Something a lot of people miss the first times through... at the end of the fight when Rocky is yelling for Adrian, and she's pushing her way through the crowd, she gets bumped and loses her hat. When she finally makes it into the ring and gets to him, this man, this man who just accomplished an unimaginable feat, the most important thing he's ever done in his life, this man who has been beaten nearly senseless... this man is so into her that the very first thing he says to her is 'where's your hat?'. Simply amazing. If you want a real treat, take a look at the making of this film. Its absolutely fascinating and overcame a dozen obstacles to get made at all.

The movie starts in November of 1975. Meaning on January 1st it will be 1976. The bicentennial. I remember so many products using that angle in the late 70's.

I like to point out that the movie has no "bad guy" even the loan shark gave him cash and never expected anything for it. Paulie clearly loved his sister just didn't know how to express it, his only idea is to push her away. Micky was right and became a real asset

In 1976 we celebrated our 200th Birthday for the whole year. It was called the Bicentennial celebration. We even had special quarters printed/stamped up that year. That's why Creed was dressed as George Washington. That is how Stallone got the idea for the movie, he watched Ali beat some bad boxer and placed this story line with that event. PRESTO. Edit, I don't think he pushed her into a corner, he knew she was shy and awkward and he had to overcome that or else she would have been an old maid forever, her brother made her feel like a loser.

Quarters, half-dollars, and dollar coins were all special for the bicentennial. And they were minted for two years -- the 1975 and 1976 coins all had "1776-1976" on them. So technically there were no 1975 quarters halves or dollars.

The "bad" boxer in question was Chuck Wepner. He was by no means a bad boxer but he was not particularly notable and he was seen as just a stepping stone. But Wepner went toe to toe with Ali, despite being thoroughly outboxed, only to lose in the final round with just seconds remaining. It was Wepner's tenacity that served as the inspiration for Rocky's perseverance against Creed.

I think what makes the apartment scene with him and Adrian work, is the fact that we have already established through the beginning of the movie that Rocky is a good guy. He picks a bum up off the street bring them inside he walks little Marie to her house, he doesn’t break the guys thumb, all these things lead you to believe the Rocky is a good guy, so he wouldn’t do anything bad to Adrian

Impressive he wrote the story and held out to be the starring actor. No need to overthink the scene. The dance was respectful. He sensed her shyness without objections. Someone has to be an initiator otherwise no one gets together anymore. Also, Pauly is family. He is the awkward uncle that really messes up all the time. He is family though. She solved the issue by moving out. There is always a time in family when it is time to spread your wings.

So glad you liked the movie! It is at heart a love story. Regarding the apartment scene, I think it is important to treat Adrienne as the 30 year old woman that her character is and to not view her as a teenage waif in need of protection. In my opinion, Rocky - despite his physical size - is in no way a threatening character. They were lucky to find each other.

Interesting concept. Good reaction. To me, the meat of the episode is the dark night of the soul that Rocky has before the fight, when he realizes he can't beat Apollo. So he changes the terms of the contest - he cant win - so he changes his goal to just take it. To prove "He's not just some bum from the neighborhood" ... His victory was to finish the fight on his feet.

I appreciated the honesty. Too many people are satisfied with a shallow, one-sided understanding of this. It's good for people to leave their comfort zone, but it's wrong to hurt people against their will. These two facts exist in opposition and it's our job as friends, family, and lovers to strike that balance such that our loved ones can flourish and grow into better people.

The apartment scene is only contentious in the 2020's. Twitter would encourage her to sue for sexual harassment for sure!! - But it's innocent, respectful and was a great way for a shy girl to come out of her shell and an extrovert boxer to get together with his crush... and two people to fall in love.

@@dpax2195 Nah, it was an innocent moment between two adults who knew more or less not to make a bigger deal of it than it actually was. It's something people today could learn from. She needed him to be persistent and break her out of her shell, but he also knew how to ease her into it. If she really didn't want it to get that far she would've made a bigger fuss over it and he definitely wouldn't have continued on with his advances.

Even today, nothing has changed. Lawyers actually dissected the scene and nothing even questionable happened. I can't find the KZbin video anymore, but I remember that the guy said there's nothing illegal about him blocking the door unless she asks him to let her out and he doesn't. And saying he wants to kiss her is implied consent if he gives her time to say no and she doesn't. Basically, if you think that Adrian was a victim, you're saying she's not a competent adult.

Rocky’s first run when he got cramps actually reminded me of when I first started boxing. I used to just lift weights and didn’t have much stamina. Then my coach told me to put down the weights and when I went on my first long run I felt like Rocky there with the cramps. Then after a while of running I built up stamina and felt like Rocky running up the stairs in the montage.

