Luke wasn't bleeding when he lost his hand because the lightsaber leaves a wound that's basically a burn. The wound is cauterized and doesn't bleed. I think this makes sense, although it's a change from what you saw in A New Hope, where Obi-Wan cuts off an arm in the cantina and we do see blood. Basically I think we can assume they were still figuring out how lightsabers should work when making the first movie.

"Is it that easy to fall to the dark side?" It can be, depending on the Jedi and the circumstances. The dark side is kind of a nebulous thing, but it's sort of like giving into the temptation to use your powers selfishly or wrongly. The potential to fall is in every Jedi (but so is the potential to overcome). The more powerful the Jedi, the more they can do with the Force, and therefore the shinier the lure of the dark side. The circumstances that cause a Jedi to fall varies, and a fall can either be sudden or gradual.

Hey, Sofie! This is most people's favorite installment and widely considered to be the best Star Wars film. It certainly is mine. Young people who came of age with the Prequel trilogy often cite Episode III as their favorite. "Empire" has four strikingly distinct environments, an amazing opening battle, the Yoda reveal, the romantic sparring, a deeper explanation of the Force, Lando's treachery and redemption, the presence of fan favorite Boba Fett, the loss of Han, the Vader revelation and the cliffhanger ending. It is a wild escapist ride that packs an emotional wallop! Mark Hamill had a terrible car accident prior to filming and underwent facial reconstructive surgery. Already a part of the screenplay, the WAMPA attack on Hoth became an in-story way to explain his new look and the make-up department enhanced his barely-visible scars. Han eviscerating the TAUN TAUN is an authentic form of arctic and/or cold weather survival. He stuffed Luke's hypothermic body in the still-warm carcass of the animal wrapping him in its innards in order to keep him from freezing to death. People have done this to survive. I love it when people freak out watching that scene! BACTA is the liquid in the healing cylinder. It is a bacterial compound with regenerative properties that is the standard medical treatment for all injuries in the Star Wars galaxy. Yoda's odd little voice is provided by his puppeteer Frank Oz who voices many Jim Henson Muppets like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal as well as Sesame Street characters like Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover! Yoda pretended to be a grubby, eccentric hermit simply to get an honest reaction out of Luke that would reveal his character. It's a test like those of the gods in Greek mythology who appear as deformed peasants to see how the hero will behave toward the lowliest person. The new player Vader was kneeling before is the Emperor! The same actor plays him in all his appearances across the saga. The MYNOCKS are bat-sized creatures that feed off electrical energy and are starship pests. Sometimes they live symbiotically in the gullets of space leviathans like the EXOGORTH that swallowed the 'Falcon'! I find it amusing how social norms have changed. I've watched a number of millennials view Star Wars for the first time now on KZbin and quite a few young women are APPALLED by Han Solo's behavior! When these movies came out, Harrison Ford became an instant mega-star and sex symbol because of his devil-may-care swagger and brash forwardness. He subscribed to the "treat a Queen like a whore and a whore like a Queen" school of seduction and WOMEN LOVED HIM FOR IT!!! You can tell he's a softie underneath which is what makes him endearing but it seems young women today in the era of woke find him INSUFFERABLE!!! All boys thought he was the coolest guy ever. It's funny how times change. I'm relieved his charms weren't lost on you, Sofie! Lol. Leia was a feminist icon back in the day! An independent woman of means comfortable wielding power, unafraid to get her hands dirty and dedicated to a serious cause! A whole generation of young boys and girls grew up with her as a role model. Talented screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was responsible for all the fun romantic banter in this film. As Leia is Alderaanian royalty and Han Solo is a Corellian street kid, it's basically a CLASS ISSUE preventing her from accepting her feelings for Solo. The constant arguing is their foreplay as he wears her down with his roguish charm. Lol. Harrison Ford's famous "I know." reply to Leia's declaration of love was ad-libbed by Ford who wasn't feeling the more generic "I love you, too." line from the script. Director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas kept it in the movie. It's perfect for the character. I've seen some young female reactors take DEEP OFFENSE! Keep in mind that Solo has been upfront with Leia about his feelings for her for THREE YEARS at this point! She's the one who has been coy with him despite her obvious attraction. Her admission is what HE'S been patiently waiting for and he matter-of-factly tells her he's fully aware of how she feels. It's the answer SHE DESERVES! Lol. The movies were remastered in the late '90s to promote the upcoming Prequel trilogy with some CGI overlays of the original practical effects but this installment has the fewest egregious changes and looks much like it did in 1980. The Wampa feeding, some aerial shots of Cloud City, a clearer view of the Emperor and some windows cut into corridors Leia, Lando and Chewie are running through at the end which look out onto the Bespin cityscape are the only updates I can think of. People were SO INVESTED in this franchise back in 1980 that scrutiny during production was INTENSE!! They had the actor in the Vader suit, David Prowse, speak different lines to Luke to conceal the reveal even though Hamill was told what to react to. Dummy scripts were used on set to throw off snoops and spies. James Earl Jones was told the truth just prior to recording the scene. When Jones uttered those immortal words on screen, "No, I am your father.", audiences collectively GASPED, SCREAMED, CRIED, FAINTED and SHOUTED their dismay! It remains one of cinema's MOST ICONIC MOMENTS.
@gregorm935 ай бұрын
totally agree. Empire has always been my favourite. There's very few movies out there that let the bad guys win, but this one certainly does. And it doesn't leave you lingering, there are no lulls, whereas ANH had some real lulls such as the trip to Alderaan and the calm at the rebel base before the storm that is the Battle Of Yavin. RotJ arguably has lulls too, incl the heartwarming scenes up in the Ewok village. Empire doesn't really have any of that

