I'm glad you got to see a little bit of his off-stage demeanor. Humble is the key word with Stevie. Hardly ever mentioned is that Stevie lived by the Golden Rule. No amount of fame, fortune and accolades would, or could change him. One example is that he split his earnings evenly with his bandmates. There was so much more to the man than meets the eye.

…he was a VERY humble and sweet guy who had how many years during which he actually felt GOOD? three…? it’s just wrenching that he died after he stopped drinking, and btw, his Father and Brother were both alcoholics, too, so had Stevie sold paint, he would’ve had to have overcome that. 😢 he deserved to live A LOT longer.

This is after he got clean. Fell apart, went to rehab, thrived, and never looked back. He would drop everything for someone in recovery. Just a regular guy off the street. If they were seriously trying, he was there . A VERY special guy.

I was there at the funeral. It was 114 degrees outside in the Dallas sun! I was on photo assignment for a Dallas magazine, etc. Previously, I had the opportunity to photograph in my Dallas studio... Stevie, his mom, and girlfriend, Janna L., a few weeks before his tragic death. I only had two hours to shoot, then SRV and Janna had to leave for the airport. I took photos of SRV with Mom, then SRV with Janna, then SRV alone. I told him "pretend you are in your favorite place in the world. Just you and #1 guitar." "Now sit on the empty plastic milk crate. And play one of your favorite songs the best it will ever be played..." When it was time for SRV and Janna to go to the airport, I looked at him, said "you have to go now to the airport!" He said "What a great idea for these photos, John! Can't wait to see them!" I had one single frame of film left on the roll of film. Then he picked up his guitar, balanced it on his knee and left shoulder, and bowed his head to me. I took the photo... Days after SRV was dead. He never saw what I consider the greatest photo I have ever taken.... The "Final Bow of Stevie Ray Vaughan"...

Stevie was as humble as he was talented. During a visit, Stevie said something like, “Man, Donna, I’m so jealous of all you do! I mean you’re an artist and photographer and you work with those kids!” “But Stevie,” I said, “I’m not that great at any of those things. In 1990 I was a freshman in High School and just 2 years into playing guitar in really low level 'guitar class' in my schools where it was mostly an after-thought but at least got me a baseline to begin with. At the time I was in love with Pink Floyd, trying quite terribly to learn their songs and their lead guitarist David Gilmour was my original guitar idol (pretty lucky right there as he is his own unique style and one of the all time greats despite not playing fast he is still at his core a blues player though he expanded and played around with soundscapes being part of one of the greatest band of all time and of course as you said, it is always opinion - if you haven't checked out Pink Floyd yet you and decide to you have quite an amazing opportunity for absolute musical treasure - but David does have one of the most legendary guitar tones ever, a style of bending notes that is unlike anyone else, and his solo's have such power and melody and become such a prime element to the band's overall sound - so case in point once again to agree with your point it is so much each person's own feeling that matters in the "who is the greatest" thing) - they also brought me getting into Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page who is up there in any 'Greatest' list. But you'd have been hard pressed to convine me anyone was better than David Gilmour (and I still consider an all time great without a doubt). I remember some of the kids who were much better than me and had taken lessons and were really way more into guitar, one day being all shaken up because this guy Stevie Ray Vaughan had died. I recognized his name but that was all. But a couple of years after he died an amazing album "The Sky is Crying" was released - very carefully selected by his master guitar older brother Jimmy and friends and producers and people close to him, of some top hits but a lot of rare and unreleased tracks as well, and several started getting played on the radio and once I heard them I was floored - especially his version of "Little Wing" and bought the album and it captivate my soul and his sound and tone and - well you have seen him right so no need to explain - but he became my idol, I must have listened to that album a hundred times. Then I ordered a bootleg video from a catalogue because that was the only way in 1995 to do such things - of his "El Mocambo" concert and once I saw him do Texas Flood and "Lenny" live - my love for his music and him as a person was set in stone. To this day if I hear a certain song or see something about his passing I will still tear up a little bit, initially for a long time just plain cry - and this is for someone I didn't even know about when he was alive - crazy but music - and his is the type - the Blues - where there is so much soul, it isn't really crazy. And this interview is part of why - he was so gentle and humble and he had beaten addiction, the last 4 or 5 years of his life he stayed sober and went out of his way to spread that message to anyone in need of help. He also - even when he was in party mode - a great guy - it is a disease. But he knew he owed so much to the old blues masters he learned everything from to become who he was, and so many of them had been left behind and forgotten or never made hardly a dime at their height let alone as older men by then, they had to battle the racial situations of the 50's and 60's - and earlier and later of course still - and he made such an effort to shine the light on them - watch any video of him playing with BB King or Albert King (there is a whole In Studio concert of Stevie and Albert, who was amongst his top 3 or 4 greatest influences) - he always holds back - he never just blows them out of the water or tries to do anything but have fun getting to be on stage with HIS idols and make sure they got the spotlight as he was in his prime and they were older and still AWESOME but it wasn't who SRV was - he wanted everyone to see and hear and respect them and he would play great but turn it down a few notches so they could shine. For me he is the greatest ever but it is because he inspired me so much and I learned about him and what kind of a person he was and his willingness to speak about his struggles and I learn more about him every time I see this video it warms my heart so I am so glad you did this vid.