If the scenes before the apartment scene did not show Rocky's empathy and his overall good nature, that apartment scene would have had a different tone. 1976 was America's birthday but you probably figured that out. Also, I like how they gave Paulie additional backstory by just showing his military picture on the dresser. It seems he had intentions of a future but it just didn't go his way.

New subscriber, great reaction! Modern filmmakers overuse the close-up and jump cutting, to the point that anybody under 40 probably thinks that's how movies should be made. There's about a hundred years behind saying that's not the case, and Rocky is a great example of wonderful directing that composes each shot and lets us know where we are and what's going on in the background, not just what is in the main character's eyes, which in older films, you will find something very rich as opposed to some modern films in which a close-up of a face is just the blank recitation of lines.

Great reaction and commentary. To me, one of the best scenes is when Rocky is getting his feelings off of his chest as Micky is out of sight down the staircase. Sylvester Stallone's early movies showed his acting skill way more than his later movies I think. A good movie to see that in is "First Blood". A lot think that movie is only an action film, but its not. There's a scene in there that's just heartbreaking, and reminds me of the scene in this movie.

I first watched this movie when it came out in theaters in the 70's (The one screen per theater type). However, as I have watched it over the years, I have always learned something new each time. This time, I've learned that Pauley is a Navy veteran. In his and Adrian's house, there is a low hutch along the wall, between the living room and the kitchen. On top of that hutch sits a picture of Pauley wearing a Naval Class-A uniform.

I really hate saying this, but modern culture has really ruined me. The obsession with race has warped my perceptions of movies and it sickens me. I love how race was never once addressed in this movie. The champ is black, the underdog is white, and NOBODY GIVES A SINGLE SOLITARY SHIT! "Refreshing" doesn't even cover this bliss. There are so many great things about this film. I think of it in the same kind of way as Good Will Hunting. An amazing piece of writing, with characters as real and complex as anyone you might meet on the street. A story composed almost entirely of gray area, where the characters are the result of their lifetime of experiences and hardships. Of course the best thing about it is the dynamic between Adrian and Rocky. A guy with far more to offer than the world ever gave him credit for, and the woman (also discounted by those around her) who is his foundation and the catalyst that allows him to reach that potential. It's a beautiful thing.

Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky in three and a half days, shortly after watching the championship match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner that took place at Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, on March 24, 1975. His best display of his acting abilities in my opinion was the movie "Cop Land" . It wasn't his usual role. He potrayed the character he plays extremely well.

Funny story from Henry Winkler (who played ‘The Fonz’ on Happy Days) - was friends with Stallone. He actually brought Stallone’s story to ABC and the network was going to make it a TV series. But they wanted someone else in the lead. He got the story back for Stallone, who ultimately made the “Rocky” movie franchise. So in a nutshell, the Fonz saved Rocky.

100% agree. Until I watched reactors, I never in my life heard anyone say anything about the apartment. Times must have really changed. I'm a child of the 70s and middle-aged now, but i'm one of those fortunate men who's had an easy life when it comes to women. From this experience, I can offer this: there is a subtle, subconscious back-and-forth (mating) dance at play, for lack of better words. From a guy point of view, here is dance in the movie: 1.rocky asks her out at the store 2.she says doesnt say anything (but...DOESNT SAY NO) - yellow light = try again later 3.rocky asks her out again at the store 4.she doesnt say anything, BUT when he leaves say "good night, Rocky." - yellow light = try again later...but the dance is in motion...she escalated slightly 5.he asks Paulie about his sister ... She clearly is not so bothered by rockie that she complains to paulie - yellow light 6.goes to her house, asks her out = she gets dressed up and goes out with him - green light....she likes him ENOUGH to spend time when she doesnt have to (on the job) 7.they talk. get comfortable. share personal, vulnerable information. she is clearly NOT repulsed by proximity or his personality 8.asks her inside - she goes inside - brighter green light (she COULD have said NO...clearly, there's something in it for her to go inside...someone as small as her would never go into the apartment of a man that powerfully built if she felt the SLIGHTEST fear for her safety. Rocky doesnt know this, but by her accepting, she non-verbally conveys this. 9.asks her to sit next to him....here's the SUBTLE THING I NOTICED....she does NOT move away...instead she moves CLOSER to him to tell him WHY she wont sit on the couch. if she DIDNT like Rocky, should wouldnt care about his feelings, she would have said "no" and moved AWAY from him....OR not went in the apt to begin with. THe bottom line is that there are EIGHT instances where he expresses interest and each time, she escalates the interaction WHEN SHE DOESNT HAVE TO. She could have said NO at any time: at the store. at home. at the ice rink. SHe had MANY times to say no. After NOT saying no so many times, she's (subconsciously) sending a message that she's ok with him getting closer to her. It's part of the dance to recognize the significance of NOT saying no. The reality is that greatness sits on the other side of fear....unless you let the fear get too great. In that case, a person has no one but themselves for lost opportunity...with either gender.

