From the director's commentary to the movie: Paul Verhoeven hired real emergency room staff for the scene after Murphy gets shot and at one point asked how realistic it even was for them to try to keep a headshot wound person alive in the first place and they said they did it several times for real. You can lose quite a part of your brain and survive. Sometimes even as yourself and still aware of your surroundings, able to speak and things like that. Other times forever a vegetable. But apparently: As long as you're not dead they try and keep you alive, pretty much.

I had a buddy who was pistol whipped and shot in the back of the head in a burglary, the 3d scan of his skull he kept, i could fit my fist in the hole. He lost the ability to create short term memory which in turn made it difficult to create long term memory, and most of his peripheral vision but other then that he was mostly ok.

Movie is almost 40 years old and it still holds up! Movies aren't supposed to scientifically accurate, they're just supposed to be enjoyed, and believable enough to go with it. One minor correction: It wasn't Murphy's first day on the job when he got shot. He was transferred from another precinct (discussed in the locker room) so he'd been on the job for a while already.

Both 2 and 3 were written by Frank Miller (300, Sin City, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil, etc. [comics]) and based on his experience on both films refused all offers to make Sin City into a film until Robert Rodriguez was able to convince him by shooting the first scene and showing it to Frank. Frank expressed that Robocop 2 wasn't too far away from his script but Robocop 3 had less than 30% of his story make it through to the final film.

Everyone questions the hospital scene. If you listen carefully, one cop says in the changing room “good luck trying to get chopper back up after your in a jam”. But with Murphy they were able to chopper him out and try an keep him partial alive. Bob Morton said “We’ve placed prime candidates in dangerous prime locations”.

Fun note: Movie props departments try to stay in budget by attempting go get free product to use in the movies in exchange for "product placement". A very common practice, especially when it comes to high budget items like cars. They went to GM and asked them for their currently popular Pontiac 6000 since it was at the time pretty "futuristic" looking. GM refused since they didn't think they'd get enough advertisement value from this movie. The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (a 10 year older model) had to be used to stay in budget. That's why the cars you see are 6000 SUX, as an F.U. to GM and even the commercial for it in the movie MADE FUN OF IT...

I agree. In the early days of CGI it was used sparingly as another tool for the filmmaker to utilize. Now, hyper realistic effects are used in place of all the traditional elements which made for a truly enjoyable experience. Practical effects, makeup, prosthetics, lighting, cinematography and even acting are all becoming lost arts. I can't even remember the last film I enjoyed in a theater. 😢

12:09 Dude blew his entire face off with a shotgun. He put it under his chin, slipped forward so the shot went forward instead of up. Took out all of his teeth, his jaw, his nose, and one of his eyes. He was in intensive care for a long time, but he did live. Reconstructive surgery has made him look... Mostly... Normal. There have been soldiers who have been hit by multiple grenades, bullets, taken a lot of damage. I think there was a guy in Iraq who get hit something like 35 times in one engagement, and he lived. One of the BoB guys talks about how many holes they counted in him from grenade shrapnel. The human body is very capable of surviving a lot of punishment. Part of it is the will power of the person, which is why Murphy can survive being Robocop. He's got a strong disposition and character.

Everyone in the playground was acting as Robocop saying all the lines: “dead or alive, you are coming with me”. Good times. Loved the reaction again guys. You would be amazed at what some people can survive. Lets look at Msgt Roy Benavidez. The first time he got wounded a landmine broke his back. He rehabbed himself so well he joined special forces. The second time he got wounded in a 6 hour firefight saving other soldiers. He suffered 34 wounds including being shot, shrapnel, bayoneted and a broken jaw. He was holding in his intestines when he got on the rescue chopper. They were zipping up the body bag he was in when he spit in the Dr's face to let him know he was still alive.

