I've always thought Charmaine's main reason for telling Carmella about her & Tony was simply to hurt her [Carmella] for the way she treated her [Charmaine] as a servant and the probably hundreds of little ways Carmella has done things like that other the years. Telling someone, "I had your spouse and they weren't good enough for me." is a huge burn. 🤣

Charmaines reason for telling Carmella about her and Tony is because of the way Carmella was treating her like a servant, being above her. It was saying "You aren't better than me, I could have been in your place". For a regular person it would be like having someone in management talking down to you or trying to make you feel that you don't know how to do the job, and revealing to them "actually I was offered the position that you have and I turned it down, then they gave you the job instead".

I agree with your comments. I also just noticed something about this episode that I didn't notice before, when you said that it shows the cracks in the relationship between the couples (Charmaine vs Carmela and Tony vs Artie). I realized that this episode shows side to side how men tend to deal with conflicts like that in male relationships vs how women deal with conflicts in female relationships. Tony got angry and (overtly) snapped at Artie, then Artie snapped back and they ended up having an explicit "fight". They made fun of each other and laughed together, and afterwards, even though the underlying problem wasn't exactly solved, they weren't angry with each other anymore. In contrast, Carmela and Charmaine didn't really have an overt fight, but they used veiled attacks instead (or to be more accurate Carmela was disrespectful towards Charmaine, and Charmaine as a response attacked her in a subtle way to get back at her), and at the end they both left feeling more antipathy towards each other than they felt before.

You catch on to all the details very quickly, that's cool! Yes, Chris thinks the russians are friends of Tony's goomar (side girl) because of the speed, but it was just Junior giving him a "talking to"

I could be totally wrong and I probably am, but I always took the scene of Charmaine talking about sleeping with Tony as a way to knock Carmella off her high horse a little bit because she didn't like being treated like the help. They made a point of showing Carmella wave the housekeeper over to her and then showed her do the same to Charmaine. I think she just wanted to get back at Carmella a little.

The comedy always stays in the show. The comedy is unmatched, even something as subtle as the mob guys genuinely mispronouncing common words, for example “Hannibal Lecture” lol

If you want to get a deeper meaning of the episode... read the lyrics to the ending song “All Through the Night”. David Chase is constantly using song lyrics to help tell the story. Song lyrics are often actually part of the script. You discovered how perfect the Soprano theme song is. Just know that HBO gave David Chase a huge budget for this show. Chase spent a TON of it just on music rights for episodes. Songs were chosen specifically for their lyrics & the links their meaning had to help tell the Soprano story. The only music rights he couldn’t afford to buy were songs by the Beatles but every other song in music history was available to him.

Carmela was being condescending even before, about the house. I think Charmaine could tell she was being pittied. Then being treated like a servant at the party was the last straw. So yes, she decided to set the record straight: I could have had your life and I didn't want it. So stop acting all superior.

Watching your reactions to The Sopranos is going to be fun because you really get this show already. Do you think it would be as successful as it was 20 years ago if it came out now?
@CristyReacts
@CristyReacts 11 ай бұрын
Oh great question. Well, the television landscape has definitely changed a lot with streaming services and binge-watching habits. But honestly, I don't think that would hurt the success of the show. I mean, it has such incredible storytelling and super interesting characters. I feel like it would grab people's attention no matter when it's released. What do you think?
@gilbertallard306

@@CristyReacts I think the show would work even today. Some cultural references might be lost on younger viewers, though. Tony himself is fond of the 50’s and the 60’s. For example, he complains to Dr Melfi that men like Gary Cooper are not around anymore. But in the end, a show is good if you care about the characters. And these characters are timeless.

So about Arties wife. It always seemed to me that she has always been resentful about Tony choosing Carmella over her, and the fact that her husband idolize him just makes it even worse. As far as Tony cheating well, this is the mob. Pretty much all of them have a side piece, and all the wives know it and accept it for the most part. It kinda comes with the territory. I'm not condoning it either because I hate cheaters, but it's just a reality in the mob world

@hurley31 11 ай бұрын
She is not resentful about Tony at all. She loathes him and his lifestyle. She spells it out very clearly - she looks down on THEM, not the other way around. Carmella has the money, she has the moral high ground.