First, Adrian did say “no” a few times to even going into Rocky’s apartment. She said flat out “I’m not comfortable”. You’re talking like reactors are just now making this up. The apartment scene is cringy. There was a time when people thought marital rape wasn’t a thing. There was a time when people said “but colored people also like segregation”. Times change, our understanding of the human experience changes. Now we can, at least decent people can, look back and say I’m glad times have changed because I don’t want to live in those conditions anymore. If you don’t believe toxic masculinity exists in some form, you’re part of the problem.

Great reaction to Rocky. Like the character, this movie was an underdog too. Stallone's script was sought after, but they didn't want him to star in it. He was broke and was reportedly offered $350,000 to sell the script outright, but refused and took a fraction of that to. play Rocky. Paradoxically the plot point that many people found unrealistic, actually happened. Muhammed Ali had previously chosen to fight an overweight local fighter once to save an already promoted title fight, and gave a relative unknown a shot at the world heavyweight title. What's fascinating about this movie, is not movie alone, it's what's behind it. Stalone himself wrote the script, and on interview he said that it's connected with his own struggles. Also he was very poor at that state, and even sold his own Dog for 50$ to buy food and pay rent. But after a movie, he bought the dog back for 15.000$

Fun fact. Rocky and Star Wars were released 6 months apart. Star Wars obviously changed special effects and made the fantasy/sci-fi genre very legit. The steady cam was invented for Rocky. Before cameras had to be on cranes, mounted, etc.... This is why you get the iconic ring and the run up the stairs as the camera man is running up with him.

In 1976 the Bicentennial was a BIG Deal. The 4th that year was off the charts but basically in a lot of ways the Bicentennial was celebrated all year long. I was 8 at the time and still remember a lot of parts of it. So yeah technically in the eyes of a lot of people at the time The Bicentennial start 12:01am Jan 1 1976. Also Rocky 'won' in the 14th round. He had put up a hell of a fight...way more than anyone expected. Even Mick his manager was telling him to stay down (its his job he doesn't want to see Rock get 'hurt permanent'). He gets up because he has something to prove to the only person that matters in the end, himself.

I saw this when it first hit the theaters, and at the time it was important for many reasons, the film was set during the bicentennial in the movie and in real life, so the levels of patriotism were off the charts. We were all able to relate to the character and the story. Good times. The street corner singer with the curly hair was Frank Stallone Jr., Sylvester's brother, who is a singer in real life, he had a couple of albums back in the day. The timekeeper (the guy that rings the bell) with the white hair during the fight with Apollo, was Frank Stallone Sr., his dad. Butkus was Sylvester's dog in real life. One of Apollo's guards was Michael Dorn (uncredited) who played Worf on Star Trek : The Next Generation. There were several stars that were background players, even Joe Frazier was in the movie (one of the greatest fighters to have ever lived. There's a lot of stories about the film that a lot of people don't know about, too much to list here. Remember, don't judge the apartment scene by today's standards, this was forty-six years ago, a totally different time and way of thinking. Glad you got to see it. Great review.

Sylvester Stallone before this was also in a movie with Henry Winkler called " The Lord's Of Flatbush ". Also the actor who plays " Mickey " was also in the Batman tv series as the Penguin . And also in a Twilight Zone episode back in the days . As far as Adrian , she was also in the movie " The Godfather " as Michaels sister . This movie is actually a love story between a man and a woman. Boxing has very little to do with it. It's just things that Rocky has to do to make ends meet. Like boxing & working for a loan shark .

The studio wanted Burt Reynolds for the part of Rocky. Stallone put his foot down and said, no, it's my story, I wrote it and if I ain't Rocky we ain't gonna make the picture. The studio acquiesced and movie history was written. Oh, and the turtles, Cuff and Link are alive and well and staying with Stallone.😊✌

If you watch the ending again, the music drowns out the announcer calling who won the fight. The director is saying that the movie isn’t about who won, isn’t even about Boxing, it’s about Rocky and Adrian.

Just stumbled upon your channel and boy do I hope you continue making more reactions. I really like the format you have of commenting during the movie and discussing at the end. The way you seem to have an open mind with the movie and make interesting comments from a woman's perspective. But they are logical and well thought out as opposed to emotional. In other words, you just don't automatically hate something but try to analyze it. Like the scene were Rocky got Adrian to kiss her. Also a nice touch with hubby? asking you questions. And I did enjoy the joke he made about you bringing him out of his shell. Maybe you should call the channle, "movies with Adrian." LOL.