When I hear him in these interviews it's a very familiar kind of thing for me. Stevie grew up about 20 miles from where I've lived most of my life. My Step-Dad did some recording work in the 70's, and knew Stevie's older Brother Jimmie. From everything I know of Stevie, he was always totally down to earth. He would have strongly agreed with your sentiments about Jimi Hendrix.

Thank you for this, Polo. SRV got that big, fat sound from the heaviest guitar strings on the market. He had big, strong, fast hands. He was a great and humble person. According to Stevie's brother Jimmie Vaughan, (the great bluesman) “Albert King didn't like anyone, but he liked Stevie!"

SRV was a very humble kind and approachable fella. My folks got to hang with him after a gig, and he hosted them on his tour bus for several hours just chatting about music and holding court. And the part of this interview where he talk about his own vulnerabilities - I don't think it's breaching the code since it's already out there on youtube, but there's a speaker meeting where he speaks (at a group to which he belonged that is very near the front of the phone book) where he just lays out his own difficulties in dealing with life, why he went towards self medication for a while, and how he pulled up out of that nosedive. He was a singular fellow, and he left us way too soon. I'm glad you're reacting to his stuff, I'm reliving a lot watching along with you. Be well, sir!

Agreed with everything you said. What's amazing about guitar is that it serves as the "voice" for the guitarist. Stevie Ray was the best not only because of his skill, but because of his mind. No one could express himself with the guitar like he could. Perhaps that's why we've heard him talk infrequently. His guitar was his vocal instrument of choice. Guitar chords, not vocal cords.

Of course asking the question of who is the greatest guitarist of all time is subjective, and I do play. You really have to look at all genres and give each their own lane. Some guys can easily cross the lanes, some not so well. Some are acoustic oriented, others electric. Some primarily finger style, others more pick oriented. Jimi was Stevie's hero, so Stevie covered a number of his songs. I do believe Stevie was the better player, but Jimi was more creative and an original. Stevie is definitely rooted in blues. Then there are the jazz guys, classical, flamenco, etc.... let's just all enjoy the mastery and majesty they all bring. Oh...and I love your energy.....thanks

I always like your videos! I play guitar so I know how hard it is to play like S.R.V. I truly believe you would love reacting to Life Without You, live with S.R.V. You can watch him and switch guitars (with help from his crew) while never missing a note. He also drops his pick and sweeps it off the floor without missing a note. He also gives a short speech while playing that will let you see who the real S.R.V. was. What a great loss at only 35 years old.

