That was a FANTASTIC analysis, excellent job! I love how complicated Shadow Weaver's character becomes in this episode. I think the only thing you didn't cover is that the scene at 7:20 strongly implies that the Horde violently took control over the Black Garnet, and we even see some captive scorpion people, which means that Scorpia's story about how her people joined the Horde willingly is almost certainly a lie/propaganda that the Horde told her. 17:59 I honestly doubt the spell would've worked correctly even if Micah hadn't run away. Shadow Weaver blaming Micah (who was a only young student at the time) for screwing up a Dark Magic spell (that she manipulated him into casting), is just her doing what she always does when something goes wrong. Shadow Weaver never takes responsibility for her own actions, its always someone else's fault. She's a classic narcissist. 31:30 Oh you're right about Scorpia, she is constantly crossing Catra's boundaries, its painful to watch, especially considering Catra is very sensitive about such stuff. 44:26 Yeah this hurts :( its clear that Shadow Weaver deprived Catra (and Adora) of touch, so that she could use it to manipulate them easier. People who are deprived of touch in their childhood develop a tendency to self-hug, which we see Catra do in this episode, and Adora also does it a few times back in season 1.

This is such an amazing and heartbreaking episode. You covered the way it handled the complicated relationship between an abused child and their parental figure really well already, but I want to hone in on that one line from Shadow Weaver, when she says Catra reminds her of herself, and that nothing was ever easy for them. I guess we don't know if Shadow Weaver truly believes this, but it shows her incredibly delusional thinking: Their circumstances are nothing alike, Shadow Weaver was a respected magic teacher in a heavenly paradise, and Catra was a nameless orphan forcibly conscripted into a ruthless army-state, under which she was constantly abused in various ways from a young age. That she would equate their situations is pretty descriptive of how abusers think. I also think it's worth mentioning how well this works as a flashback/backstory episode. Those are not necessarily easy to pull off, but they integrate the past plot seamlessly into the events of the present. The whole thing just works really, really well.

I never thought of it that way. 🤔 I suppose when I heard Shadow Weaver say that, I thought more about her childhood than who she was as Light Spinner--a respected teacher. Now, I don't know what her childhood is like, so I take her words with a grain of salt. Then I think about her attitude towards Micah's natural talent and how upset she was. Maybe that stems from the fact that she had to work hard to get to where she is, while kids like Micah can catch up with ease. The way she realizes that Adora has a high aptitude/talent and that's why she took her in as her new Micah essentially. While she saw Catra as... well... not to Adora or Micah's level. I agree with the seamless backstory. It shows us her character in the past + moves the plot along. So good haha

I appreciate the small moments showing Shadow Weaver has abusive tendencies even as Light Spinner, like how she can be unnecessarily physically rough with him. She just got worse with Catra and Adora. The show doesn't really show it, probably because of the rating, but there is definitely the implication she didn't just harm Catra emotionally over the years.

Honestly, Shadow Weaver is my second favorite character. I love hiw, despite being a terrible person, she does have depth to her, and even some slight moments of genuine care.

Man, this episode hurts every time I see it. The delivery and writing of "What could I possibly have done to deserve the way you treated me?" is just so heartbreaking and yet it resonated so much with me that I knew exactly how she felt. The animation is so impactful in showing how vulnerable she is too. Your analysis in this episode is on point. I'm glad you called out Shadow Weaver's BS excuse for abusing Catra and how some people use similar BS reasonings to uphold oppressive or unhealthy systems. I can't wait to see the rest of your reactions, especially to Catra's storyline!

@@IkesAlternative I really like this episode of she-ra and your reaction to it. It expands on Catra's relations with Shadow Weaver, and how effective SW's manipulation and abuse really is. Catra is so desperate for validation and love from SW, and it's just really sad because Catra has turned out just how SW wanted.
