It was Annabelle Lee that told Madeline that she is so small. That clearly affected Madeline a lot that she had to write it on the brick, she had to project it

I absolutely loved that it was Annabelle Lee, who Madeline saw herself as superior to, who got to her the most. I viewed her hair pieces as a part of this--Madeline always tried to appear taller, bigger, than she really was. It wasn't a "powerful man" who got one over on her, it was Annabelle Lee.

Actually Madeline was more humane than Roderick because she never had kids while Roderick decided to have 4 more kids. And there may have been others he didn’t know about but they would have died peacefully.
@MarzipanillaКүн бұрын
She was also hesitant when Verna laid the terms, and Roderick instantly accepted. She was surprised by her brother's choice. They were both messed up people, but Roderick's indifference to the consequences he put on other people is an important character choice
@FeliciaWilliams1908Күн бұрын
@ So true. I was surprised at him taking the deal so fast.
@Devlin_DraconisКүн бұрын
A realization I just had when it came up in the post episode conversation, I think this is why Madeline hates the basterd kids. Because she is subconsciously disgusted that Rodrick was indiscriminately producing more victims. The two kids were supposed to be the only ones who were going to live a gilded life, but all the ones after were not accounted for, and it really makes Rodrick much more callous.
@FeliciaWilliams1908Күн бұрын
@ great point. That makes so much sense.
@TheBlueDragon15Күн бұрын
Personally I didn't see it as that. Verna said that since they came into this world together they would die together, but Madeline kept deflecting. She kept saying "I don't wanna have kids" and "having kids is Rodericks thing not mine" and I think Madeline believed that she could be exempt since she had no desire ever to have kids. I think thats why she tried to get Roderick to take his own life because she thought that would be the end, that the deal would end with just his death and not hers too. Personally I don't think she was more humane, I just think Roderick was more ignorant and cruel by having sex with any pretty woman who walks by.

On the "AI Lenore kind of fell flat for me" reaction: I think it was meant as a preview for the next "people were going to do it anyway, so why shouldn't we be the one to give it to them and gain from it" type of evil that the Usher's had made their opioid drug empire from. Madeline made her proposition to rebrand the drug company as a TECH company because that's just considered as the next wave coming by the population in general. Ransomware, cybersecurity, stock control algo rhythms, designer AI "companions" .. it's just the next horror story waiting to be told sort of comment from the show (had the Usher's survived). I know a lot of people have pointed out that Eric would appreciate M Flannagan's general body of work and I agree. I've had long conversations with religious friends about Midnight Mass and think he would appreciate a lot of things in it. It's without a doubt the best representation I've ever seen of the benefits of shared religion for a society (as discussed in a lot of anthropology and psych courses- before the need for it tapered out historically). It gets to the horror of course but for a time you see how people can do the work of healing one another on their own and what community support is really capable of (when uncorrupted). They have some HARD conversations and do an amazing amount of psychological repair while progressing through the story. One of the most gut-wrenching points of MM is that the miracles/deity factor was never necessary and that they could have healed their wounds on their own if they'd wanted to.

17:35 The song playing in the background in this scene is called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot and it's about a ship that sank on Lake Superior during a storm, killing the whole crew. I grew up hearing this song when my dad would play his music so i recognized it immediately, but everything in this show is so intentional i've been wondering why this song specifically was chosen. Perhaps it's suggesting that the "force of nature" that took down the ship was actually Verna collecting what she's owed. Or maybe it's prophetic and meant to parallel Rodrick and Madeline dooming their whole bloodline to one singular fate. Either way the song and its lyrics are so haunting and eerie that it fits the vibe of the show perfectly.

Lenore's death was the most peaceful. She just...stopped.
@moramorandobianchi7093Күн бұрын
I was still holding on hope, even when Verna appeared on her room. Since Verna started telling a story about her mom, I was hoping she’d say something like: your mother was a single mother with a kid, and your father took you both and adopted you. (Which would still make Lenore an Usher, but at least maybe that would be a loophole around “bloodline”). But yeah, she had to die to make the story more tragically beautiful, as much as it pains me (and that scene still makes me cry), I’d have it no other way
@carriesmith742Күн бұрын
@moramorandobianchi7093 you are not alone. I cry at that every time as well, but mostly because living in the US, where the business of Healthcare rules all, I know that would never happen, which makes it all the more tragic!

A breakdown of the Poe references/adaptions, to the best of my ability and memory: Roderick is based on Roderick Usher from "The Fall of the House of Usher", Montresor from "The Cask of Amontillado" and the unnamed narrators from "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee". And maybe loosely on William Legrand from "The Gold-Bug". Annabel Lee (Roderick's first wife) is based on, well.. Annabel Lee from "Annabel Lee". Juno is loosely based on Jupiter from "The Gold-Bug". Madeline is based on Madeline Usher from "The Fall of the House of Usher", also on Montresor from "The Cask of Amontillado" and very loosely on the narrator of "Some Words with a Mummy". Auguste Dupin is based on C. Auguste Dupin from several of Poe's detective stories, including "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", and on the unnamed narrator of the "The Fall of the House of Usher". Rufus Griswold is based on Fortunato from "The Cask of Amontillado". Arthur Pym is based on "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". Prospero/Perry is based on "The Masque of the Red Death"- Camille is based on Camille L'Espanaye and her mother from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and probably loosely on the King from "Hop-Frog". Toby and Beth/Tina are probably loosely based on Hop-Frog and Trippetta from "Hop-Frog". Napoleon/Leo is based on "The Black Cat" and very loosely on Napoleon Buonaparte Froissart from "The Spectacles". (Julius is probably named after "The Journal of Julius Rodman", although I don't think he is very based on that story, except maybe in a very loose thematic sense.) Victorine is based on "The Tell-Tale Heart", the unamed sailor from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and very loosely on Monsieur Renelle and Julien Bossuet from "The Primature Burial", the husband and former lover respectively of the Victorine LaFourcade of that story, with Ali taking the Victorine role in the relationship dynamic. (Ali herself is named after Alessanda from "Politian"). Tamerlane/Tammy (despite her episode and company being named after "The Gold-Bug") is based on the titular characters of "William Wilson" (her plot) and "Tamerlane" (her relationship with Bill). Bill is named after William Wilson, but as I said, Tammy is the one who is based on him. Frederick is based on "The Pit and the Pendelum", the husband from "Morella" and Fredrick from "Metzengerstein". Morella is based on Morella, from, well, "Morella" and actually takes the narrative role of the protagonist from "The Pit and the Pendelum", while Frederick takes the role of the Spanish Inquisition. Leonore is based on Lenore from "The Raven", the daughter from "Morella" and takes the role of the French Army from "The Pit and the Pendelum". Verna is based on the Raven from "The Raven", Death from "The City in the Sea" and the shrouded figure at the end of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", and to various extent takes the roles of the Red Death from "Masque of the Red Death", the 'ourang-outang' from "The Muders in the Rue Morgue", the replacement Pluto from "The Black Cat", the old man from "The Tell-Tale Heart" and William Willson's doppelgänger from "William Willson".

As regards whether or not the raven was a demon or just Roderick's disease, it's important to remember that everything we see in the show is a retelling from Roderick. And because of his disease he might not be a reliable narrator. That's kind of the brilliance behind a lot of the Netflix Flanagan series. There's always an out in the background (narratively speaking) to explain the horror.
@TadvocateКүн бұрын
Given that Rodrick's entire family was sick I think the only real proof that we have that Verna was real was Augustine seeing her at the very end. Because though Arthur was shown to have interacted with her it was still told through the perspective of Roderick's story.
