There's a famous quote about the difference between rugby and football "soccer". Football is 90 minutes of players pretending to be hurt whereas rugby is 80 minutes of players pretending they're not hurt. Sums up rugby really well.

Arguing with the referee is almost unheard of in Rugby, one of the most respected refs in the sport was a 5' 6" gay Welshman, who's word was law, and 6' 6" human gorillas would address as sir. For reference see "10 Minutes of Nigel Owen Being Nigel Owen".

It's not as rough as you might think. There are quite strict rules about how you tackle, and yes, as a physical sport, you do get fights breaking out, but they are rarely serious. I played for 22 years as a Number 8, at 6'5" and 245lbs, that was about average for the position. You do get injuries, but not generally bad ones. It's mostly black eyes, broken nose (mine was broken 4 times), ribs, fingers, etc, a few stitches here and there, but that sort of thing adds character to a face. People do wear scrum-caps, but they are designed to prevent cauliflower-ears rather than provide serious impact protection. I still have all of my own teeth, as I had a very good mouth-guard. But overall, it is a game for gentlemen. You always shake your opponent's hand after the match and buy them a beer regardless of the result of the game. It is also entirely egalitarian. It doesn't matter what you do as a job, how much money you have, what car you drive, or what colour or religion you are, you are a member of that team and will be treated as an equal, both on and off the pitch.

Some of those hits in this video are outlawed in today's game, a player has to at least attempt to wrap his arms around the opponent who has the ball. Head shots, particularly, will often result in the player being sent off (team reduced to 14). It is an incredibly brutal game even within the laws of the game. If you put this into your You Tube search, this match was the biggest so far in the World Cup currently taking part in France, these two are no.1 and 2 in the World right now: HIGHLIGHTS - South Africa v Ireland - 2023 Rugby World Cup. Rugby Union, which is the most common form of Rugby (the other being Rugby League), used to be an amatuer sport until 1995. In the professional era, the power and size of players has greatly increased and hence the impacts from conact have had bigger consequences. There's a big issue with many ex-players suffering brain related injuries from multiple impacts over many years. The rules are constantly being changed to reduce the risks, especially of head injuries. The game used to be a lot more brutal than it is now.

I do recommend watching a couple of those games to see how the game really is played as this video is mostly the extremes. Rugby is in my view one of the best sports around and the one where the players have the most respect towards each other and the officials I have seen. There is also an American league that is growing and has gone on for a couple of seasons. The US will also host the men's world cup in 2031 and the Women's in 2033.

@@didierpetit7566 the same can be said about football; it was for all intents and purposes founded by the Danish many centuries again in a similar fashion (also the pig's bladder was a thing here in Britain long before the modern sports). I say this as a person who has walked by the spot where the creation of the modern sport has been memorialised for the world (and many tourists) on a daily basis for most of my life. Worth noting that the sport was not officially created until after William Webb Ellis had passed away so his idea to pick up the ball and run with it becoming a sport did not occur in his lifetime, and probably was not something he expected to see happen either. But the game he changed was a kicking game - the egg-shaped ball was never intended to be used that way, so I would argue it was not a plagiarism of La Soule, though it was probably an inspiration. It can be said Britain is the place where motorsport, particularly Formula 1, was "invented" - realistically people had been racing in countries all over the world long before, it was just the creation of organised sporting events that gave it wider reach 🙂

Great time to want to watch more Rugby, we are in the middle of the Rugby World Cup. There was an epic match today with Ireland Vs South Africa (world no1 and 2) Once you have gathered the basic rules of rugby, @Squidge Rugby gives the best break-downs of how and why teams make the plays they do.. It's an incredibly tactical game.. Like Chess but IRL and free thinking piecies (but with pre-arranged plays, formations and so on). In soccer, it's 100%(nearly) non-contact. And when sprinting and dribbling a football, it doesn't take much to knock you off balance But I'm 100% with you on the rolling on the floor stuff. Really sucks. You'll also probably love that a referee's word is final, you don't talk back to the ref in Rugby at all. Infact, if your not the captain, you don't talk to him unless he asks you something. You can tackle as hard as you want but there are rules in order to minimize injuries and make sure heads and necks are safe. One thing about many of these hardest hits is that any involving an arm above the shoulders is illegal, anything where they slam the opposite player without "wrapping them" is illegal. any head contact is illegal and immediate yeallow or red card (depending on severity/mitigating actions) anyone tackled while their feet were off the ground is illegal. Up-ending them and slaming them into the ground head first.. is illegal. If you want other sports to check out there are the Gaelic games, Irish football and Hurling(The fastest field game in the world) Aussie rules (a mix of Rugby and Gaelic football) If the TT took your fancy at all,, you should check out some video's on the Irish road racing scene. It's the TT but racing for position rather than a Time Trial. 4 wide at 200MPH is incredible, or flat out on the tightest and bumpies roads you've probably seen. And all for position, elbow to elbow. F1, it's a bit long.. but (name before it was called F1) "Grand Prix: The killer years " is IMO a must watch for anyone interested in where the sport came from (and the main source of it's constant drive for better safety / driver protection)

The headgear is to protect their ears that can get torn during the play. It should be noted they've tightened up on intentional or unintentional hits to the head or neck. So many rugby players got serious concussions and felt the effects long after their playing days finished. BTW there are 2 forms of rugby to confuse you. Rugby union which you watched here that's more popular internationally and rugby league (which is more akin to nfl)

