Jyn x Ryl: I was 20 when I saw The Exorcist in a darkened, sold-out theater in 1973. This was the first high-quality horror movie; the first about demonic possession. We knew nothing about it, much less - believed it was possible - until this movie. We knew it was based on a true story. We weren't desensitized to the vile language, violence, or special effects as people are now. For those & more reasons, for us 1973 audiences, The Exorcist was 10X scarier than any movie we saw before, after, or ever will see. The proof is that people were running down the aisles during the movie to the lobby to vomit or feint during the movie. No other movie EVER scared the audience that much. NEVER. No other movie comes close to how scary this was for us in 1973;l not close.

Like you said at first, Father Merrin had a heart attack because he already had a weak heart. The demon didn't directly kill him; it was just the effort. His faith was very strong, but his body was weak. Damien had a weak faith, but a strong body.

And even in this Director's Cut version, there was still one thing that didn't come across as powerfully as the book did, and that is that Father Karras actually died a happy person. This exorcism proved to him beyond any doubt there was a devil, so if there was a devil, there had to be a God. I wish the movie could have made that more obvious, but I know everybody who worked on the movie did their very best - and I STILL think this is one of the best book-to-screen adaptions I've ever seen.

@@flmlvr I think it's obvious in the movie. The look on his face when the bed levitates - contrasts much with the supercilious scientist attitude he took towards Regan as he attempted to rationalise away her possession. He's far more afraid of God than he is of a demon - demons and darkness and evil are only the negative space of God. A Christian's faith in God requires seeing God in one's fellow man - Karras wasn't really able to do this as evinced b yhis disgust at the homeless man, a moment of weakness the demon picked up on. Him choosing to sacrifice himself and the resolve he has in that scene which is very different from the character he had before is an obvios testament to his restored faith. It doesn't need to be more 'obvious' and people not getting it aren't getting the themes anyway - you seem to think he should have been smiling as he threw himself thru the window or something which is ridiculous, Christ wasn't smiling on the cross either

Glad you got to experience what is widely regarded as the BEST horror movie ever made. No jump scares, no silly gimmicks, just a horror that gets inside your head. Its not only regarded as the best horror film, but also one of the best films ever made. Books have literally been written on this. Masterpiece of cinema.

My mother wouldn't let me watch this when I was a kid. I snuck out of my room, turned the volume down, and sat about 3 feet away from the television to watch it. I was 10 years old and had nightmares almost every night for about a week or so. Noticed your edit cut out the most iconic shot in the movie...Father Merrin arriving at the house. It was inspired by René Magritte's painting, The Empire of Light.

Saw this on television. I lived alone in a small apartment. The movie started in the evening when there was still daylight in the room. It ended in the dark. Afterwards, I was so unnerved that I had to go out for a ride to where there were some bright lights

29:40. I love that you said: "that poor girl, she said no, she was trying to fight it." That's what make that scene even more horrific to me. Regan was begging the demon not to force her into doing that unspeakable act. The absolute terror she must have felt! that poor child 😟.

Hi ladies, being only 9 years old when this movie came out, it’s been scaring me half my life. It’s now my favorite horror movie of all time, and in my humble opinion , a masterpiece in film making. I live in DC, and very close to Georgetown where a lot of the filming locations are located. For a better understanding of how this movie shocked audiences in 1973, there’s several documentaries here on KZbin. Even I remember stories of my older brothers who went to see it, were talking about people fainting and throwing up in the theaters. There were long lines too and sold out shows.

Well, according to the most popular/known 72 demons of the "Book of Salomon" (a mystic, Judeo-Christian book of fallen angels that also mentions Pazuzu/Reagan's demon), "Foras"/or "Forcas" teaches philosophy, ethics, makes one witty, helps to find precious gemstones, grants long life... & supposedly appears as a strong man w/ a big d*ck. So he doesn't sound too bad to me(?)! But don't take my word for it ^^

I think this is STILL one of the scariest movies to date, because it is NOT far fetched. Possession s & exorcisms still take place today,and people know this could happen. I'm not talking about looking exactly like the little girl did, or head spinning around, and vomiting 🤮 quarts of vomit. I'm talking about possessions where you are NOT in control of yourself, but by evil entities. Movies like Freddy Krueger, Jason, Michael Myers, where these characters cannot die are not seen as 😱 scary, because people know that cannot be true, but possessions are true,and most likely to happen out in the real world.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱 2. The priest "Tom" that Karras first confess his lack of faith to was a real Catholic priest IRL. 3. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣4. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 5. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit. 6. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 7. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually her coccyx was fractured when the demon makes her hard fall. Her painful look is real. 8. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 9. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 10. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith.😇 10 RIP William Friedkin.😇

The movie usually sneaks up on you when you are alone and you suddenly find yourself thinking about it. Jump scares and gore are the modern movie tropes but back then it was usually more about the psychological aspect. Funnily, modern movies don't scare me at all.

