It's hard to know because he probably dyes his facial hair so he might even be older then the Sultan. Jasmine is said to be 15 yrs old (they changed her age to 16 now in current info but old info about this movie has her as 15) and Aladdin 18. Good thing Disney decided to start making her clothing a little less revealing on dolls and things like that years ago, if they had just made her 18 in the first place it would have been a little less weird to have her portrayed as she is.

It's cool that you guys noticed the blue outlines in Jasmine's hair. I saw a post online that pointed it out & also noted that Esmeralda has grey outlines & Mulan has brown. So the animators do play around with that sort of thing. Also, don't know if you knew this or not but the Genie was literally made with Williams in mind. The creators themselves came out & said that if Robin hadn't agreed to the role (which he almost didn't 'cause he was working on Ferngully around the same time Aladdin was being made) they weren't sure what they would've done from there or who to go with as back-up. So, they convinced Robin to take the role by animating Genie to some audio of Robin's own comedy bits.

So the original lyrics for Arabian Nights were "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face. It's barbaric, but hey it's home" but was changed after several Arabic countries hated that, but they missed the point of how it is supposed to showcase a tough area and only the strong survive, Jafar's design was modeled after Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and to help match the design in the rest of the film the characters were given an Al Hirshfeld aesthetic to them, Jafar's voice actor Johnathan Freeman has been the only one to voice him in all media whether direct to video, video games, toys, House of Mouse and still plays him in the Broadway show, The directors cameo in the crowd as the two people on each side of Aladdin as they watch the procession of Prince Achmed to the palace, An interesting detail is when Aladdin lies while as Prince Ali the feather on his turban will fall in front of his face, One of the Toy figures that the Sultan is stacking is one of the Beast from Beuaty and the Beast, The design on the carpet shows the story of the film, One original plot element was supposed to reveal at the end of the merchant from the beginning showing up again and revealing to have been the Genie and the directors even confirmed that the merchant and the Genie are one in the same, Aladdin's face was modeled after Tom Cruise, At the end of the end credits you can hear the Genie say “You have been a fabulous audience! Tell you what, you’re the best audience in the whole world. Take care of yourselves. Good night Alice. Good night Agrabah. Adios Amigos.”

I watched this movie on VHS like a thousand times when I was 3; I can still recite it word-for-word from memory to this day. I remember learning the bit about the lyrics change when I was listening to the music CD as a kid, and the CD had the original lyrics on it and I’m like “that’s not the words, what?!” And it’s fascinated me since how things can change after release like that, and that there’s always evidence around of the earlier versions.
@LordofFullmetal2 жыл бұрын
I feel it's kinda unfair for you to say "the Arabic countries just didn't get the point". The point was racist, dude. At the time that was the ONLY Arabic representation most of the world had, and the first thing they tell you is that it's backwards and barbaric. Especially given this film came out less than a decade before 9/11, which was the SECOND exposure to Arabic culture the world at large had - do you really not see how that could be harmful? You don't get to decide FOR marginalised groups what they should or shouldn't be offended by. That's not your place, and it's not your right. You are not them. You haven't walked in their shoes. You don't know what it's like. Don't act like you know what they can handle.
@jamesmoyner74992 жыл бұрын
@@LordofFullmetal First of all don’t put words in my mouth. Second the setting of the film is either set in ancient past or post apocalyptic future (as some theorize because of Genie’s references). Also you seem to forget the part of the film where after Jasmine gives the fruit to the kid her hand was going to be cut off. Pfft of course that isn’t a negative stereotype of that region at all is it? Also I wasn’t saying what they should or shouldn’t be offended by. The lyrics are to set up it is a tough world to live in and only the strong survive (thus Aladdin’s story). How about you think things through before criticizing me.