No Protocol, I am very happy to see you check out rugby. But just please, please check out the GOAT of rugby Jonah Lomu. The video you watched is titled "Rugby's Hardest Hits, Biggest Tackles & Crazy Skills". I guarantee you this, if you want to see all these in action then look no further than Jonah Lomu. He played beautiful rugby. He was the complete package. How often do you get a man 196 cm/6'5, 120kg/265 pounds and runs a 100m in 10.8 seconds ? Most olympic sprinters run it in around 10 seconds. So that might give you a picture how unstoppable this guy was. He was rightly nicknamed: "The freight train in ballet shoes". The video you watched this time could actually throw off some faint-hearted people. It is the roughest side of rugby. You should see its fullness. Jonah brought just that, and he wasn't going for the head in his tackles like most players did here. He could hit you anywhere he wanted and go right through you. And Jonah has an inspiring story also. He's one of my role models. There are many great tribute videos to him on youtube, and it is very hard to pick one, so I think it would be the best option if you reacted to all or most of the ones I will request here. I will give them in order from the first to watch to the last to watch. Here they are: 1. Jonah Lomu ULTIMATE TRIBUTE ♛ Lord of the Wings - this one is by Tipene Music 2. Jonah Lomu - The Legend | Tribute - this one is by Kevin Marcaida (UKMSports) 3. Jonah Lomu Tribute | Written In The Stars - this one is by TheRugbyPackHD 4. @@davidlacoste You are very right brother. I am glad you recognize why I am so hyped about Jonah. I am still looking to get noticed by NoProtocol with this request. Many people consider the 1995 match against England to be Jonah's greatest performance. 4 tries in epic fashion. That match is a great pick, but if you want to see a match where he was so dominant, that the opposite team had no answer for him, then I would say it's the Barbarians vs Scotland game in 2001. If he didn't pass the ball to his teammates at the try line, he would have scored 6 tries in that match.

Many years later I was called by my son's school as mid game his ear was torn off, and on field the school medical staff glued it back (it was at the end of the first half) and he was back on the field for the 2nd half.

Yes rugbyplayers wear mouthguards and the headgear you see is called a scrumcap and is mostly worn to protect the ears from forming cauliflower ears, in certain positions the ears can get quite mangled. It offers no real protection against collision damage though and right now it's the players own choice to wear it or not. Like American football rugby is increasingly aware of the effects impacts and concussions have on the brain and looking for ways to protect its players. Most of these are through law changes (rugby has laws not rules) like requiring a player to undergo a Head Injury Assesment after a big hit and giving players that initiate a situation where the opponent gets hit on the head.

Yeah. There are a lot of videos that select on brutality without distinguishing between legal and illegal. All the times a ball carrier was hit above the shoulders or taken while still in the air were very likely yellow or red cards (both get you sent off without replacement, yellow for 10 minutes, red for the rest of the game). One complication to learning is that there are at least 4 different flavors of rugby. Rugby Union, Rugby League, Rugby Nines, and Rugby Sevens that are really different from each other. This was Rugby Union. After this react to one of the "Greatest Tries" videos that focus on the skills and intricate gameplay. I recommend the You Tube channel Couch Rugby for learning, particularly for it's explanation of The Ruck, a topic which confuses everybody.

I would also add that even thought CURRENT Rugby World Cup games aren't available for free on KZbin, matches from previous years are. for someone just wanting to see some Rugby, it doesn't really matter if the match was 4 days ago or 4 years.

Rugby is a physical sport. The protective headwear that a few players use is always made from leather. There are things that the cameras and the officials do not see such as biting, eye gouging, stamping and head butts. There is an amusing case of an amateur player who was a lawyer and used to go into the court room with black eyes and plasters on his face. I once had an accidential clash of heads at speed with an opponent. It was years ago but it seems like only yesterday. However, rugby is a gentleman's game. There are no recriminations for what happens on the pitch. If an opponent lays you out, the Code of Honour is that YOU buy him a drink in the bar after the match.

I really recommend checking out the Six Nations, it happens annually every February and March and involves 6 teams from Europe - Scotland, England, France, Italy, Wales and Ireland. This clip is from the Scotland v England game, one of the most famous rivalries. Rugby is an amazing sport. I absolutely love it. The comradary is great, the atmosphere, speed, strength, stamina is second to none. Rugby players are intensively trained and only use gum shields, no other protective equipment like pads. The helmets are called scrum caps and can be used to help protect against 'cauliflower ear', or often players just wrap tape round their heads lol. Rugby is very serious about head injuries and concussions and theres a big campaign at the moment for it to raise awareness. As many have said check out the World Cup, lots of great matches atm. It has almost reached the quarter final stages so its getting exciting.

Know that many of the tackles you've seen were fauls. A high tackle (where contact is made above the shoulders) especially when it's the shoulder hitting the opposite player is a huge faul. The player making the tackle will get a red card and has to leave the field for the entire match. A yellow card is 10 minutes out to the "sin bin". A couple of rules: The ball needs to be thrown backwards but can be kicked forward, but the player receiving the ball always needs to be behind (or in line with) the player throwing or kicking the ball or else its offside. For a "try"you need to press the ball behind the try line which give 5 points and when a try is made you get a "cenversion" where you can kick the ball between the goal posts over the barr which gives 2 additional points. When you are tackled, your team need to shield of you with the ball, creating a "ruck". The player needs to release the ball after being tackled, the ruck is formed and your team can continue the game. If the ruck is not made quick enough the opposite team can try to grab the ball from the tackled player, but must be on their feet to do so.

Black eyes, bruises, finger splints, cuts/stitches everywhere. If that wasn't bad enough, then you learn they do their own medical care themselves....just stitch each other up on the sidelines and keep playing...no anesthetic, nothing.
