It's funny due to the stigma of Rambo in pop culture, when people actually get around to watching the movie, they're not ready for it.

It's always funny watching that mental re-calibration happen in real time with people who only know of the sequels, and often only by reputation at that. You can see their wheels turning and at some point they're always like "Oh, hang on. This is, like, a real movie...". And it is! This later retitling kind of cheapens it, in a way, because being called FIRST BLOOD already helps differentiate it from the sequels, which are a separate breed of animal all together. This whole RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD thing annoys me more than it probably should.

I love watching reactions to this for exactly that reason. I first saw this in 1984 when I was 5 which didn’t seem weird at the time but thinking about it now is a little nuts,maybe my parents were just irresponsible🤪. Anyway I feel fortunate to have got in on the ground floor so to speak and watch the perception of the character evolve. I like all the sequels but this is still the best and doesn’t feel like a movie that lends itself to sequels(especially if you read the book). Speaking of book,sorry for writing a novel as a reply😂🫡

*Fun Facts: When the movie came out, it was not called “Rambo” only “First Blood”. It’s only once the name of Rambo became synonymous with tough action heroes that the studios started adding the name Rambo to the sequel; and retroactively to this movie* *Also, the role of John Rambo, though now so recognizable today, was turned down by most of the leading men of the 80s. On top of that, when Stallone saw the movie for the first time, it was almost a 3 hour long cut and he hated his performance to the point that he thought it was going to ruin his career. So, he asked the director to cut out nearly all of his dialogue, which not only helped reduce the runtime, but help create the iconic character of Rambo, as the traumatized, strong silent archetype (the term PTHD did not exist yet at that time and was denied as existing under any other name by top military brass; in fact, this movie played an enormous part in making the general public aware and sensible to the plight of veterans, even if it still take more than a decade before PTSD was a household word)* *This movie still surprises many reactors because John Rambo is not even the shadow of the action archetype that the character will become in subsequent movies: His story is much more dramatic and heavy here; which is why this movie remains the best and most iconic of the franchise, in my humble opinion (Don’t get me wrong, the next sequel and the others after are fun and worth seeing, but they do not have the psychological depth that this one has, some try but don’t come close to this, and become much more of the typical 80s action genre that people think of when talking about this cinematic era and genre)*

I strongly recommend watching the whole series. Some parts may seem a little hokie, but I think as a whole this is one of the best movie series ever made. Some of the sequels were a bit more light hearted and focused more on the action (Rambo 2 used to be my favorite, until Rambo IV came out), but the whole story of the character as he grows older with Sylvester Stallone, just has that somehing so pure. This really is a character with a sense of a living past and a tormented soul.

When this movie came out PTSD didn't "exist"... yes, it has ALWAYS existed, but it was ignored and help for it was virtually non=existent. Also, Vietnam vets were often not considered "real vets" because they "lost the war" and "real vets" were winners (WWII). It's a very sad thing. One of the things said by the nation's leaders after the first Gulf War, was that the Gulf War "erased the 'stain' of Vietnam" :(
@tapoemt39953 сағат бұрын
It was Shell shock, not PTSD. That came with the softening of language, like little people, special needs etc.
@mokane86Сағат бұрын
@@tapoemt3995people suffering from war trauma has been recognized since ancient war time. In more modern history with the world war shellshock the patients were treated with more respect and dignity and effort than in the post Vietnam era. In that era people were probably more properly treated with a lengthy retreat to some lake view room for a few weeks of quiet and reflection and some counseling but then the expectation to rejoin society and function proper. With some community understanding if you fall into a deep lost stare for a moment. As of today we are most certainly over coddling and over drugging. They are diagnosing people with PTSD from non combat bootcamp difficulties and from failing some exam… But this film does a good job in highlighting how fully abandoned the late era end of war Vietnam vets were. Without support and with mixed emotions including assigned contempt for the Nation’s mismanagement of the conflict.

This is a rather unorthadox _First Blood_ reaction. 99% of people (including me many years ago) are shocked when they watch this film for the first time because all their pre conceived notions of the character from pop culture osmosis are based around the events of the sequels. James on the other hand is going to this just like the audience on opening night, whose only frame of reference was "an action film" and "its the guy from Rocky". He is just so adorable!

I also always say that it has a reputation as being so violent but as you noted, only one person was actually killed and that was an accident. The movie is actually only called First Blood. They didn’t start using Rambo in the title till years later. You might like a movie with George Clooney called The Peacemaker.

In my country, this movie single-handedly became the bad-boy symbol of extreme movie violence after it premiered, and it got lambasted by all the talking heads and all the opinions people and so on. Completely misunderstood, by the way. Yes, there's violence in it, gunfire, explosions, destruction and so on, but as you mention, nobody is actually killed outright - Galt, the dumb murderous cop who didn't strap himself in fell accidentally to his death (and was obviously mentally disturbed, probably also suffering from PTSD after having fought in Korea together with the town Sheriff - this isn't mentioned in the movie IIRC, so it probably comes from the book) - there's a bunch of whole other layers to this movie than just the violence. These talking heads people couldn't see the forest for all the trees, there's social commentary stuff easily visible here if you just have an open mind; the way cops and judges treat poor people/vagrants; the way society treats people returning from a horrific war, and so on. In Vietnam, John Rambo was trusted with million-dollar equipment (in 1970s money!), back home he can't hold a job parking cars. The difference in how a person is valued in either situation is extremely stark. Then add Rambo's PTSD angle on top. Military brass and politicians knew about PTSD - it had been described medically at least as early as WWI (then calling it "shellshock".) So, those in power in government and the military chose to look away, deliberately, and for all intents abandon afflicted soldiers because that's cheaper. Or well, it doesn't show up directly on the military's budget anyway - people suddenly going nutso and shooting up their workplace or family or something like that has a cost associated with them too - it's simply indirect, and may not show up for years and years either. I'd say this movie is actually rather profound. It has both action and depth, and the violence is by today's standards rather tame really. Nobody ought to get their britches much in a bind over that anymore methinks, particularly considering the lack of any major bodycount. :)

I would advice you to watch the rest of the movies but parts two and three are much lighter emotionally, just gold digging action. But the fourth is, just a personal opinion, the real closure of the series. The fifth is not bad but it's just a stretch that I don't find necessary, the fourth is packed with good action but again it's a vet movie with a strong anti war message like the first one.
