It’s ironic that the mother who has “no religious beliefs” begs desperately for help from a priest who has “lost his faith”. In the end Father Karass sacrifices his life to save a little girl who he never really knew. I think he found his faith at that point and also lost his guilt from not saving his mother. A “neck lobotomy”??? 👏🏻🤣 The medical procedure that Regan is undergoing a cerebral angiography. This procedure is used to examine the blood vessels in the brain, which was part of her medical evaluation as doctors tried to diagnose her symptoms. During this scene, contrast dye (likely iodine-based) is injected into a large blood vessel in her neck, most likely the carotid artery or the jugular vein. This dye allows blood vessels in the brain to become visible on X-ray imaging, highlighting any abnormalities in blood flow or structural issues (you can see the doctors evaluating the resulting scan images afterwards). To facilitate the dye injection, a needle is inserted into her neck, after which a catheter is placed in the artery. Once the dye is injected, a series of X-rays is taken to capture the flow of blood through the brain. The graphic details shown on film of the procedure adds to the unsettling nature of the film. This scene was particularly impactful due to the use of actual medical professionals and realistic medical equipment, adding to the movie's authenticity and shock value. It’s considered one of the most disturbing medical sequences in film history.

@@barrycohen311 Ahh...but very similar thing is done to this day. E.g. if you ever need a echo cardiography to visualize the blood flow of your heart - they do something similar. But instead of the neck they insert a wire/tube in your wrist(!) or your groin(!) and thread this wire all the way through your blood vessels until it sits right next to the heart. Then they inject dye into the heart in pulses while using a ultrasound scanner to pickup the flow data. Injection of misc contrast dyes for imaging purposes is used in many ways to this day. The machines just looks quite a bit more futuristic. What we should be REALLY happy aobout is that the age of Pneumoencephalography is no longer used. The procedure was considered extremely painful - as all the fluid was drained from your skull/brain - and replaced with air. This would give a better x-ray picture. However the change in pressure on the brain and spine would result in som near intolerable headache like pain. "extreme pain" and "severe vomiting" is mentioned by medical professionals (and if they say "extreme pain"...trust me...that means extreme). It also involved being strapped into a special chair that would let you be spun into various positions - such as upside down - in order to let all fluid out and air in.

Georgetown and Georgetown University are indeed in Washington DC, the university and those creepy stairs still look nearly exactly the same as they did in 1973. The staircase is officially known as the exorcist steps and has an official plaque from a ceremony in which the screenwriter and book writer, William Peter Blatty, and the film director, William Friedkin both attended in their last appearance together before the both died. The house used in the exterior shots still exists, but is much smaller in real life. They built a fake extension onto the house to make it appear grander in the film and so that Reagan’s bedroom would be over the staircase. I live in DC, so I’ve been to the location several times over the decades. I was 9 years old when the movie came out, and I remember the TV trailers scared tf out of me. The exorcism lasted weeks during which the boy was confined inside a hospital in one of the southern states. The boy's identity was kept secret. He eventually grew up to become a technician for NASA. You asked a question about what Reagan had to do to be possessed. Many supernatural events like that happen to children who are on the verge of starting puberty. Possession, poltergeist activities, etc. I was 19 when this movie was released and it became something of a cultural phenomenon. We used to play with Ouija boards when we were kids. No one thought anything about it as it was considered just a parlor game. It wasn't until this movie that people started to become leery of them.

To achieve a true "floating" effect -- an ethereal effect -- the bed is heavily counter-weighted so it "wants" to fly up, and the stagehands are holding it down. By gently, gradually releasing it, it seems to airily float up.

a bit of background..... This movie was based on a novel by William Peter Blatty which was itself based on an actual exorcism of a 14 year old boy from Maryland which happened in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. It took several weeks, the last few of which took place in the old Alexian Brothers hospital in south St. Louis, which as since been torn down. According to the priests journals, the events were similar to those in the movie but a bit toned down, no spinning heads or floating beds. Also, the part of Father Dyer, the younger priest who gave last rites at the end, was played by Fr. William J. O'Malley, an actual Jesuit priest who was brought onto the film originally as a consultant, but then given a small part. Father O'Malley, until his recent passing, taught at Fordham Prep School in the Bronx, NY.