Star Wars 1977 (AKA "Episode IV: A New Hope") really just introduces the characters, relationships, and situations. It is merely the first act of a larger story. Notice that the hero gets an incredibly cool weapon... and then never gets to actually USE the weapon. Notice that an incredible villain is introduced... and the hero is never even in the same room as the villain. A New Hope is clearly a first act. The Story takes off in Empire Strikes Back, which is Act 2, of a 3 act story. This movie is the part of the story that gets the characters into big trouble. Great reaction :) It was fun to watch! Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things: 1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader) 2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side 3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader. Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw. Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them. Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer." Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs. This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda told him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.

Darth Vader rolls up, puts a gun to everyone’s head, and says “Hand over your old drug-smuggling gambling buddy who’s gonna show up in five minutes, or I start pulling triggers.” There was no choice; there were kids in that city.

Lando gets the short end of the stick several times during the films. Yeah, he could have told Vader no, but that would have been a blood bath and then the next guy in charge would have said yes.

The reason Luke looks a bit different is because the actor, Mark Hamill, was in a car accident between the first and second movie. He has said that the injuries he sustained weren't too severe or life-threatening, but he did suffer facial fractures and had to undergo some cosmetic surgery.

@jspettifer when I saw A New Hope in 1977, I was 12, only 5 years older than your son. What I said was from people who were younger, the same age, a little older, or much older than me. I really didn't come up with anything. I've stuck with this for 47 years; your son's theory is part of the fun that is Star Wars and I'm glad he's watching it; it was a big part of my childhood. Although episodes 1-3 are necessary in telling the backstories of vital character's and I liked them, I'm not a fan of the overuse of CGI! Episodes 1-3 were certainly more polished and shiny, time saving, but I'll take the older way of doing things most of the time. Model making is fascinating to me; as a child I built models all the time(certainly not near the scale of what they did in 1977), but I had a lot of fun putting them together, the painting, decals, all of of it. I'm not sure if you've watched any of the documentaries of the making of Star Wars 1977-1983, but it would be an interesting and fun thing to do with your child? I'm not sure if you or your child have read the Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, seen the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings trilogies in theater's but those are great experiences, too? There are also the Appendices with the dvd's and blu rays that show the process and huge undertaking it is to adapt movies from a classic like The Hobbit and LOTR and still be faithful to Tolkien and the story, Tolkien purists, lovers of Tolkien that are casual (me) that don't know a ton of the lore, or other people who've never read Tolkien, but love fantasy, it's still a fun experience! When I first saw the trailer of Fellowship Of The Ring, myself and everyone else in the theater went nuts that day, it was hard for all of us to wait until the movie came out, but on opening night for Fellowship Of The Ring the lines were huge, also for Star Wars, and being with like-minded people of all ages enjoy something together!

@@karlschmitt6359 I was born in 1977. I first watched Star Wars on a video tape borrowed from my uncle again and again. I remember seeing ROJ in cinemas but I have very little recollection of it. We haven’t watched the LOTR trilogy yet with either him or his sister. I have a rule that we have to read the books first. His sister is 10 and I read her the Harry Potter series and then went into the Hobbit and then LOTR. Really looking forward to watching the movies with them as they are so amazing and have held up so well. At the moment I am reading Harry Potter to my son (in the 5th book at the moment which needed more editing) So we are watching the 4th movie of Harry Potter (just me and the kids), and we are up to Return of the Jedi (neither kid was spoiled on the father twist) and have just started the MCU. We have a 120 inch screen and projector so it’s close to being in the cinema experience

The reason Yoda sounds lije a Muppet is because he was puppeteered and voiced by Frank Oz (with assistance by Kathryn Mullen, who's primerly did Mokey Fraggle in Fraggle Rock), who puppetered Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Sam the Eagle, Animal, Bert, Grover and The Cookie Monster, amongst others.

It looks like that a lot of the year, one of the scenes was shot on a nearby glacier. The lightsaber blades are hot so when they cut off a limb, they instantly cauterize wounds. That's why humans don't bleed. The only exception are Aqualish who are more like spiders (like Ponda Baba, one of the two thugs who started mess with Luke in the Cantina in A New Hope).

First off, there was no CGI in this movie. ZERO. All effects were done with real ship models and matte paintings and layering of film via a special motorized, tracking camera called a DYKSTRAFLEX camera system. 2nd, Luke's wrist was not bleeding because the wound/injury area was instantly cauterized from the incredibly hot lightsaber blade. 3rd: Regarding the great chemistry you mentioned between Han Solo and Princess Leia, well, aside from good acting and natural charisma ( Ford's especially ) another likely reason was that the two actors had a very brief affair while making the first Star Wars film 3 years before this film was released.
@UTU497 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, some movie goers who are under 30 will often use the term "CGI" to mean "special effects" in general. This is unfortunate, but a natural consequence of the fact that most special effects in the last 20 years have been CGI. Those of us who are keenly aware of pre-CGI Effects are aware that there are many different types of effects, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Puppetry, animatronics, stop-motion, etc.
