First Time Watching The Sopranos | S1E1 Reaction!

This is the OG antihero/bad man tv show. It kicked off the whole “prestige tv” era. Without it there’s no Don Draper, Walter white etc. occasionally some of it can seem dated but just remember the time it premiered. Overall it’s landmark tv that everyone should watch. Unforgettable characters and impeccable writing. Not to mention how funny it is. Enjoy!!!!

Oz actually kicked it off there was no sopranos if Oz had not been successful.

@@Cream-2128 I love Oz and it did come first but it was never close to having the cultural cache as the sopranos. It was limited in what it could do. Tony directly influenced dozens of leading men. I do agree tho that without it hbo never would’ve grown into what it did. Very important pioneering show.

James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano really elevated the game in terms of acting on TV. He brough is A game every time, and it was so good, his performance as Tony Sopranos is the reason that A-list movie stars started doing roles on prestige tv dramas. He elevated the game so much.

Damn im so glad more people is starting to react to this. In my opinion, best show ever written by far. I've seen the six seasons something like four times already. Yeah, the creator of Breaking Bad himself said that there would be no Walter White without Tony Soprano.

Nah not even close. Barry, Peaky Blinders, Mr. Robot, Better Call Saul, House Of The Dragon, Atlanta, Orange Is The New Black(First five seasons anyway), Boardwalk Empire, The Last Of Us etc. Thats not even considering animated TV either, which is at its peak currently. @@ZChoate

The ducks and the church are both ways Tony is idealizing an innocent view of family (ducks) and work (the church) in his mind. This is in stark contrast to the brutal reality of his mother and uncle plotting against him, and the real “work” Tony does.

This isn’t really a spoiler but by the time 9/11 happened they cut the clip of the towers from the opening theme. I honestly didn’t notice it until season 4 and kept thinking I missed the part that showed them every single episode 😂

The church was about the immigrant experience, and life being more comfortable for children. Parents/grandparents come to America with nothing, and with their own hands build something lasting and meaningful for the community, and then moving down the generations people get more comfortable and wealthier and they appreciate such things less. It's about a change in values as generations become more affluent.

The rest of season one was done only after HBO picked up the show, and it was a long time between the pilot and ep 2. There was also a hiatus after they finished filming the whole season, until it became a hit, when they started on season 2. The more confident they were with success, the better and better the shows got. Also, if you've seen Goodfellas, how did you miss "Spider" as part of Tony's crew?

Specifically, its because Tony Soprano paved the way for "bad guys" to be popular protegonists. Vince Gilligan's exact words in reference to Walter White were "There'd be no Walter White without Tony Soprano!" Or something to that effect.

I'm very glad you guys are reacting to The Sopranos. Way back in1999 I didn't have cable or internet so I had to wait until I could rent it on VHS at the local video store. HBO invented prestige televison with this show and they've showed their commitment to quality programming since with Sex And The City, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and Barry and Succession. I haven't watched the entirety of the series, but I'm happy to rewatch it with you guys.

I'll be the anoying commentator and give the quick history lesson. TV always had blips of dramas being seen as cinema on TV. Uusually these were mini series like ROOTS and WINDS OF WAR. Dramas and sitcoms were all designed to be shows you could start at any episode and enjoy. Twin Peaks starts to. change that show was about an ongoing mystery and every episode revealed new strange details. When HBO started they mostly showed movies and gradually built a small stapple or original TV known for showing more nudity, more violence and being more origanl then others shows at the time. THE SOPRANOS was basically the first of their shows to not be just a bonus to buying the cable package but be the attraction. A show with great acting, writing and more original and morally grey characters then what TV had at that point and was winning awards as it did so. People kept hearing about it so wanted HBO for the one show not just the movies. Think of it like how HOUSE OF CARDS and ORANGE IS THE KNEW BLACK were early Netflix hits but STRANGER THINGS was there massive cultural phenomenon

Sopranos definitely contributed to raising the bar for prestige television, but it wouldn’t have happened without ‘Twin Peaks’ from the early 90’s that the Sopranos creator was influenced by.

1:53 I’ll slightly correct you. It was actually the opposite. Usually TV dramas had to be soapy and epic. The production values were high like Dynasty, Miami Vice, NYPD Blue. But the Sopranos really focused on characters rather than some epic story. There are “slice of life” episodes that show how everyday situations or family add stress and complications to us all. The schtick was those complications are for a father, who’s also a mob boss. This show is closely related to the 90s comedy ‘Analyze This’ with Robert DiNero.

The Sopranos was the VERY first show of the latest Golden Era of TV (ST: TNG started the previous one). It ended with the wokefication that started about 6 years ago and we haven't had another.

This is the greatest. Still the greatest hands down. It's just one of those things. Many newer things are better than older things in all sorts of areas of society, and we progress, but sometimes older things are legendary for a reason and sometimes they are just better. And The Sopranos is one of those things. It's high art, comparable with Shakespeare or Dickens or whatever art you prefer from the past. And it's also incredible enjoyable to watch. It's not hard work at all.