One thing I always wondered: in all the time that's past between the demo with ED 209 til the end of the movie, why is the gun and the case still sitting on a table in the OCP conference room? 2 after action reports I'd have been curious to see what they said: 1) Lewis's incident report- she decides to go after the gang (outnumbered and outgunned) into an unfamiliar area, without backup. She'd probably have to gloss over why she was taken out and was unable to backup Murphy... definitely contributed to the death of her fellow officer. 2) OCP's report on what happened to Kinney. Explaining the use of live ammo in a demo would have been a fun read, but since this is OCP, they likely have the $$$ to buy off any next of kin and keep it out of the press.

19:08, When we dream our brain secrets a chemical that partially paralyzes our voluntary muscles. We can still breath and our hearts keep beating but big muscle movements are suppressed. This chemical keeps us from acting out physical movements from our dreams (e.g. running, reaching for objects etc.). Because Murphy no longer has a human body his robotic body acts out what he is dreaming about. Thats why he is jerking around so much. I thought it was pretty cool this biological quirk was put into the movie.

RoboCop 2 and 3 aren't horrible, they are just not as good and get progressively worse. But even 3 is still worth the watch if you are fully invested into to Old Detroit. There was a TV show, it only lasted 1 season, and there was a cartoon show as well. Plus the toys, video games, etc. This franchise was big in the late 80's early 90's. For a lot of us, this was our gateway into cyberpunk.

Regarding Robocop's weapon. From the Internet Movie Firearm Database: "The main weapon used by RoboCop (Peter Weller) is the "Auto 9". This is a Beretta 93R machine pistol which was heavily modified for the film, featuring a longer barrel with an enormous compensator/flash hider shaped like a casket (which apparently made the trademark gun twirl fairly difficult to perform), plastic grips, and a taller rear sight to match the raised front sight. Typically, RoboCop fires this weapon in 3-round burst mode. The fictional stats of the weapon claim it has an implausibly huge 50-round magazine. Originally it was planned for Robocop to simply carry a Desert Eagle, but Verhoeven felt that the pistol looked too small compared to Robocop's bulky armour, so a special weapon was devised."

The Robocop movie poster is not a photo but a painting. It was painted by Mike Bryan.

I actually like the goofy sequels and the very different remake which plays the entire premise straight with a few tweaks making a very different movie.

excellent, I managed to see it in the cinema, in a less violent cut, when I rented it on VHS... so much gratuitous violence that I missed

I also watched the 2014 in the cinema, but I was so bored, came close to falling asleep three times while watching, only the explosions kept me awake. They made it PG-13 because they thought it would make it more appealing to a broader audience, but they forgot to make a good movie and instead gave us Robukake! Luv the original version, though I do think with the digital effects we have now, they could be used to sort out a few visual issues it has. If you watch the scene where Robocop confronted D.Jones in his office, when he's down on the floor you can see the rubber part of the suit is torn and the black shirt Peter Weller is wearing underneath, digital effects could be used to edit it to cover up the tear... also sort the issue with the colour match of the rear projection during the stop-motion sequences.

His pistol is a Beretta 93R converted to salvo shooting. Probably using sci-fi future ammo somehow drastically increasing the number of rounds it can hold.

In the intro at the start, "Amici Enim Vitae" isn't exactly right. "Enim" when translated into English as "for" is in the sense of "because" like in "For the Lord so loved the world." So, what it says is something like "Friends Because of Life." It's also always postpositive so it should come after Vitae. A better translation would be something like "Amici Per Vitam" which is "Friends Throughout Life" or "Amici Inter Vitam" which is "Friends During Life."

Why do studios remake good movies? They should we make bad movies and make them good, not good movies and make them bad

The biggest problem with the remake is carving it down to a PG rating. Why would you do that to a franchise in which gore and violence are its touchstone?

While not up to the first, ROBO 2 is still pretty good...more stop-motion battles, wife resolved...written by Frank Miller (Dark Knight Returns) so perhaps too politically incorrect for some. And visually, the 4k bluray looks spectacular.
