Yeah, even details of decor, character naming etc are references to different Poe stories and poems. Tamerleine's episode, for instance, manages to be even better than both "Tamerlaine" and "William Wilson", the short stories Flannagan is adapting with her life and death.

The Poe references are peppered HEAVILY in each scene and reference. It’s more like all of his works as a single beast. Fall of the house of Usher is a short story without a lot of meat just more of a mood - it’s like a frame to hang all this other stuff on. I think Verna is the raven (name scramble) but even that is all guesswork right now. I also LOVE that the family are built on big pharm specifically some kind of patented opioid. Edgar Allen Poe only lived to 40 almost 200 years ago and his life and work are dripping with opium addiction. So much going on here.
@meat.popsicle Жыл бұрын
If you didn't know, the Usher family and their company Fortunato is based on the real life Sackler family and their company Purdue pharma. I followed their case a few years ago. The show really parallels what happened in the real world even to the last episode.
@NYSly Жыл бұрын
Some of the character names are also references to Poe's real life. In the first episode there's Boss Longfellow, an obvious reference to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but there's also John Neal (the judge) and Rufus Griswold (a character who I dont remember if he was mentioned this episode but shows up later), and all three were Poe's literary contemporaries and in some cases rivals. And Eliza Usher, the mother, bears the same first name as Poe's mother, who died when he was a toddler.

Not only are each Usher siblings stories an inspiration of famous Edgar Allan Poe stories but the whole series are packed full of Poe easter eggs. Madeline Usher is played by Mary McDonnell (who is definitely known for more than Independence Day 😜lol). She is a twice Oscar nominated actress most known for her roles in Dances with Wolves and TV's Battlestar Galactica. She is fantastic and a great addition to Mike Flanagan's acting troop. I binged the whole series and loved it. Hill House is still my number one. Bly Manor is number 4. I will need to rewatch to see if this or Midnight Mass ends up in my number 2 position. Roderick's mother actually *was* standing behind Dupan; however, any ambient glare on the screen would cause the viewer to miss it because the background is so dark. Thank you for your reaction. Mike Flanagan has done it again. This is a masterpiece, another in his adaptations. He has honored, truly honored Edgar Allan Poe. Some things to keep in mind while watching this episode: Roderick (Bruce Greenwood, originally Frank Langella) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) are two characters from Poe's 1839 short story, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. As in this Netflix series, they are brother and sister in the original work. A close reading of Poe's work suggests that there is something incestuous going on between the pair. A careful viewing of the series strongly vibes with this. Note how they sleep in the same bed from youth--not necessarily demanding this. But watching the series with this in mind helps viewers to better understand the dynamics between them. The Great Carl Lumbly plays Le Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin, the protagonist of three works by Poe: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841), "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" (1842), and "The Purloined Letter" (1844). The first of these works is the first detective story we know of--Poe created that genre. Without C. Auguste Dupin there would be no Sherlock Holmes from Arthur Conan Doyle and no Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie. So it's no exaggeration to say also that without Edgar Allan Poe, there is no Batman or DC (Detective Comics). The mysterious character named Verna (Carla Gugino) has an interesting name. It is an anagram referring to perhaps the most famous poem of Poe's: VERNA RAVEN

Sorry to see that Robert Longstreet got killed off so early, hope he shows up in some flashbacks. Kylie Curran, Robert Longstreet, Carl Lumbly, Henry Thomas and Bruce Greenwood were all in Dr. Sleep. I loved Hill House and Midnight, Bly not too much. I am hoping for another great one with Usher.