There are some guitar players who I recognize without knowing they are on that track. Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix, imediately come to mind. So does Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Contrast the two SRV Austin City Limits performances. He always played great but the 2nd one was well after he got off the drugs and alcohol. He was so much healthier looking and totally comfortable and playing better than ever.

If you look at the brief film of the memorial service outside after his funeral, you will see ZZ Top in the crowd, and Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raittt, and Jackson Browne sang "Amazing Grace". I am sure there were others, these just came to mind. He always gave credit to the people he learned from like the great blues players B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, etc. Jimi Hendrix died when he was a kid, but Stevie was a big fan and covered a lot of Jimi's music.

I've heard that multilingual people almost adopt different "personalities" when switching languages. They adopt different mannerisms and gesture differently, etc. Stevie was fairly shy and reserved (although clearly very intelligent and articulate), but on stage... When he was in the zone, he became an axe-weilding, monstrous demigod. Interesting stuff.

I think I would agree with you regarding guitarists with the caveat, as you noted, that you will have your outliers which are not well equipped with decent personalities. In other words, a**holes as you noted. I had the absolute joy of sitting, talking and listening to Albert King in a small place in New Orleans, long ago. He was an absolute gentleman with the ladies, someone you could have a drink with for the men and a guitarist, well, I've listened to great ones but the combination of the man and the music was something that will remain with me forever. Thank you for this. I was in Texas as a young man when he was sneaking out to play at bars and followed him his entire life. I did not meet him but people whom I trust told me he was simply a good, a very good man.

I'm not exactly sure where I saw it was a while ago. There's a 3 or 4 part interview. With stevie It is before he cleans up. But you really see his personality. He's fun in some of the things that he says about Jimmy. Apparently he asked jimmy's dad could he do voodoo child. Makes you wonder when you know how he died. Just really makes you wonder, you should watch It. I wish I knew the name of it for you. But for the life of me I can't. It's a woman interviewing him it's in the bar where apparently they do a lot of these interviews with different bands. I know that's probably not much help. But I'm sure you can find it. There's also Stevie's rendition of Mary had little lamb. I didn't remember he did that until I heard it and then it brought back. I remember 1980s listening to Stevie. I'm watching him on MTV. my favorite jimmi hendrix song has gotta be wind crys marry its just a great song. also little wing jimmy hendrixs version not srvs cover is really good too. as well as castles made of sand. and in my opinion there is no greatest guitar player ever just great guitarists who have influenced the guitar world. hendrix being a big one as well as chet atkins, jimmy page, from led zepplin, david gilmore, of pink floyd, tommy emmanuel for the accoustic side of things. and then later on eddie van halen and dimebag darrel. and now ppl like tim henson from polyphia and john pettruci for sure. but if i had to pick the greatest one to live i would honestly have to say chet atkins. that dude was playing such crazy stuff back in the 50's i swear theres a video of him in black in white sweep picking arrpegios and its mind blowing lol

I suggest you check out some of the multitude of music documentaries that are out there on so many greats. BTW - you might not hear this otherwise but one part of this jam reminded me of Satch Boogie by Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Aliens album. Check him out on guitar - he's not SRV but nobody is.

Jimi opened the door to electric blues Stevie stormed raging through the door. Jimi did exist without Stevie the profound question is could have Stevie existed without Jimi? The logical answer is of course but his music would have been very different. In a very real sense Stevie was Stevie because of Jimi. The question who was better is absurd and extraneous it is like comparing the colors red and blue. Red is red and blue is blue when viewed together they complement each other. The same phenomena exist with Stevie and Jimi. Jimi’s Voodoo Chile is a masterpiece to be sure. Stevie took that masterpiece and redefined it everything is different yet is still the same in short Stevie took Jimi’s masterpiece and redefined it. What would have been absolutely awesome would have been to see Jimi and Stevie collaborate on Voodoo Chile. I am sure it would have collapsed the space time contagium and ended the universe but it would have been a mind melter. 😊
