I’ve a great great-uncle who was stationed in the Philippines at the start of the WWII. He ended up being captured on the Bataan Peninsula; surviving the subsequent Bataan Death March. After the march, he was put onto a ship bound for the home islands, and was forced into slavery in a salt mine.

Hey brother, when I was a boy in the corps I volunteered for a run for the baatan death March and met old men. I asked all of their ranks. They hated me for calling em Sargent or corporal. I later learned they were looking for guys who conducted good conduct and stuff like that. I got a few letters of recommendation from these gentlemen.

My father was one of those men out past the main line of resistance. I overheard the story of The Tenaru, in the 1970s. Years later I watched this and it played out exactly as he told the story years before.

14:03 machine gunners were typically issued special asbestos gloves that when worn, wouldn’t burn the user if they had to move the gun after it had been fired. However, Basilone’s glove went missing. Earlier you see him put it down, but when he tries to grab it, it’s gone. The weapon he’s using, the Browning M1917 water cooled machine gun, was used extensively in WWII. The lighter air cooled M1919A4 did have carry handles on them and you’ll see them used later on in the series.

As a US Sailor, the Son of a Sailor who served as a Pharmacist Mate (an Army equivalent of a Medic) in WWII and was in the Battle of Okinawa, I want to thank you for watching The Pacific. I want to suggest you watch all the series with the Historical facts, interviews with the actual Marines from the series and the introductions by Tom Hanks, instead of the just going into the movie. I also suggest after watching the whole series to watch the extra called "Profiles in the Pacific". I hope you also watched the extra facts and intrerviews from Band of Brothers called "We Stand Alone Together".

I think it's amazing you are still able to have such a measured perspective despite the different setting and tone of The Pacific vs Band of Brothers. I don't think it's fair to compare them to each other too much, each one was a very important story and events in history, and should be shown the respect that they each deserve for what each of these groups of men went through. You've once again shown how mature you are in your appropriate grasp of the importance for this important part of history to be learned, so we can avoid it in the future. You're doing great Amy, really appreciate your calm nature with these reactions, it's very much unique to you.

@@amylorraine3776 i can only speak for myself, but it’s an enjoyable experience for me the viewer to tag along with you on your journey through the story. The enjoyment compounds because your reactions are genuine and aren’t attempts to manipulate the audience with exaggerated emotions-authenticity is a positive trait in an attention-driven environment and I have a talent for spotting authenticity 😂 I have no personal experience with those that survived the war, but time and time again I read comments from veterans that mention their struggles are alleviated when they see a genuine effort from reactors to learn and experience these stories, even through these TV-series. It warms my heart that such a simple thing brings them some measure of peace after their traumas. As an introverted intuitive personality type, writing thoughts are one of my few outlets of expression, and even if you don’t reply I’ll still intuit some of your thoughts and feelings from your reactions. I have my Grandpa's Japanese Arisaka rifle here in my room that he brought back from the War. I can only imagine the horror stories it could tell. And the blood that was shed with it.

@@amylorraine3776 Creepy for sure. My one Grandpa was a Bomber pilot and the other was a Marine in the Pacific. I have never seen this series until now which kind of seems wrong.

I have a war bringback Arisaka as well, even came with the original sling. Probably the one with the darkest backstory is the one Ian McCollum of ForgottenWeapons owns. The one he owns was also a vet bringback, but the stock is all charred and damaged. This is because the guy holding it was hit by a flamethrower and you can even see where his hands were when he got hit by the flame.

FYI. The scene with the rice and maggots? That's actually taught in survival school. A pound of meat will generate maggots for a long time, giving you sustenance for many days after the meat would have been consumed. Granted, it's disgusting and gross. But, you will survive eating it. Also, love your series. It really is fascinating to see your unfiltered reactions to The Pacific. I wish more people would get this experience and understanding.

@@amylorraine3776 also, my bad. I just rewatched that episode. They were given rice, not meat. But, as we saw during the mess hall scene on Guadalcanal, maggots grow in cooked rice, too (ie., "Think of it as protein."). Survival school uses meat (or used to...I assume they still do.) Still disgusting and gross. But, the point is your survival, not your comfort. Cheers!

1st Marines were on the island for 3 months, and they go a break. It took 3 more months of fighting before the Japanese gave up. A lot more ships and planes were lost. Marines fight on land, sea and air. They are attacked from the land, sea and air.

Pay attention to Dr Sledge’s words about men having their souls torn out. This serves as the theme for the whole series. These men were asked to go into hell over and over. We will see some with damage to their bodies, others will have real damage to their souls.