I'm pretty sure you can see scenery like that in Lake Como (where they filmed Naboo in Star Wars)...definitely worth seeing :) PS: When NTB called out the thief claiming to be the diamond in the rough and said "I feel like you're the rough" I was laughing for a good minute haha. 40:42 that was Howard Ashman's idea. He wrote the original treatment for Aladdin with songwriting partner Alan Menken and gave it to Disney when he was still working on Little Mermaid (he was lyricist and producer of Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast). Originally, it was a mix of the Aladdin story and 1940s style buddy comedies, which is where the music style comes in. They wrote a few songs for the treatment, three of which made it into the finished film: Arabian Nights, Friend Like Me, and Prince Ali. Some of the cut songs made it into the Broadway version. Sadly, he wasn't able to see it to completion because he passed away from struggles with AIDS in 1991. He's truly a legend
@EChacon Жыл бұрын
Apparently Howard Ashman wanted to focus on doing _Aladdin_ until both him and Alan Menken were approached to help reinvigorate and save the production of _Beauty and the Beast,_ which was going nowhere as a non-musical. Ashman, wishing to focus on _Aladdin_ and his health, reluctantly agreed to help with the music for _Beauty and the Beast_ It was at this time that his health began to decline due to his illness, regardless, he completed lyrical work on _Beauty and the Beast_ before his passing in March of 1991. Following Ashman’s passing, Tim Rice was brought in as Lyricist to write new songs 4 of which ended up on the final film and these were "One Jump Ahead" (and its reprise), "A Whole New World", and Prince Ali (Reprise).

I think because Jasmine is a princess w wealth it's easy to think her life is better. But thinking abt her story, she's a 15 yr old w little choice in her future, no friends, and a very controlled environment w no understanding of her subjects. She's trying to survive in her own way w the hand she was dealt. She's expected to be satisfied w riches and a loveless marriage where she's outranked by the men in her life. But she doesn't back down. She seeks her own freedom and learns to use the power she hated to use against her enemies. I find that incredible despite the small role. She's smart and feisty, and wants to use her power to do good and provide for others. There's no bad characters in this film honestly. I love all of them, but I think a lot of ppl don't consider how different Jasmine was in comparison to the princesses before her. She wasn't always sweet, she wasn't waiting for a solution, and she could hold her own. I love that in later films and series, she actively engages in the battles, punching and using a whip. Proving her worth to sexist men. Having her own internal battles. Sorry I'm ranting I just rly love her character >_< Aladdin the Animated series needs to get on Disney+ pronto!

14:44 In this shot, the melting ape statue was animated with a series of hastily-crafted pencil illustrations, which were colored digitally. Unlike the characters, who were only drawn with contour lines (like most animated characters), they had to draw the shadows and textures on this ape statue, and animate them to move consistently in every consecutive frame. 🧐 If you want to see more of this, take a look at some animation by Richard Williams, such as A Christmas Carol (1971) or Raggedy Ann And Andy; A Musical Adventure.

This came out the year I was born and has some of my favorite songs/cinematography as far as Disney movies go. I always loved the tiger shaped cave especially. Robin Williams was incredible as Genie. 💙 Btw totally agree about Jasmine having the best animal sidekick. 🐯

Fun Fact: In the original text of 1001 Arabian Nights, the whole story of Aladdin and the Lamp takes place in China. Of course, the author knew very little about China and its culture. Genies don't really exist in Chinese folklore. And many other Arabic cultural elements were projected onto the Chinese location (e.g., the name "Aladdin" - doesn't sound anywhere close to a Chinese name). After all, Arabia wouldn't seem all that magical and exotic if you lived there, but China would.

Please consider the film "The Thief of Bagdad" from 1940; it heavily influenced Disney's Aladdin and is a visual delight!

Made that same suggestion before I saw your Comment! ... I Love 1942's "The Jungle Book" too!

@@jamesalexander5623 I haven't seen Jungle Book yet, but I probably should. Thief of Bagdad is just a special film, isn't it? One of my personal favorites

yeah, Disney's Aladdin is closer to "The Thief of Badgad" than the actual story of Aladdin. As usual Disney just does whatever they want regardless of the original story.

The outfit that the Genie wears (including Goofy hat) is from Robin Williams appearance in the Disney-MGM (now Hollywood Studios) film Back to Never Land.
