at the time that Cruise deserved it more, as he had a much more difficult job, as he had to transform from a self-centered go-getter into a less self-centered, more humble person, whereas Hoffman's character was literally unable to evolve due to his condition, so it was the same character from start to finish.

But, does that mean it's not good acting? Just because the character is linear doesn't mean it isn't good. Forrest Gump doesn't have an arc. Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men doesn't have an arc. They're still amazing performances.

Charlie Babbitt is impatient, arrogant, and selfish. He's also a young man who left his father at 16, a father he feels did him wrong (and to be honest, maybe he did). He needs to learn humility, patience, and to lose his sense of entitlement -- which is ultimately the character arc he has in the film. It's not easy for someone like him to deal with special needs people, much less care for them all day - something he ultimately realizes. But he does eventually learn about his brother, and (hopefully) goes on to be a better overall person after his experience with Raymond.

36:11 I do not quite understand, why people think, that for sick people is hospitals better than for well people. You would voluntarily go the hospital, and let the doctors and nurses to lock you in there? You probably would say that for sick people is the best solution, but i guarantee you, that for sick people is this solution even worse than for well people (in another words, well people or normal people if you will, better endures be locked somewhere, than sick people). People have very distorted image, how it looks behind walls of that hospitals, but in many ways they are worse than prisons (from reasons that are for another long debate).

Speaking as a high functioning autistic person, people with severe autism often can't function without regular routine and minimal change of environment, not to mention it can be very draining emotionally for families to essentially live their life around a severely autistic person. I know I can be quite difficult at times for my own mother to be around, especially if I am unable to do something which I'm hyper focused on doing. An example would be something like Christmas shopping, I try to spend the minimum amount of time in shops due to crowds and the noise which can get overstimulating, so if I were to shop during Christmas season it would be basically impossible, and if I'm unable to shop myself before the Christmas season I enter a phase of self isolation and feeling sad because I put my mind towards focussing on something which i was unable to do. Imagine something as simple as that but instead of being self isolated I were to lash out and be violent, or if I were to run away. Seeing how normies usually like to know what "special powers" autistic people have I'll share mine, I have a fantastic memory, I remember when I was 6 years old having been picked up from school by my mum and eating a meringue sat in front of the TV watching Ricky Lake, or I remember 7 months ago my boss asking me to remind him about 12 baguettes in the freezer (so it's not all positives because of annoying useless shit like that).
