The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

4:00 "I can't tell if these are Vikings or Celts or something else." Probably something else. A band of lose Germanic tribes, gathered together under one war-chief to repel the Romans from Germania. Vikings would not exist for another 600 years or so. Celts existed in Germania as early as around 1,000 BCE (1200 years before this battle) but from around 700 BCE through 100 BCE other tribes from Scandinavia started replacing them and chasing them southwest into France, so there weren't likely to be many Celts in Germania in 180 CE (the year of this battle, 3 centuries after the last Celts left the aiea), but likely many of these men descended from Celtic ancestors.

34:25 "They don't stand a chance." That was the idea. This is a reenactment of a real battle. The chariots are the conquering Roman army and Maxums and his friends are the Carthaginians who got massacred in the real battle. It was supposed to be impossible for the "Carthaginians" to win here in the Colosseum since they did not win in the historical battle.

In the original script, Proximo had a big fight scene with the Praetorians when they raided the gladiator barracks and survived until the end of the film. Sadly this had to be cut because of Oliver Reed's sudden death before filming was complete. The producers had a $25 million insurance clause that would have allowed them to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor but the cast and crew were already exhausted from the hectic filming schedule through the very hot Summer of 1999 in Malta so it was decided to superimpose Reed's face onto another actor for Proximo's final scenes at the gladiator barracks.

A bit of military tactics: did you notice which way the men on horses (cavalry) were heading? Guess where they wound up and which way they charged. The attacked body of men were Germanic (perhaps Teutons), but not Celts nor Vikings.

@ronweber140224 күн бұрын
There is basically nothing historically accurate in this movie. It is entertainment and are you not entertained but it is not history. Commodus fought in the ring but didn't die there. Roman battles weren't fought like that and gladiator games were nothing like portrayed. Number one gladiators didn't fight animals that was done by bestiari and they didn't fight willy nilly they had specific styles and they fought specific adversaries. For instance a murmillo or fish man would be paired up against a retiarius the net man. Matches didn't always end in the death of one of the combatants and often didn't as the host had to pay for any dead gladiators so they would fight until there was a clear winner. If one of the combatants accidentally got severely injured they might have been dispatched as a mercy killing or if the combatant put up a poor show he might be killed for not being entertaining.

the tough dude was chained together with the (soft) guy who pissed himself... the tough guy actually jerked the chain intentionally, killing the "soft" dude, and then cut off his hand to release him from the chains, which is why he is flailing around the chains afterwards.. I've always found it a bit funny, that this beast mode alpha dude is basically "b***h-slapping other dudes, with his hand still in chains... xD

The gladiator fights in Roman times is like our football, NASCAR, or heck, who doesn't HONESTLY look when passing a car accident. We are human, born with sin. We are by nature, violent. I say this as a Christian with my Seminary degree in Biblical studies. If the Old testament were made into a movie, it would be NC-17 due to the violence. The band Tool sums it up well in the song Vicarious

Gladiator movies, including this one, does portray the gladiatorial fights in an incorrect way. Certainly for TV it is more dramatic and more at stake when its a fight to the death. However the gladiator fights were very rarely to the death. They were a lot more akin to modern wrestling matches where the purpose is to put on a show and entertainment moreso than cruel fight to the death. Of course, deaths could and would happen, as well as injuries, but that was not their primary purpose. All to say, a past gladiator who knew the sport and games would likely have no hesitation in starting his own gladiator school or crew if he had the money for it.

One thing they get wrong is Rome never took Germania,the Germanic tribes beat the Romans at teutoburg Forrest
@user-xo9pz7fd3j6 күн бұрын
Check Germanicus on Google, he put Germany to fire and sword, defeated Arminius (who was a Roman general) in two battles, recovered the eagles of the Teutoburg legions and reached the Elbe and perhaps beyond. The Emperor Tiberius decided that Germany was of no use and recalled Germanicus and his Legions to this side of the Rhine, which was the natural border of the empire. So it will remain for the next three centuries. Google "Germanicus*, read and study before posting barbarian 😏😂

Allowing Lucius to overhear any of their talk on Maximus was a massive mistake and they should have at the very least warned him not to mention anything to his uncle. Children, like servants, hear everything but fade into the background and become invisible to the powerful.

t is truly disheartening to witness someone so disconnected from a masterpiece that resonates deeply with so many. Your insensitivity is not just disappointing; it reflects a troubling inability to appreciate the depth and artistry of such an iconic film. I find it embarrassing to know that there are individuals who can watch Gladiator without feeling anything at all. This is a film that demands emotional engagement, and your complete lack of response is a stark reminder of how some people can be so inept when it comes to recognizing true art. I hope you take this critique to heart and reconsider your approach to films that have touched the lives of countless others

Sorry, you feel that way. I find it more embarrassing that your whole judgement comes from me not being O.T.T. while watching a beautiful film. You speak so passionately about a movie yet can be so insensitive and rude because my reaction didn't fit into your mold. It's disheartening and a stark reminder that not everyone is accepting of the different nuances of emotions and how they're expressed. And no, I will not reconsider my approach, as I am unapologetically me, and my reactions will stay true to who I am. 😁😉

This is probably a more genuine reaction than a lot of "reactors" where I feel like most of them emotionally amp it up for the camera vs. if they were just watching a movie alone and not filming themselves for social media. In either case, people are different, not everybody is going to react the same to everything - that's life, it's not anybody's obligation to respond to everything in a certain way.