Growing up, we always heard the book & film were based on an actual case (true), the child was male (true), and it occurred in Europe (false). The young man on whom the book and film were based actually went on to have a very long and quite successful career with NASA, working on the Apollo missions and even the Space Shuttle. He did, however, live his life in fear of his identity being revealed, in particular to his colleagues at NASA. It was not; he passed a little over a year before it was revealed. Since then, I’ve personally found it yet another example of filmmaking genius- the oh-so-subtle nod to the IRL individual- Regan speaking directly to the Astronaut at the party. The IRL gentleman also graduated from Georgetown University. It is actually quite impressive it was so well kept under wraps as the priests involved took copious amounts of notes across 2 states as the family moved- and they only changed the young man’s first name by flipping 2 letters and his last to Doe. Of course, it would likely be near impossible today to maintain his anonymity for such a long time. His name is now out there, easily found w a simple search; it’s simply a personal choice not to publicly declare it. He did once tell an individual w whom he was particularly close: ‘I was never possessed; I was merely a rather mischievous and even naughty boy.’ So there’s that lol The film holds up amazingly well 50+yrs later- wish I could say same for self😂😩 Maybe that’s bc the power of fries compel me🤷♀️🍟 Really enjoyed your reaction! Here's an explanation I left on another Exorcist video that people seemed to like.... Pazuzu is an ancient demon that you can’t kill. You can only drive it away, which Father Merrin had done once before in Africa. Essentially the film is sort of round two between those two characters and we pick up the story in the midst of that timeline. It confuses a lot of viewers and it’s laid out a bit more in the book. The movie starts in Iraq because Pazuzu is a demon from Babylonian mythology and Father Merrin is studying this, so he's on a dig in Iraq. Also the Middle East is the home of the three major Abrahamic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and where a lot of ancient empires and belief systems converged. So you’re sort of telling an ancient story in modern times with modern characters. There’s also the idea of America being the new Babylon, a sinful and materialistic place devoid of godliness but I’m not sure if that association is intentional or not in the story. The ouïja board being a doorway to the spiritual realm, pretty much means Pazuzu could have re-entered the world anywhere, but perhaps with America arguably being a place of false idols (represented by an actress) and waning spirituality (represented by a compromised priest), the setting is less coincidental and more symbolic of a narcissistic and spiritually weakened world that allows Pazuzu to re-emerge through an unprotected, spiritually vulnerable child?

This movie came out 3 years before Rocky did. 12:05 -- That's a spinal tap...old school MRI where they have to inject tracer die into the brain so you can see what's up in the x-ray. The guy that Regan said, "You're gonna die up there" was an astronaut; you guys were talking over the scene where they said who he was. There are some added scenes in the Director's Cut, one of which has Merri and Karras talking after the first round of exorcism and explaining what they were thinking during the ritual. It also includes a suggestion that there isn't any reason why Regan was picked...she just was. Merrin had a heart attack; he was taking nitroglicerine pills, an old-school medicine for a heart condition. It's a coincidence that Merrin found a similar medal to the one that Karras wore; but they were worn for the same purpose -- to ward off evil. You saw the statue from Iraq in the beginning in Regan's bed during the ritual. You can't kill a demon. You can just send them home.
@darrenbent76012 ай бұрын
Burke Dennings was the drunk man who left the party before the piano scene, the demon was talking to the astronaut. The statue, and the head that was discovered in the cave were of the demon Pazuzu, which was the spirit that possessed Regan. As to how she got possessed, I believe that it was through the Ouija Board. I don't believe that the saint medallion had anything to do with the possession, but it was used as protection, which is why Father Karras could be possessed, when the medallion was removed from around his neck. I believe that that covers all of the connections.

