And if you remember, there was no immediate announcement that there would (or should be) another movie. Like Natascha said, it kind of felt like this story had been told- what else was there? We didn't know about Lucas's larger vision. Sequels were not an automatic thing back then. I can only think of the Planet of the Apes series, the 2 Godfather movies, and I guess you can include the James Bond movies as having "follow ups".

In 1983 I was married and had 2 children. One was 4 and I sewed him a Luke Skywalker outfit. I made myself Princess Leia, and because he had a beard I had my husband as Obi-One. There were no patterns for it so I took similar ones and did it that way. For the cloak of OBI I took an army blanket which was gruff enough looking to be a material the could be used tor that. I got a dress pattern with open sleeves like an angel design and put cuffs around the wrist. We went to what was called a Sci-Fi convention. That was before the Comic Books took it over. I went to those back in the 70's before Star Wars had even come out. We stood in line at the Graumans Chinese Theater opening day. May 25th 1977. We were in line for about 4 hours and it was so worth it. See the special effects that were in the first film had never been seen before because Lucas did all his own out of his creative mind. What you said looked cheesy had never been accomplished. A good portion of the creatures were CGI in 1990 when it was redone by him.

That isn't a model car with a doll, "Landspeeders first appear in Star Wars. Two of them-Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) X-34 and a V-35-were designed by noted special effects artist John Stears and were fitted around cars. Skywalker's landspeeder was designed and built by Ogle Design around the chassis of a Bond Bug three-wheeler car.[1][2][3] One of the major challenges the production crew faced was disguising the wheels to create the illusion that the craft was hovering.[4][5] For certain shots, they shot from camera angles that masked the wheels; for long-distance shots, they used reflective material, gelatin on the camera lens, and shadow effects. A small blur could be seen under the speeder, which George Lucas called "The Force Spot" (stated in Special Edition Tape).[4] Production designer Roger Christian used an angled mirror and a broom attached to the vehicle's underside to create, at certain angles, the illusion that the craft was hovering and kicking up dust.[3] Star Wars creator George Lucas used digital technology to enhance the landspeeder effects in the Special Edition of A New Hope.[

For some medium close-up shots they mounted a full-size mockup of the landspeeder on a rotating arm so it could go 'round and 'round like a merry-go-round while being held up off the ground. This allowed it to rotate into frame, seemingly floating in midair, with the actors sitting in the seats, and with the supporting arm hidden behind the vehicle.
@Lethgar_Smith8 ай бұрын
The shot she reacted to looked fake to her, I think, because it was shot from a long distance with a telephoto lens and that makes the image very grainy and there is a slight heat mirage in the lower portion of the frame. This shot was not cleaned up or enhanced in anyway and, in comparison to the footage that comes before and after, it looks out of place.

Fun fact: Peter Cushing, who played Tarkin, had very large feet and unfortunately the costume department got him boots that were too small! So, after shooting a couple scenes with agonizing feet, he went to George Lucas and explained the problem and George agreed that all the rest of his scenes would be shot from the waist up. Thus, Peter Cushing, Grand Moff Tarkin, commanded the Death Star wearing carpet slippers! 😂😂😂

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (pop. 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ until the film left theaters I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular experimental widescreen format of the era. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

re: Star Trek, I used to think that as well, but actually, they were already planning to make a Star Trek movie long before Star Wars came out. There is a tv talk show episode from Feb 1976 with a couple of the ST cast and Jimmy Doohan mentions that they're going to be doing a movie, and that he expected that there was going to be a series of them. So, Star Wars' impact only related to the direction they went with the movie, its budget, things like that.