i was only scared once by the exorcist, when i was staying overnight at my stepdads moms house, for no good reason other than they wanted me to for fun once when i was a kid.. and i was feeling uncomfortable, and couldnt sleep when they all went to bed.. so i got up and went into the living room, and turned on the tv, and as soon as the picture came on, it was an ad for the exorcist showing that part where her head spins around the second time, and snaps into place.. and i was like what the f, and turned it off

I really like your reaction!! You both were calm, paying attention to the details, commenting only when it was necessary. Comparing to other reactors who non stop talking and trying making jokes all the time for everything. If you like this masterpiece, I'd like to recommend you another movie about possession: The exorcist of Emily Rose (2005), which I think it's a great one based on a real case in Germany. I think this is more like a horror drama than a "trying to get the audience with jump scares" movie. I hope you both skip part 2 and react to the actual sequel "Exorcist 3" (directed by the man who wrote the novel). I'm not even a horror fan, but I would say part 3 is a good movie even if you remove the horror element.

I think this is not really a horror movie, it has horrible scenes but it’s more about the loss of faith and redemption and it’s 50 years old so no CGI, you must remember when you it came out nobody had seen anything like this, it reminds me of The Godfather as in it takes it time to let us know the characters and builds tension, good reaction though you paid attention which a lot of reactors don’t

Kudos to the team who did the special effects and make up of the movie. Impressive work. Some examples: The most disturbing scenes were played by an adult actress, Eileen Dietz, of course. It would have been insane to ask a child to do such things on screen. The trick was very well done because nobody noticed and nobody notice today either. Another great example was the actor playing Merrin, Max Von Sydow. He was only 44 at the time but he really looks like an elder person. Still Linda Blair had to do a lot of hard scenes. It wasn´t an easy ride for her and despite the brilliant work she did, she never got the recognition she deserved, like an Oscar nomination.

what an honest and polite reaction. The Exorcist may not be as scary today as it was in the 70s. But it remains an honest drama, about real people who could be living in our neighborhood. Such a well-tied script. Three distinct nuclei that come together in the final act for a single purpose. Save an innocent girl from evil. The Exorcist was nominated for 10 Oscars and shocked the conservative population of the 70s because it was not afraid to take risks and break paradigms. Then watch the documentary about this film, as it is a lesson on how to write a script and make films.

There is nothing wrong with you for not being traumatized. This movie came out in 1973. There were only VERY FEW really scary horror movies before that, and they also have never shown any of these kinds of things. That is why it traumatized many people in those days. But since then shocking things, swearing, and violence has become so normal in movies that you have seen hundreds of movies with those type of things, so you have become used to it. But it says a lot that it is still more shocking and scarier than most movies today. So imagine how it was half a century ago for people.

So, when the girl's head twists around. the voice that speaks is not Regan; it is Burke the dead director. "Do you know what she did, your cunting daughter?" This is the demon taunting the mother using Burke's voice, meaning, "Did you know your fucking daughter killed me?" Also, Burke died from his head twisted all the way around, and that is what happens to Regan. Now as to WHY she didn't immediately die we'll never know, but it happened in the novel too.

The screenplay for this movie was based on the novel which itself was based on an actual exorcism performed in 1948. The subject of the exorcism was a 14-year-old boy from New Jersey. Because of family connections, the exorcism was performed in St. Louis Missouri. The details of the exorcism were documented in the notes of the priests involved, which were located in the archives of St. Louis University. The exorcism lasted several weeks, but did not actually involve any spinning heads or floating beds. Also, as a matter of interest. The character of the younger priest, father Dyer was played by father William J. O’Malley, Society of Jesus, a consultant who was brought on to the film and was later given the bit part. Father O’Malley, until his recent passing was an instructor at Fordham university preparatory school in New York.

It's not hidden, but it's also not highlighted: earlier, the man to whom Regan spoke those words was in a conversation with another guest at the party. His words in that conversation revealed that he was an astronaut, soon to go into space. (He was talking about how much room there was in an Apollo space-capsule, compared to the much smaller amount of room in the capsules of the Gemini and Mercury programs.) Regan is telling him that he'll die in space.

The rats in the attic scene was a weird one. Obviously, there was a gas line running through the attic that dislodged from a mounting bracket which made the rattling sound thinking that rats were the cause of the disturbance. Eventually, the loose bracket caused the line to vibrate enough to break a connection in the line causing a leak. When the actress entered the attic with a lit candle and got close to the gas leak caused the flare up? I love your reaction to this movie and think it was one the best directed films ever.

