Yes, I was surprised by Verbal being Keyser Soze along with the rest of the audience in the theater back in '95. One thing to remember is back then Spacey wasn't as well known, hadn't played a bad guy, this hadn't become apart of popular culture yet, and he didn't have the heaps of negative baggage that's now associated him. As for Verbal losing his cool when Soze is mentioned most of us took as he's about to walk and now he and the rest of the crew are tied to the Boogey Man, which could make his life difficult and Soze might come after him. Remember, back in '95 we weren't looking for a twist within a twist in the movie, to have a narrator that is completely unreliable wasn't unknown back in '95, but it isn't the trope that it has become in the last quarter century. In some ways The Usual Suspects ushered it in.

Funny side story: The director wanted to get the best performance out of the five actors. So he told each one that he would in fact have to play the real Keyser Söze. Every one of them got a different script, with an alternative ending. So each of the actors played their role as the one with the secret identity. Because everyone was convinced that he would have the main role in the movie.

When Kujan says that Keaton was "behind that whole circus at the harbor," you can see a small smile cross Verbals' face; right then, he knew how to play the guy based on his preconceptions. He aggressively defends Keaton for most of the interview before tearfully "admitting" Keaton was the ringleader.

Great point! If you see spacey in a movie now you would be more suspicious than in 96. He was kind of a nobody. There's also been 25 years where even if you never saw the movie you've heard usual suspects has a big twist. Just about every reactor starts trying to guess who Söze is where as in 96 it wouldn't occur to you that sizes identity was going to be crucial when you start watching the movie

Exactly...and her guessing its Kevin Spacey as Verbal Kint just based on his reaction to that name is stupid. After the backstory of Kaiser Soze is given, the audience is given to understand that he's the devil himself and even a cold psychopath such as verbal kint should be afraid of him. That's why spacey reacts so dramatically.

Spacey plays a fairly normal person in a top shelf crime drama mystery flick called Glen Garry Glen Ross. It's surprising how few people have seen that flick since it also stars Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Jonathan Pryce. It's not a murder mystery but it's still great acting all around and a kinda twisty ending. Highly recommended.

ANSWERS: - Benicio Del Toro smokes. Like, a llllllllllllllllooooooooooooot. That's why he ages poorly. - Gabriel Byrne is Irish. He took this job at the last minute with no plan to get hired so he had no prep time for an American accent. - Kevin Spacey plays a normal guy in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. He also does in THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE but that movie sucks. - I didn't solve the mystery until the end when I first watched this because I'd heard that it was a mindfuck mystery so I overthought everything. I was paying attention to details I didn't have to and kept psyching myself out. If I hadn't known that going in, I might've been able to figure it out.

Cool, I love movie reactions! Let's goooo! I'll list my thoughts as we go! 1. It's interesting that you think Gabriel Byrne, born and raised in Dublin, has a variable Irish accent. 2. When I see Dan Hedaya I think "Cheers". 3. Kevin Spacey plays "creepy" characters because he chose interesting characters; I don't think that applying post hoc knowledge means anything. 4. Just noticed your sick AF Transformers shirt. 5. $3.3 million is now the equivalent of nearly $6 million. 6. I don't blame you for not knowing what was going on, but I think the setup and characters are interesting enough to keep me saying "Wow, I can't wait to see what's going on here!" instead of "Ugh, what is even happening?!" 7. Love that you noticed how people held their guns! 8. Pete Postelthwaite is a legend, not just the guy from Alien 3! :p 9. "He's Kaiser Soze" WOW! His "aww fuck!" was meant to show that he had knowledge he was withholding, not that it was him. I'll be honest I don't think I could have interpreted it the way you did!

I was too much envolved in rooting for Keating throughout the movie, so the little details that point to Spacey went over my head till the end. :P I would watch LA Confidential, for a straightforward "who dunnit", which does homage to the "Noir" detective stories of the 1940s, or "The prestige" for a mistery with more existencial meaning (last one masterfully directed by Ch. Nolan).

I never watched this movie until recently because I saw the first Scary Movie when I was a kid and they spoof the ending, so I always knew who Keyser Soze was, but it's still a great film that still holds up. At first I thought it was a kinda cheating the way they cut to Spacey on the dock after Soze kills various people, and how he fakes being crippled even when no one is around, but considering it's his retelling of events to the police I guess it makes sense, he's an unreliable narrator.

When I first say this, it wasn't until Spacy shifts from the lame leg walk to the normal walk. And it was one of the most satisfying twists. One of my favorite suspense is "Rear Window". And not just because it was when I developed a Hugh crush on Grace Kelly. But that one isn't such a hard mystery.

The Mrs. was sharp on this one! Back when Spacey was still an unknown, it was a pretty cool surprise for most of us. Spacey also played smug jerkfaces to no one's surprise. He played one in an early role in Glengarry Glen Ross (highly recommended watch if you haven't already). Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, & Jack Lemmon co-star and they are all amazing in it. That's my lead for you. Lots of cussing though!

Flip the detective thing and watch Knives Out. See if you can solve the mystery when they show you who did it at the beginning.

The reason for Benicio Del Toro mumbling in this movie. He was trying to impersonate Dustin Hoffman's performance in Dick Tracy (1990). Also the woman who plays the sketch artist Michelle Clunie and the director Bryan Singer have a son together.

A true modern Classic of Noir cinema!! I remember the first trailer for this and watching this crime drama but with a supernatural element in the shadow that is called Keyser Soze. The acting was superb and Kevin Spacey hands down deserved his Best Supporting Actor Oscar!! Great to see both of your first time reactions. The Mrs is definitely good at detecting out the whodunit. I would also recommend another classic Clue and a great recent one, Knives Out! 👍👍😊

You have to watch LA Confidential. Another cop thriller with Kevin Spacey and an ensemble of famous actors. It also has a twist and great storytelling.

People forget that when this first came out, the twist was a HUGE surprise, as Kevin Spacey was a nobody and the film was flying under the radar.....so the twist was amazing for those who first saw it (like me) in the theaters before there was any hype. Now that the word is out that there's a huge twist, and that Kevin Spacey is an amazing actor (despite his personal life issues), the whole twist thing is now expected & predicted by everyone, which blows the whole fun of watching this in the first place.

Two movies I'd like to see you watch back-to-back are "Murder by Decree" with Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Holmes and Watson, and "From Hell" with Johnny Depp. Both take the same stance on the Ripper murders, and tell essentially the same story.

She should watch Shutter Island then. Not sure why, but I wonder if the cowboy here would resist doing a little head beat nod whilst a video about Licorice Whip done by Mr. Smithers from The Simpsons is playing. These are questions that I ponder at night.

When I was in college way back in the late 90s, I watched this several times at various friends houses and my gf at the time fell asleep within 30-40 min of the end every time, so she never saw the coolest part. I still talk to her now and then, I’ll have to ask her some day if she ever did see it all the way through.

There's some weird Mandela Effect shit happening with this movie. I'm 100% certain it was a Steven Soderbergh film. I wrote a paper on it in college. But no record agrees with me now, except the paper.