At around 18:28 you say "that is giving me a little toy on fishing line vibe". I nearly fell off my seat laughing. When I was in 6th grade in the 70s, my 6th grades religious study class decided to do a more god-driven version of Star Wars movie as our final project. We filmed it on Super8 film, which meant we only had one take for each scene and had to film sequentially. I, an amateur model maker, built a very nice replica of Luke's Landspeeder. It was decided to use it as our main spacecraft. It had fishing line attached to the front (still connected to a fishing pole) and two fishing lines attached to the back to stabilize. The front fishing line was run thru the pull on a kitchen cabinet for angle. As we filmed the scene, and the narration said the spaceship was being pulled gently toward the Death Star (again made by me, but this time a paper mache balloon painted Grey with Sharpie designs drawn on it), the cabinet drawer was pulled open and spaceship dropped out of frame. Someone offscreen panicked and slammed the door shut. The ship then flew up and out of the scene and then bounced up and down on the rest of the way to the Death Star. When we showed this to our church, this scene got uproarious laughter and my uncle fell off his chair in the choir. It was not what we were shooting for, but I remain proud of it to this day.

This Princess Leia cosplay made me think about what the creator of this franchise said to the actress who played Leia. "Don't wear a bra, because there are no bras in space." And we had Return of the Jedi and what he said made even less sense.

But they weren’t in space, they were in atmosphere. Leia is not on a planetary surface until the final 20 minutes of the first movie.

Humans and other alien races colonized Tatooine and have gradually taken more land that originally belonged to the Tusken. Basically like the settlers taking indigenous peoples land. Some tribes of Tusken have now become raiders attacking settlements and travelers.

45:55 Back in 1977 I was at band practice, my younger sisters, mum and dad were at the drive ins watching this movie. My dad, not much of a sci-fi guy loved this scene and the fact that the Empire had a kind of WWII axis power vibe. This scene reminded him of several WWII B-17 bomber belly, and top turret fighting movies that he had watched during his young child and teenhood.

What a fun reaction! Rogue One, the movie you were thinking of with Jyn Erso, ends right before this one picks up in the Star Wars timeline. Keep in mind that the Empire still exists even though Luke destroyed the Death Star. The reason this movie ended like this is because George Lucas didn’t know if it would be successful enough to create sequels. So he made this one so that it could stand alone. Cheers!

10:30 -- RE: So 3PO can understand the Beep Boop Beeps?! Can anyone else...?; A: Short answer, Yes, there is a small minority of people who can understand the language R2 is using, sometimes because they have him plugged into a screen of some kind but not always. The tones and more importantly the inflections act in exactly the same manner as body language. Again, "3 Villains of the Hidden Fortress" is surprisingly the best reference for R2's "voice" inflections. When it sounds like a scream or an excited yell, it's because Lucas is using the performance of a Japanese actor as the template for how it should sound and make the people around R2 feel.

I just want to thank you for the reaction. It doesn't matter what movies you watched first, all that matters is you are watching the original trilogy now and you are clearly very excited. I apologize on behalf of any rude "fans", I put quotes because true fans are just happy to see someone join this universe and enjoy it. Most of us are passionate and welcoming, a minority of fans are very vocal and sometimes toxic

As a child of the late 80s, all the lads wanted to grow up as jedi. But it was always a male dominated subject. It was rare to get a lass who appreciated the franchise, let alone a pretty one. So on behalf of my generation, thank you for bringing us this, it means a lot. Ps- i was also a greyhound body type. My nana had a saying, you can't fatten a thoroughbred. It does wear off in time, but you still look amazing, Carrie would be proud. ❤❤❤

With the land speeder, it was actually a car with the speeder shell. Amd to get the floating effect, the first tried a mirror, but the they smudged vaseline to the camera, which works, but left a little blur under the car which they ended up fixing in the trilogy boxset

Crazy thing about the landspeeder shots you thought used strings and puppets - those were "real." The speeder was built on a car with mirrors over the bottom to make it look like it was floating. So the floating off the ground (the thing you accepted) was simple in-camera illusion, and the rest was actually real! This movie pushed special effects forward immeasurably, and one of the things they learned over time was that being real and "looking realistic" are oddly different things.
