They had a contest for someone to write the main song. They actually had another one that they liked and you can hear it when they are showing what happened to them. The soundtrack (which was portrayed as sort of a Playtone greatest hits album) had the other one as a hit for Jimmy and the Heardsmen after the Wonders.

This movie goes largely unnoticed in the movie CV for Tom Hanks. If one looks at the movies he starred in before and after this movie (1992 - 2002), one might think this little movie was a disappointment. I personally love it and believe it belongs in the insane list of movies that bookend it (A League Of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Toy Story, That Thing You Do!, Saving Private Ryan, You've Got Mail, Toy Story 2, The Green Mile, Cast Away, Road to Perdition and Catch Me If You Can). I mean, come on!! Who has a run like this in just ten years in the history of movies??

You might have said something in the full Patreon version, but... - When the band records "That Thing You Do!", Guy's Uncle Bob was played by singer Chris Isaak ("Wicked Game") - In the TV show sequence, the host Troy Chesterfield was played by Tom Hanks old "Bosum Buddy" Peter Scolari, from their Bosum Buddies sitcom days. They remained friends until Peter's passing a few years ago. Also, Astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom was played by Bryan "Walter White/Heisenberg" Cranston. Cranston did From the Earth to the Moon for PlayTone (Tom's production company) and played Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, as well being in the films Saving Private Ryan, Asteroid City, and Larry Crowne with Tom. They are also old friends. - In the Beach movie filming sequence, the director was played by Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), who directed Tom to his first Best Actor Oscar for Philadelphia with Denzel Washington. The Wonders movie band name Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters was taken from two South Carolina seafood restaurants that were near the Forrest Gump filming locations. Captain Geech's is closed now, but The Shrimp Shack is still open.

This is an excellent 1996 film that was directed by Tom Hanks. Inspired somewhat by the legendary Beatles and other groups such as the Dave Clark Five and Herman's Hermits, who were part of the musical British invasion of the mid 1960s. From the Wiki: There were at least two real groups named the Wonders who made the record charts at various radio stations in the early 1960s. One was a soul group who had a record called "Please Don't Cry" (b/w "With These Hands") that was cited in the September 1, 1962, issue of Billboard as having "moderate sales potential", but it was not successful. (The flip, however, was played by KCRG in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the fall of 1962.) The other Wonders had a regional hit record called "Say There" (b/w "Marilyn"; Colpix 699), released in August 1963. A mixed race doo wop group from New York City, they also recorded as the Satans Four. "Say There" hit the Top 20 at WCOL in Columbus, Ohio, and made the top 30 at KQV in Pittsburgh. In addition, the tune made the radio publication The Gavin Report as a regional hit in their August 16, 1963, issue. Some cast members: Liv Tyler (legendary actress/model who is the daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler), Charlize Theron (not well known at the time who would later become a big star), Peter Scolari (who was Tom Hanks co-star on their TV show Bosom Buddies), Chris Isaac (recording star in his own right), Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks' spouse), Colin Hanks (Tom Hanks' son), and Bryan Cranston (Walter White, Breaking Bad).

Adam Schlesinger who wrote the song and sang backup sadly died of Covid. Mike Viola sang it. Here they are doing a duo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKPPmIZjqZWeeLc The movie band did a good job of lip syncing and faking it.

Makes perfect sense that Jimmy became a producer. I don’t think he was all about the music; he was all about being in charge and “executing his vision.” Seems a logical leap into controlling other bands.

Hard to make this movie today. A musician hitting it big after uploading their song on soundcloud or TikTok wouldn't be a very compelling story.

This story does have a particular 60s specificity. A one hit wonder story would be very different even in the 70s or 80s

In the wake of the Beatles invasion in 1964, eveyone wanted to start a band. This story take place around 1965...Hanks got it right, managers, one hit Wonders, record company sleeze dogs trying to make a quick buck....Let's please get out of the 90's mindset and park it in 1965, the time period the story takes place. The sound of the Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitar was very prominent during thos years, and on of the band members was playing in a few scenes. The use of the electric 12 strng all started with George Harrison of the Beatles.
