Man, the ending to this is so much creepier than T2. Don’t get me wrong, T2 is an amazing movie and pretty much the perfect sequel. But in this one, seeing the actual machine relentlessly chasing Sarah is so well done. Catches on fire, but his steel frame and CPU chip are fine and he keeps coming. Then gets blown in half but his CPU is still not destroyed so he keeps coming. It’s just so well done.

The Terminator cycles through possible responses and comes up with "Fuck you, asshole", which is a nod to the scene where the T-800 (the exact model of The Terminator, also referred to in the movie by Reese as Cyberdyne Systems model 101) first arrived and encountered/slaughtered that gang of thugs led by Bill Paxton.

Fun fact: Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 was the designation of the infiltrator/terminator cyborg program, combined biological and technological constructed being, and T-800 is the designation of the hyper alloy combat android that’s inside the flesh, that is also used as android soldiers without the flesh. Sometimes the actual flesh and metal combined cyborg gets referred to as a T-800, referring to his endoskeleton model/series iteration, but all of the iterations of the infiltrator/terminator fall under the program CSM-101. Early models, like the 600 series, had bulky endoskeletons with inferior alloys, and rubber skin that were not convincing. The 800 series was a big breakthrough, featuring real living flesh, and a lighter stronger alloy endoskeleton. Of course the 1000 series was the big breakthrough with polymimetics.

@@TnDMultiverse Just to clarify a little bit, because it's easily overlooked: The opening states that by 2029 the war between humans and machines had been going on for decades. The nuclear war that was started by the machines was only the beginning. And that first nuclear strike would come "in a few years from now" as Kyle Reese explained to Sarah Connor. Keep in mind that Terminator was made in 1984 when the Cold War was still ongoing and threat of nuclear war was high up in people's minds. That is "the storm coming in" that Sarah Connor references with her final line "I know". From her perspective at the end of this movie nothing has changed: Nuclear fire will come, the machines will attempt to eradicate humans and only decades later humans will be lead to victory by John Connor. - Terminator 2 however was made after the Cold War had ended, so ... ;-)

Except for the very first theatrical release of The Terminator. all subsequent releases, in the end credits. have a line crediting the work of Harlan Ellison. Ellison (died 2018) was a irascible, sometimes infamous writer, including of several television scripts. He wrote the original script for Star Trek's (Original Series) "City on the Edge of Forever" , which won that years World Science Fiction Hugo Award for best screenplay. Before Star Trek, Harlan had wrote a couple of time travel scripts for an earlier series, The Outer Limits. "Demon with a Glass Hand" was the one most directly influential on Cameron's first Terminator script. Copies of the Terminator script circulated around LA, and Harlan heard about the similarities. Harlan called up Cameron and (supposedly) politely asked for a simple credit of acknowledgment, and no money. James Cameron blew off Harlan Ellison. Big mistake... Harlan was as free in filing lawsuits as any Scientologist. The short of it, in an out-of-court settlement, Harlan got $70K (a token, really, considering it was a box office hit) and those subsequent release credits. If you ever get the chance, ask James Cameron what he thinks about Harlan Ellison...

I agree entirely about the music. I'll just put on my music major hat on for a tick. The real genius about this soundtrack is about time. Understand that most Western music divides time into beats per measure, typically 2, 3, or 4 beats, which is most consonant with human psychology. Threee beats to a measure defines a waltz, for example. There is also a neurological theory these days that the human brain finds time division of a non-trivial prime number per measure inherently disturbing. So if you carefully count the beats in the "chase" music here you will find that the metrical division used here is thirteen fast beats per measure.

Apart from time travel and the AI war, this movie isn't really sci-fi anymore. T1 is my favourite as the sequels become increasingly comedic and absurd and lose the straight horror of T1 (T1 is a sci-fi horror movie IMO, though less science "fiction" these days given most of the tech now exists.) T2 is OK, but it's more of a popcorn action flick than horror flick.
