i like the subtly of john doe having to yell to get the cops attention despite being covered in blood and walking into a station to confess...they are so wrapped up in their own world they don't notice him in front of them..no one expected him to turn himself in when this came out and they probably never find him unless he does so its a shocking scene when he admits to it...especially knowing the ending the blood thats on him is well you know and how much that means on rewatch..and after the fact....priceless.....its so iconic to me...

20:02 "They're supposed to be in New York..." This movie was filmed completely in Los Angeles. According to Fincher, he tried to make the actual location ambiguous because he wanted it to represent any scary big city full of crime. So it's kind of a fictional, film noir LA.

I hated that she figured it out so quickly. I was like 15 or 16 when I saw this movie and the car ride with John Doe was so frightening to me because he had the upper hand the entire time and Brad Pitt's character couldn't get that through his damn thick head for some reason. Morgan Freeman knew something was up. I knew too.... But I didn't think it was that. I remember my Mom thinking the dogs' heads were in the box. Yikes.

a lot of these movies with twist endings were new for their time - especially after the 80's when everything was spoon-fed to the audience. since the mid-nineties a lot of films (and TV) have twist endings now and there have been so many spoofs and homages and memes (what's in the box???) so if you see them for the first time now they are more predictable than they were back when they came out - she even knew it was a head in the box before she even knew it was a box LOL

Or she's just versed in mystery crime thrillers, knows it has a twist ending, and is more perceptive than the average viewer. Watching her focus in on the wife and how she will come into it seems honestly quite genuine. When I was 15 I wouldn't think about it but now I'd probably know her character is in the script for more than just moral support. It's not a stretch to work out the serial killer is going to target the main characters family. It's actually a pretty common trope. Then add in the fact she was googling the seven deadly sins and working out what was left and theorizing what could happen. Serial killer covered in mystery blood? A grand total of ONE other supporting character in the story? In hindsight it IS signposted. Most people miss it but I'm not at all surprised some people figure it out. That's what makes a good twist. The fact the signs were there. It didn't come out of left field. It just feels that way because the movie directed you just as planned.

I don't think I've ever seen someone guess the attack coming for Mil's wife! Great hypothesising. I saw this pretty young, and not only did I not guess that Mil's wife would be killed when the movie finished I was asking my brother what was in the box, I had no idea! Se7en is one of my favourite movies of all time, though I rarely watch it. So well shot, acted and written. It oozes broody, dark ambience and character. Your comment regarding the city is spot on, and someone else described it as another character in the movie - so comparing it to Gotham is super accurate Small bit of trivia, Brad Pitt seriously injured himself in the rain chase scene - his arm went through a windscreen, and I think a tendon was severed. The cast he wears was not in the script, but a result of the injury EDIT: Definitely check out Usual Suspects, it is another great movie. Alien 3, its worth checking out, though it can spoil Alien/Aliens. I'd check out the Assembly cut which is in my opinion better than the theatrical - its also worth looking into all the drama that stemmed from the script writing to the directing, and how Fincher was screwed over being brought on because he was inexperienced and controllable

Kevin Spacey performance in this is some of the best acting shit i have ever seen. He says like 50 words in this movie and his actual time on screen is like 2 minutes and yet i loved every second of that. Just absolutely briliant. Also love the fact his name was not present in the opening or anywhere before the movie premiere. You would not hide such a huge thing these days. I will also never get "LUST" out of my head. It's making me both both mentally and physically uncomfortable maybe more than anything. Turning something so pleasant and beautiful into such a nightmare. I can't even imagine the pain that woman had to go through. It makes seriously sick. And i'm fuckin Guy🤣 Imagine if i was a woman. Also i too figured out it's Gwyneth's head in the box and i kinda loved Gwyneth so i felt Pitt's pain. Plus can you imagine finding out she was pregnant in "this" situation. God i would revive Mengele to do experiments on Spacey. Bullet to the head was too easy way out. And the fact that in this movie the bad guy actually wins is so fresh. I wish i saw this like a decade or two ago. It's still amazing but nothing is timeless. I love things like this. Slow paced pitch dark dramas. Love Fincher's style. You gotta try "Mindhunter". It's a Netflix series. And it's absolutely breathtaking. It's crime drama about psychological study of serial killers. It's dark, it's slow, it has uncomfortable atmoshpere, brilliant script and dialogs. AND insanely good casting of the murderers.

Occam's Razor - the simplest solution is the best, the simplest explanation is the most probably correct. Checkov's gun - if there is a gun on the scene in the first part of the play, somebody must fire it by the end of the play.

Most people think of sloth as lazy but in reality it is more doing something you prefer over something you are supposed to. When the list was first written and they discussed sloth they were talking about the feeling of boredom and wanting to do something else when they were doing their noon day prayers.

hell, just put every Fincher film ever on the List lol. loooove me some David Fincher. started with Nine Inch Nails music videos and Alien 3 (which technically doesn't count lol) and just kept banging out masterpiece after masterpiece. I even like his version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Panic Room is an underrated gem imo too

Fincher is great - but what I've learned this year from going down the Taylor Sheridan rabbit hole... it's not always the director in whether a movie is great or not - they're just the ones that get all the credit and awards or take all the blame, it all begins with the writer.

That theory about Spacey's character being in both this and Usual Suspects... No way, I don't see it. They are two totally different characters. Something must have went really, catastrophically wrong in Verbal's life to bring him to the place he is in in Seven. The only way I can see it happening is if he underwent the reprograming treatment that Alex went through in A Clockwork Orange, and it went REALLY bad.

This movie is in my top ten greatest movies of all time. Whenever I see the ending I remember the movie commentary. Fincher and Pitt were doing the commentary. In that last scene where Brad pushes the gun against Spacey's head, he gives a quick glance off-camera. Brad said Spacey was pissed he shoved the gun against his head so hard so he gave Fincher a look. Knowing what we know about Spacey now, good going Brad.

A friend of mine had a watch party for the Oscars, late nineties, and she invited me over. I hadn't been to a watch party since 1969. I was intrigued and I mounted my bicycle and got to the party, already in session. Kevin Spacey was onscreen and was hosting? 2 minutes of Kevin and I was out, I left the party. Why did you leave? asked my friend. Kevin creeps me out, I told her.

Occam's Razor is the easiest explanation is usually the correct one. It's used & found in both scientific areas and philosophical areas of study. I learned more about basic physics, mathematics, and those areas when I took Ancient to modern Philosophy in college courses. They had an understanding of our world in ancient philosophy that is used today.

David Fincher started to direct Alien 3. The crew and cast had to finish it up by themselves ...with my help, I might add. A lot of the vibe of usual suspects was still with the crew as we started "7" tho... emotionally draining for all of us. I preferred "Brother, Where art thou?" A much happier experience for all concerned.