I saw this movie in theatres when it came out it '73.I was 12 years old at the time. There were people holding signs protesting the movie outside because of the language and graphic violence. You must understand there was nothing like this before. During the show some people got up, screamed and ran out. one guy got up and vomited right in the isle. The movie was banned in many towns across the country. Ouja borads became very unpopular after this movie. They do work. Make your own . Draw a diagram and then take a light glass. The spirits do answer questions you couldnt possibly know the answers to try it. Only be sure when done to tell the spirts in a firm voice "To Go"..we never had problems. Your young so having being exposed to other things u dont find it that scary. This movie was based on a true event but the the victim was a 14 year old boy. The Vatican has since sealed the record so no more is known. Exorcisms continue to this day. Some strange events occured during the filming. one person died and strange fires broke out. To me this is the most scary movie with ""Alien '79" being the second most.

There's 6 movies out of about 50 good horror movies, I never thought u would have the guts to do. The descent, barbarian, hereditary, the exorcist, hellraiser, drag me to hell, the ring, the grudge, lights out(watch the 2 minute short first!😮)the woman in black, the Conjuring, insidious Annabelle La llarona, Nun movies... It's all part of the Conjuring universe. The first Halloween and Friday the 13th, The Omen, Hellraiser, first evil dead trilogy, and I'll throw in 1982 The Thing, for the gore factor. But the exorcist, is THE horror movie all others are judged by!! Ironically, max was only 42 when he filmed this, he had trouble getting jobs after this because directors thought he was older! Linda did a masterpiece acting job here and should have got a lifetime Oscar. The director William Freidken kept the room at 40 degrees, fired pistols by the actors heads to scare them, and the green slime went into the young priest's mouth wasn't supposed to happen, that's why he looks so surprised! He was a cutting edge director! Max ironically not long before this, did maybe the greatest Jesus movie ever made, the greatest story ever told! He also did Conan, 3 DAYS of the Condor, minority report, and others! The moms back was permanently hurt in the scene where she's thrown down. Linda had to have round the clock security for about 8 months, because people were convinced she was possessed! She couldn't get much work after this either. The detective is a masterclass actor. Arthur Miller first saw him on stage, and said he wrote the play, death of a salesman, for him. He was in the acting masterpiece, 12 angry men! The voice actor is a woman who smoked cigs and drank whiskey every day of her life! She purposely went uncredited for this film! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actor of all time! This movie, The Thing, Alien and Bladerunner, prove beyond a doubt, that practical effects a are way better than special effects, robotics, and CGI! This also tells u, never get a Ouija board! Somehow without explanation, part of the evil figurine and the Catholic pendant made it to DC. Where they were originally buried in Iraq, I'm sure the pendant was used to keep the demon inside the figurine. But when the Ouija board came out, it released the demon!! Type in here, news footage and stories of people leaving the theater from, The Exorcist 😮😮😮

Doctors often want to see how the patient behaves when only other medical people are present, when the patient is not in the presence of possibly inhibiting family-members, when the patient is not in the presence of the one who has essentially said 'Something is wrong with you, and we're going to the doctor to see what to do about it.' It's valuable to be able to _combine_ information about how Regan behaves in the _presence_ of her mother with information about how Regan behaves in the _absence_ of her mother.

You two are still very young. Our movies were original and from a different time. Effects like these are and still amazing. I appreciate how far effects have come, but in the process of CGI, its taken away from the quality as well. To many of the same things. Movies have lost originality and creativity. Not all but some.And The ring, is a remake of the Japanese original Ringu. My mother's and grandparents generation gave us so much. And of course yours did too. All I'm saying is with all of the fancy effects, gizmos, internet and futuristic inventions, don't forget to stop and smells the flowers once in a while, read a book. Play a board game, or go to a movie theatre and watch a movie. P.S. There's nothing wrong with laughter, especially when looking death in the eye, or a horror movie. I think it's because of the age of you guys. You need to remember, when this first came out, there was NOTHING else like it. Today, we have extremely violent TV shows, films, etc. We've got kids playing computer games where they're blowing peoples heads off. As a society, we're just so desensitised

Love how you ladies became so immersed with the story and characters. Subscribed. The Exorcist is so much more than just a horror film. It is not only a masterpiece ,it’s also a suspense/drama film that depicts horrific events. It is uneasy suspense with a buildup that emotionally explodes. Its great story telling with incredible raw performances by all. It's horror/drama that is serious, relentless, and powerful. It's about doubt, faith, guilt, sacrifice, desperation, love, redemption, heartbreaking loss and science versus the human condition. A mother who has no religious beliefs, desperately seeks help from a guilt ridden priest who has lost his faith. The movie won the Oscar for best screenplay for good reasons.

Hmmm I think you 2 are missing something about the movie. If your younger sis was possessed like that in your house...could you sleep well at all? That demon knows everything about you, and will use it to mentally attack you.

I never found The Exorcist to be scary because it was so over the top. It was entertaining for its shocking scenes, but it never felt like any of it was real or possible IMO. Your head is not going to spin all the way around no matter how 'possessed' you are nor are you going to levitate. I do recall when this movie came out though that it freaked a lot of people out. Some would going around saying it was based on a true story which was never true, but it added to the fear for those that believed it. The movie spawned a bunch of magic shows where they would levitate people. Magic shows are a thing of the past now.