The neckless is a protection charm. Just like Pentagrams are. Which is why Regan had to rip it off before taking over Damian. Also, the demon has to be invited in so he used the Oujia board to trick Regan into letting him in. He needed to take over someone so he could get revenge on Father Merrin who defeated him before. When Merrin found the charm in Iraq he knew that same demon was there at some point and that the Iraqis had it for protection. So he took it back with him. He gave it to Damian as a necklace to protect him during the exorcism with Regan. Since nobody was around inviting the demon in after Damian died no one else was possessed after that. And no one will be unless he can get someone to invite him in again. This is what I love about older movies. They leave it for the audience to watch the movie and figure it out. Movies now want to explain everything like we're not smart enough to think for ourselves anymore. We've become so used to that now that if it's not explained in the movie we can't seem to figure it out anymore. Good job checking out older films. Your critical thinking skills will thank you! LOL!

I think when taking x-rays of the brain, they had to introduce some sort of trace element to her blood (thru her neck!), so that vessels in her brain could be x-rayed and photos taken. The medical procedure involves accessing an artery in the neck to which a fluorescent dye in injected. then they can take pictures of the dye as it travels through the blood vessels in the brain and see if there is an area where the dye leaks out from the veins or pools into a damaged area, which would indicate a lesion or perhaps an aneurysm.

one could argue that there was no presence of God/Jesus in that home and a flat out rejection of faith, the mom was bent out of shape when she found the crucifix under the pillow. I think because of this the door for possession was wide open, and yes the Ouija board could've been the invitation.

Yes, the film is based on a novel. It mentions that when the Iraqi waiter asks him if he wants anything else, the priest notices a piece of chickpea that the waiter has on the corner of his lips. The statue and the head that the priest observes in Iraq represent, if I remember correctly, the demon Pazuzu.

I think the 88 doctors is just an expression. In Spain we use the number 40 to indicate that something has been used in large quantities.

It is assumed that when the priest dies while possessed, his soul goes to hell (although there is a possibility that his sacrifice will redeem him) and the demon returns to Hell. Something very curious and that no one comments on is that despite how much her mother loves Regan, she stays still when she sees the girl crying on the floor in a corner, instead of approaching to comfort her. To that extent, she was terrified by her behavior during the possession.

A Catholic perspective: The girl was simply the bait to get to the two priests - The priests died (martyred) to liberate her. The demon seemed to play them like chess pieces, but he ultimately lost the battle. Yes, priests and all Catholics may drink alcohol, but we are not supposed to over-indulge (humans are not perfect, so forgive us). Cheers, and Semper Fi!

The little statue Fr. Maron found at the beginning is a demon statue that was often placed above children's beds in ancient times. It was believed that that demon would ward off the demons that would come to kill the children. It was fighting evil with evil as was mentioned at the beginning of the movie.

The answer to whether priests can smoke and drink depends on the specific denomination and religious tradition. Some religions, such as the Baháʼí Faith, forbid the consumption of alcohol and other drugs unless prescribed by a physician. However, in Christianity, the Bible is ambivalent towards alcohol, considering it both a blessing from God and a potential danger. Catholic priests, for example, are allowed to drink alcoholic beverages, as long as they are of legal age and have not made any personal decisions to abstain. Some orders, such as the Benedictines, have even brewed and distilled their own alcohol for centuries. Ultimately, the relationship between Catholics and alcohol is complex and varies across different traditions and individuals.

The movie is very faithful to the novel (the novelist also wrote the screenplay for the movie). If you read the book it fills in some of the loose ends the movie leaves you with. There is also an extended director's cut from 2000 that most fans seem to prefer. I do not.. I find the original 1973 cut to be "leaner and meaner." But everybody has an opinion and that's just mine. :) I thought your reaction was intelligent and interesting. I loved seeing the movie again through the eyes of a much younger generation! Kudos!

I guess you missed the Ouija board scene? Where it moved itself and had been interacting with Regan for some time. The Ouija Board is the conduit for the demon to come through.. it needed Regan to manifest itself. The demon is who the Priests knew and had a historical attachment with... that's the full circle.

the demon was Pazuzu , King of the Wind demons .. the pan handler on the street was creepy . You could tell he was being manipulated , possessed . Pazuzu was everywhere . Regan's mom was played by Ellen Burnstyn . They hooked up cables to her back when Regan hit her they pulled too hard ..the scream she let out was real . She had back problems after . The director's cut has the scene with the spider walk down the stairs .. worth checking out .

