You're right. As fun and comedic as this episode was, It DOESN'T break away from Star Trek. Missions can be fun, serious, or life and death serious. They can be in any situation anywhere, anytime.

Spock's comment to McCoy involving "beads and rattles" is essentially Spock calling him nothing more than a witch doctor. The first draft of the script devoted more attention to Norman's act of diverting the Enterprise to Mudd, with the crew only arriving at the end of the second act. After an examination revealed Norman as an android, Scotty expressed an urge to take Norman apart - quickly adding that it was "nothing personal." Norman understood.

It is one of the fun Star Trek episodes. It's another episode where Kirk outsmarts computers.

I LOVE this episode because of the comedic under tones and the return of Harry Mudd. The music is different in the episode TOO.I also like the landing party assembled:Scotty,McCoy,Uhuru and Chekov,you rarely saw this group together.Well,maybe a few episodes.It was also good to see them on an another set,besides the bridge.

It just dawned on me where the title possibly came from. There was a series called I, Claudius. I had thought it was made up to say Mudd is bragging that he’s ruler of the planet.

The series didn't come out until 1977. The book, though, came out in 1937. It might be based on that, I suppose.

9:35 mudd wouldn’t need to know how to hack the ship, Norman and the others observed mudd enough to be able to pass off as humans whilst Norman was “undercover”, and with the speed at which artificial life forms can absorb information, all that they’d need to do is open a basic library computer, and their own AI would circumvent any security firewalls thus allowing 5em access to complete technical schematics and manuals about the constitution class vessels…

Definitely in my top 5 of Season 2, which is my favourite season of TOS, though Mirror Mirror and The Trouble With Tribbles are my favourite 2 of that series (and first and third respectively in TOS, my second favourite TOS is The Naked Time).

There is a Star Trek novel titled Mudd in Your Eye. In it Harry Mudd has claimed he has reformed, but Kirk doesn't believe him. The real Stella Mudd appears in the novel.

9:02 if mudds ship was damaged so that he couldn’t leave…how did Norman leave the planet to get aboard the enterprise? Obvious answer, they built their own ship for Norman to leave…so why wouldn’t mudd insist they make him one Of course as the episode plays out we get somewhat of an answer…

Please consider reacting to The Expanse. Or at least include it in a poll. I've been a Trekie all my life. I was 6yo when it premiered and was instantly hooked. Back in 2002 Firefly premiered and I was instantly a Browncoat. Then I discovered The Expanse, and it became my absolute favorite Sci-fi series, and I am proud to be a Screaming Firehawk. Being a sci-fi fan, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It is, imho, the *BEST* sci-fi series made to date. Many have referred to The Expanse as "Game of Thrones in space," which I understand, but I would describe it more like, if Battlestar Galactica and Alien had a secret love child, it would be The Expanse. It is a space opera, a political drama, a detective noir, and much more all rolled into a story essentially about family. It has some of the best writing, story development , and character development of any sci-fi story, or any story, I've ever seen. The head writers, also being co-authors of the book series, succeed brilliantly at the one thing most writers, like D&D of Game of Thrones, fail at, consistency. Consistency in the adaptation from page to screen, but also consistency of script quality, pacing, character development, etc. It is brilliantly written and executed. The show started on SciFi Network but was canceled due to distribution issues because of streaming taking over. The fans launched a successful campaign to save the show, and thanks to people like George R.R. Martin and the fans Amazon picked it up. I promise, any sci-fi fan will thank themselves later for watching this show. Just poll it. Please. 🙏Gratitude P.S. Yes, I'm playing off your name by calling myself the Sci-Fu Vat Guy. 😉✌️

Things are definitely looking bad for our lovable rouge Mudd at the end of this one. Rest assured, he puts that con artist's mind of his to good use and manages to find a way to escape the androids to trouble the crew again in "Mudd's Passion," an episode of the animated series. Unfortunately, he doesn't get any time to go into any specifics, as those episodes are only 22 minutes long. However, those details are revealed in the novelization by Alan Dean Foster (Star Trek Logs #3).😁

@Tamara, sorry nobody told you in advance this episode was intended as a comedy. So are 'Trouble with Tribbles' and 'A Piece of the Action' and maybe 'Elaan of Troyius' as well. Your next episode Metamorphosis is a beautiful love story with a beautiful musical score composed just for it and a twist ending.

Ahh Mudd the First ruler of an entire sovereign planet. And unprincipled con man. Such a wonderful character to play around with. In Star Trek The Next Generation there is a similar episode called Devil's Due. It's not nearly as fun.
