I took my son to see this movie when it came out, he was six at the time. I had never before or since seen him jump out of his seat in the middle of a movie because he was so excited - that final fight was a great theater moment between the two of us. It's too bad they never made a sequel but better that then risk a poor follow up. Great reaction, this brings back the memories.

The thing with Noisy Boy is that he has a disorder while fighting. He has pre-setting fighting moves and combos that is controlled by the voice command. He can't use regular, or standard boxing methods, to defeat Midas because he is not programmed to recognize it from his fighting data-base.
@ariqsyafwan4987 Жыл бұрын
No, he can, it proofed when Charlie ordered him to do "Right roundhouse" he followed it, if only Charlie let himself to get used to Noisy Control he could've controled him the same way he controled Atom, Noisy Boy one and biggest weakness is that sometime during his "overseas" tour his armor pieces was swapped with cheaper materials (which is how Charlie was able to got him for only 50k), that is why that first blow from Midas immedietly bend his torso armor
@ziicmadeit Жыл бұрын
@@ariqsyafwan4987so noisy boy was more bulky before?
@Wuzya Жыл бұрын
@@ariqsyafwan4987 Well the armor pieces could be a true theory, but the roundhouse is not. A roundhouse would mean many things in different martial arts. A roundhouse would mostly be a kick in Taekwondo, Karate and Kung Fu. So it's not movie error or a standard basic move in boxing as that would be called, a cross. So meaning, Noisy Boy would've known a right roundhouse as it's part of his foreign country (Japan) and also a basic pre-setting move in his data-base.
@ariqsyafwan4987 Жыл бұрын
@@Wuzya nah, Max also told him to do a "Right and Left uppercut" in Japanese and he obliged, i think Noisy control's are a lot like an RPG game, where you can fight with basic move but there are some fancy dandy combo move you can use once in a while, but Charlie not knowing how it all works just spam all those special moves that he thougt has a cool name

Fun fact: The film is loosely an adaptation of a short story called Steel by Richard Matheson. The only thing that the short and the film had in common was the robot boxing and a human basically "boxing" the robot. The short story was adapted into an episode of The Twilight Zone in the 1960s (it's actually one of many episodes that were adaptations of Richard Matheson's short stories, including Little Girl Lost and Terror at 40,000 Feet, which Spielberg himself was a involved with and had previously done an adaptation of another Matheson short story as his first film, Duel in 1971). Matheson's work is well known with two adaptations that people know, Somewhere in Time (1981) and the multiple adaptations of his novel I Am Legend.

When this movie came out, I was working at a Cinemark theater. That first week it was out we had a special event booked early one morning at our theater so the 5 openers were supposed to show up 3 hours early. I was the only one who showed along with the 2 managers and we made snack boxes and small drinks for 150 kids (8-10 yrs) to watch the Lorax. Because I showed up like I was supposed to, the managers started Real Steel in our largest theater (XD) for a private show while the rest of the openers had to clean the Lorax theater with all the spilled popcorn and drinks and 3 overflowing garbage cans. I loved the movie, and it may be the most epic theater experience I'll ever have, getting a private showing on such a huge screen. Always show up to work on time, my friends!

Man, Reel Steel is still such a great film after all this time... IMO it has a lot of similarities to the Japanese anime Megalobox, also set in the distant future. Instead of robots, humans box with artificial exoskeletons (called Gears) attached to their limbs. The protagonist, Joe, begins his career fighting in underground rings (just like Rocky) and dreams of having a real fight. At first, he boxes with old Gear (even in an exhibition match that he loses against the current champ, Yuri), but upon entering a tournament (in order to fight Yuri again), he decides to box without Gear, earning him the nickname "Gearless Joe". Although the show is actually an homage to the manga Ashita no Joe ("Tomorrow's Joe"), which was published from the late 60s to the early 70s, I'd like to think it also took inspiration from both Rocky and Real Steel.

The thing about Noisy Boy being such a good bargain. He was a retired champion from an aging generation of robots that was on its way out. In his heyday Noisy was lethal, but that was behind him. This isn't canon, but my guess is that Noisy's part of the G2 bots like Atom. I think G1 bots were built not just to look human, but to mimic more human boxing styles that were driven purely off efficiency in a fight. When the crowd moved on from that, G2 picked it up and added more flash to still very effective technique. This is seen in Noisy Boy's accented design and fancy moveset that's still technically grounded in boxing fundamentals. Then when the audience demanded carnage, G3 went all out and ditched conventional fighting styles for raw power and brutality. That's why in the Underworld you have the no holds barred Midas and the freakish Metro, and the WRB you got the flashy and ferocious Twin Cities and the Ubermensch Zeus. Most of them rely either on their tech being better or the lack of restraint to win. This also explains why Charlie wasn't having much success at the beginning, against thse G3 fighters. He tried emulating their flash when he himself was a high-caliber pro boxer, trained on efficiency over style. It was only when he programmed Atom to fight the way he fights was he able to come back to his fundamentals, exploit the weaknesses of these bigger bots, and finally find success.

One point that I notice a lot in people watching this show is that Charlie was supposed to be a warm up for a fight for the champ, and never realized the fight was supposed to be rigged for him to lose from the start. Charlie gave it his all, only to find out between rounds that he was just there to make the champ look good, yet nearly trashed the champ before he found out he was supposed to lose and he took his prearranged fall after he was told that he was supposed to lose.