I imagine he took the Demon with him when he took the fall. The falling coin is used in various places throughout the film. A stylistic device used by the director. Falling. coin associated with loss. The demon was known by Merrin. It's origen was Iraq. Why Georgetown? Good question. I do however know Georgetown. I lived nearby. The staircase is at the back of a parking lot, it is unmistakable The place is also beautiful in the fall. The movie was terrifying, every time there was a noise from the girls room. everyone shuddered to know what horrible thing would occur next. Like a pavlova bell, or the. jaws theme. The sounds alone freaked the audience. Blasphemy onscreen was too much for many. The movie was beautifully crafted.

Just a couple of tips, guys… You’re making common mistakes a lot of ‘reactioners’ make. 1. The volume of the target film is wayyyy too low compared to the volume of you two. There’s a gross imbalance so that if I turn up the volume to hear the dialogue, you two come acrooss as almost unbearably loud. I think you need to both turn down your volume and turn up the film’s volume to try to create a balance. 2. Your talking is actually good and inquisitively complementary to the film, but… you do seem to miss a lot of important dialogue I notice. Just thought I’d point these things out.

Not only is this movie one of the best horror movies ever made, it is also one of the best movies ever made period. It was nominated for the best picture Oscar and should have won. If you want to see a great sequel check out the exorcist 3 but only the theatrical version. The directors cut is definitely not the one to watch as it complete changed the plot. Do NOT bother with exorcists 2 at all. It has nothing to do with this movie. Exorcist 3 pics up with the detective, although they had to use a different actor named George C Scott. If you want to find out what happened to Father Karras then this is it. It is more of a physiological thriller more than a horror movie. Turn down the lights again and enjoy. Great film

This movie tries to let the viewers know who the key characters are by showing each one in their own setting, father Merrin archeologist/priest, who (as we learn) had dealt with the demon before, Damien Karras, a psychologist/priest, who feels he has lost his faith and then the mother and daughter dynamic between Chris and Regan Macneil. They do a slow build up with the story, (I believe for suspense). At the Macneil party when Regan comes down and tells that man "You're gonna die up there.", that man was an astronaut, earlier he was talking to the priest, who tells him, the next time he goes back up there, to take him too, (meaning space), the small statue, that the detective found was one Regan's, which led him to believe that Burk was thrown out of Regan's bedroom window. The necklace that was found in Regan's bedroom was not the same as at the dig in Iraq, it's a St. Christopher medal, which is used for protection but, I believe the one that was discovered at the dig was used to help seal away the demon, in other words I believe they ended up releasing the demon at the dig site. Remember the statue that father Merrin was staring at? Well, that was a statue of the demon named Pazuzu, which is mentioned in "The Exorcist 2". When the necklace was ripped off of Damien by the demon, he was no longer protected, so the demon jumped into him, and Damien felt his only way to save Regan was to take the demon down with him.

@@jrooksable Look, I KNOW HOW IT WORKS, IN REAL LIFE, OK? What I'm talking about is, what I believe, THEY DID in reference to the pendant there, at the archeological dig, using that pendant for a way to keep it from leaving that place. Anyway THAT DEMON in the movie is named PAZUZU NOT SATAN. It's revealed in the second Exorcist movie. As far as who has the power of protection, well, I have my own beliefs, oh I definitely believe in Jesus, but my believe is that his father, his HEAVENLY father, is the almighty Jehovah god, I was born as a Jehovah's witness. I've had my own issues with the paranormal and it was nothing to laugh at, I know the power of Jehovah god's name alone. Demons and Satan himself fear his name. Jesus is Jehovah's son, and definitely with the help of Jesus you can banish all demonic influences, but when you invoke Jehovah's name, it's a whole different ball game, more powerful. I was in the ministry school, to become a minister at the age of 11. I've been tormented by the forces of evil, off and on, throughout my life, but I've always fought them off in the name of Jesus Christ and Jehovah God, amen. Even through this movie they (demons) messed with me, I was twelve and it 1973, (quite the coincident, huh?) But I can't go into that, I've written way enough already, don't you think?
