I LOVE this movie, and love the hard to find TV series based on it even more (Cuzco is in high school, and Yzma is the principal!) but it think it could only be better with three or four more songs in it. Disney surely has the vocal tracks, and should release a special Platinum edition with the songs (animated!) restored.

Eartha Kitt was a serious asset to this movie. I'm not sure how many people know of her now but she was a smokin' hot actress/singer/all around performer for many years - mostly on the stage after she made some critical remarks about the Vietnam War at a White House function and pissed everybody off. She was one of several actresses to play Catwoman on the "Batman" TV show, among many other things. She was no longer young when this movie came up and she was surprised to be asked to work on it but accepted the gig playing Yzma with enthusiasm and rolled with the drastic change in the production from a song-based epic based on "The Prince and the Pauper" to what it is now. The directors were thrilled to be working with her but when her recording dates approached they worried that a woman of her vintage might take offense at all the 'scary old lady' gags in the script. They were almost too scared to have her read it and were considering typing up another script just for her without all that stuff in it, just in case, but much to their surprise and delight she fell about laughing at all that stuff, and even came up with some more that they would never have dared to suggest.

Admittedly, the plot, character designs, and character developments are comparatively one-dimensional. Don't get me wrong, the whole plot line about Kuzco's ego and Pacha's kindness are fantastic; but, there's not a lot of depth to it. What makes this movie really great is the comedy, which is only one thing for the critics to consider.
@kaylons3 жыл бұрын
@@Klffsj I mean, true. Can't deny that... but one-dimensional? I would rather say formulaic and full of static characters than that.
@Klffsj3 жыл бұрын
@@kaylons When i say one-dimensional, I mean to say that there's not a lot of detail. If you take a typical Pixar movie, for example, it's full of all kinds of character attributes and developments, symbolism, poetic storytelling, etc-it's multidimensional. With this, it's pretty cut and dry: Kuzco is selfish and egotistical, and his respect was given; Pacha is a caring and forgiving person who has earned his respect; Yzma is a vile and jealous servant who worked for her position; Kronk is comedic relief; and the story is about Kuzco learning selflessness as he develops a true friendship (and not much more)-one-dimensional. I would actually argue that it's not too formulaic or static (maybe a little though). This being a comedy that breaks the fourth wall, there were a lot of small twists in the plot. And, I feel like the characters actually have lots of "up" and "down" moments emotionally, showing their dynamics.

I knew a guy who worked at Disney Animation during the tail end of this movie's production. He was talking it up (discreetly, of course) as the best thing Disney had done so far but also saying that the marketing people hated it and weren't making much of an effort to promote it beyond the promotional deals that were already contracted that they couldn't get out of - not that that's nothing, but compared to other Disney movies of the time they really didn't do much. Notes were coming from a bunch of execs asking that everything be rewritten to make Kuzco more likable and less unpleasant - 'fire David Spade' they said - and there needed to be a beautiful princess for Kuzco to sing cool hit songs with and have a romantic relationship. There was a self-styled 'old school' faction that thought the Looney Tunes direction was sacrilege to the Disney brand and they were pushing to burn the negative or at least bury the film on video. Fortunately for us so much money had been spent on the cancelled version that none of the folks wanting yet another top-down revamp of the production got any traction and the decision was made to press on and hope for the best. It made back its budget but it didn't make crazy money, so it was viewed as a failure at the time. It always gave me a sore tummy from laughing so much though.

This originally was supposed to be a full on musical drama and a retelling of The Prince And The Pauper but set in South America. They hired Sting to write the score and all the songs. It was 50% done when they began audience testing and it scored poorly. So Disney revamped it and all but one of Sting’s songs was thrown out. Directors changed at least 3 times and lots of animators left. At one point they had two different versions being made concurrently by two directors. If you’re wondering why production wasn’t halted during this turbulence, it’s because merchandising tie-ins were already set with Coke and McDonald’s, so they couldn’t stop or move the release date

@21:00 disney /LOVES/ colored line art and character outlines. theyve been heavily used in their movies since the beginning, minus the xerox days. i bet it looked messy or something got fucked up with color outlines on the xerox process. go peek some cinderella screenshots in hd for all the rich brown, red, pink, and blue linework highlighting everything! and /then/ really really take a close look at sleeping beauty, the most gorgeous disney movie ever animated. absolutely DRIPPING with style and class.

I was so excited to see this one come up on your channel; it’s my favorite Disney movie for humor, and it’s so unique in that (and it makes a lot of sense in that, when you think about the actors involved: David Spade, John Goodman, Patrick Warburton, etc.). So glad you enjoy it as much as I always have - SO funny and SO SO quotable!! Living proof that dinosaurs once roamed the earth… 😂

They made a movie about Kronk called Kronk's New Groove. It was really bad though. They also made a TV series called The Emperor's New School, where Kuzco needs to get a degree before he can rule. It's 52 episodes, and it's really good. Definitely worth watching if you can find it.
@gailjohnston12483 жыл бұрын
So glad y'all watched this, it really is hysterical! And they had the right fit for all the characters which is awesome. David Spade always has been good at snarky deadpan. And Eartha Kitt was a big get back then. She was once a Cat Woman in the Batman Tv series ages ago. Patrick Warburton is very well known for his voice, and as an actor. They characterized him as his persona in Kronk just so well! It was fun watching y'all enjoy it all so much. 😁

This is one of the best and most hilarious animated movies ever made. I watched it for the first time with my son when he was about 5. After that, it was on constant rotation at our house so much that it felt like for a time in our lives we basically communicated with each other through all the stand out lines in this movie. 😆 Great memories.

28:15 In the LATAM version, Yzma says "I was dreaming about Ricky!!!" (Ricky Martin). The dub was so good that always i end watching it dubbed in LATAM (I prefer the originals 90% of the times, but sometimes the dub is so good)

I love how the only two musical numbers of the movie are the opening song and the reprise so there's no other songs to detract from the change in Kuzco they were emphasizing with them.

this is probably one of my favorite Disney movies, top three, if we're being honest. And it's probably not as popular because it's NOT a Princes movie or a musical, but that allows them to focus on the comedy, which is the biggest strength of it, I'd say. Also, there's a sequel...starring Kronk!

9:56 I wonder how good Incan desserts were to have Yzma stop and not go on with the plan. I don’t know if they were using cocoa beans and enjoying the invention of chocolate in their time period. Because let’s face it that’s got to be the only dessert worth stopping a criminal act.
@bellsthesultana3 жыл бұрын
Just a fun fact: they were! Incas had cacao, although the seeds were snacked on and it wasnt consumed at all like modern chocolate, peruvian cacao was extremelly important historically speaking!
