Frank: "A man who knows to pair rabbit with a Beaujolais." (I've noticed you're gay. Will you admit it?) Bill: misses the subtext "I know I don't seem like the type." (I know I seem too manly to have stereotypically gay traits) Frank: holds eye contact "No, you do." (No, I'm saying I can totally tell you're gay) Bill: looks scared and scurries to the other end of the table. got the subtext that time Frank: "Fur Elise. Tales of Hoffman. Yuck. These aren't yours. Ah ha! This is you. Oh, my god. It's my favorite." (I'm gay too and look we have a common interest!) Bill: sings a sad song about unrequited love that will never go away (I realized a long time ago that being gay means being alone forever) Frank: "So who's the girl? The girl you're singing about." (Will you trust me and admit it now?) Bill: "There is no girl." (I'll trust you a little) Frank: "I know." (You're safe with me) Bill would have grown up in the 60s/70s and probably in that rural small town, likely in a conservative christian family and neighborhood. Social change stopped for him at 2003. He was terrified of Frank. I was suspicious of Frank too. To queer folks, the coded conversation was super obvious - we still do this now in 2023. But we don't trust writers/executives to be comfortable with gays just being gay, so I expected it to be a red herring. I thought Frank would turn out to be yet another gay predator, trying to use Bill or steal his resources. Or to only be playing gay to lure Bill into a false sense of security. Even Frank looking at Bill like he wanted to give him a hug - while he was singing about being lonely - didn't fully reassure me. Up until the '3 years later', I still thought Frank might just feel bad because he intended to screw Bill over.

YES YES YES. This is exactly how I saw the conversation as well. It still hit me that much more emotionally because of it. I knew exactly what they were doing and feeling.

At the time, there was an Anti-Gay marriage law in place in the state. Gay marriage wasn't legal in Massachusetts until May 17th 2004. Even the State Supreme Court didn't rule in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health until NOV 18th of 2003. Outbreak was in Sept...

Best commentary I’ve seen re: subtext after like 35 reaction videos. I’m bi, and picked up on the subtext during the early side of dinner. I’m always surprised when folks miss it, as it’s fairly obvious to me. Thanks for your breakdown.

I enjoyed and appreciated your reaction and commentary. I was a bit disappointed that you weren't sadder but then you lost it when Bill did. There's no embarrassment to be had in bawling your eyes out over almost every ep of this show. I'll go further & say I'd be sus of anyone who DOESN'T shed tears over it. I've watched quite a few reactions to the series & I've come to see it as a cathartic experience, the fierce feelings we all feel almost providing a cleansing for our souls. when you've gone through it a bunch of times & had variations on that same reaction each time, see if you don't agree.

Think back through the first ep. Sarah was going to make pancakes except Joel forgot to get mix, Joel was going to get a birthday cake but forgot it, the old lady's biscuits, their neighbor making oatmeal cookies instead of chocolate chip ones that Sarah liked. They dodged death a bunch of times that day without knowing it.

This is Bill and Frank and they changed there whole story. Don't worry about crying other reactors have cried at this scene and one has cried worst then you. And remember the show is based off a game.

This is one of the best changes they have made from the game IMO. Telling a story like this wouldn't have really fit into the game, because of how you'd have to tell it from the perspective of Joel and Ellie exclusively, so I get why they didn't have something like this in the game, but this version of Bill and Frank is much better to me.

19:34 put your self in Franks(this is to anyone in the comments as well as Mandy of course), in this world after having some kind of life and with another person as well, probably feels like a pretty good run. As someone who is severely disabled and ill, and has a friend in the same situation(met because of our disability). I have talked to some of my family about "calling it" and this friend I have has actually decided to via the healthcare system. For me I have talked about it because every day being in a lot of pain and so many things are a struggle having lived a little more than double my life expectancy I feel like I've had a good run, but I have the odd better day here and there and so I haven't gotten to that point. But I totally get it, so I understand my friend that has gotten to that point. And nobody can say anything to us other than words of understanding. I think a big part for me is I have accepted what my life is and know that the hospital is a second home, so I just go one day at a time and if something happens just go with it and deal with it and once that is solved and something else happens deal with that and so on, the stuff that is hard is knowing when something is out of your control and accepting that and to just put what ever energy you do have into what you can control. Not sure what Frank has but it was something that even in the good days doctors couldn't fix it, so from Franks point of view is to suffer every day or most days and from Bills point of view it would be to watch the person you love suffer, so yes it is sad but if you take a moment the choice is clear. For me being told you have cancer and the only way to get rid of it is to remove it and what it's growing on and that doing so will change your day to day and some other things as well, choice was clear yes my day to day and other things does suck but having other things in my life already affecting me since birth these would just be the next thing, my control was just the decision and that's a pretty easy choice, get rid of the cancer or die to it eventually... I had that choice many in our world don't and for Frank in his world he doesn't seem to, so choice is eventually die or "call it". Doesn't make it any less sad.

Pretty much the only happy ending this season 😅❤ Bill was a gruff, introverted libertarian doomsday prepper (or survivalist) who lived in his mom’s basement which he turned into a bunker and he fell in love with probably the nicest, warmest, most extroverted liberal flower child in the post apocalypse. Opposites attract indeed! ❤ I enjoyed this love story far more than what happened with their relationship in the game. I think the writer may have felt bad about it and decided to “fix” it in the show. Excellent choice! Thanks for your reactions! Also did you notice Joel is wearing one of Frank’s shirts at the end of this one? Looks good on him! 😊

I think the end of the Bill's letter invites them to. We can't make it all out but it looks like he said, "If you and she decide you're...recommend pairing..." I think Bill wanted Joel to find love with Tess the way he did with Frank.

Frank has Parkinson’s. My dad had it and it’s a slow painful dissolve till you can’t function. Frank can’t do it himself. There’s no one else to ask for help. It’s a cry for help.

Frank had ALS. Neuro-muscular degeneration which would eventually render him unable to even eat or drink.
