I flubbed some character names in this video (per usual). AND totally didn't catch on to the opening epigraphs - which I talked over here - until episodes 2 & 3. So, …when it’s not your turn. - McNulty. Forgive me.

This is not the beginning or the early days of a golden era, this was already the peak. a show that measures up to the wire has not been written yet. every season adds another layer until you have a full picture of the corruption and flaws that run through all the systems that make up Baltimore.

Twenty years later still the best television series ever made. As a guy who worked drugs as a local cop (St Louis) for the better part of ten years and then for another twenty-two as a DEA Agent in San Francisco, Sacramento, the US Embassy in France, and Richmond, VA, I swear this is the most accurate television show ever made about street level (and slightly above) wiretap investigations ever made. It hits the nail on the head, especially when working for a PD that is underfunded and doesn't want to see things through to the end. So much truth in this series about so many issues related to drug enforcement.

Was it still called the sl@ve patrol back then, or had they already started using the more generic "law enforcement" marketing language by then?
@timothyhedrick52959 ай бұрын
@@MarcillaSmith Wow... Well since half my patrol squad was African-American, my direct Sergeant was African-American (Charles Adams, who later became Chief of the University City PD for about twenty years - you can Google him), and my dear friend, squad mate in both patrol and the detective bureau, a groomsman in my 1997 wedding was African-American (Tyrone Thompson, who later became the Chief of the Pagedale Police Department and was shot and killed in a off-duty street robbery in North SL County in 2010 - you can Google his murder as well. His 27 year old son, Tyrell, was killed a few years later during a random street robbery in the Central West End of St. Louis), and because about half my narcotics unit at SLMPD was African-American as well...., no... we didn't really use that term much and instead just chose to stick with "law enforcement." Surprisingly, we didn't even have to vote on it. But thanks for the horribly poisonous, hostile and random comment to someone you've never met and don't know. The anonymity of the Internet really brings out the best in some people. Have a great day. 🙄
@MarcillaSmith9 ай бұрын
@@timothyhedrick5295 Ok, so if I understand what you've said correctly, you're saying that switching to the term "law enforcement" was an enticement to recruit from the African American community. Were the officers who are African American used to overpolice white communities, or were they also used to disproportionately arrest people who are African American and/or from other marginalized communities, similar to how officers of other races are used to disproportionately arrest people who are African American and/or from other marginalized communities?

I always find it amusing when reactors name-check actors in The Wire as characters they played in series/movies (for the most part) that they acted in after The Wire. For me, that's not Michael B. Jordan, that's Wallace. And if you watch the whole series, the fact that kids are often featured is, well, central...

Amazing with a new reactor for this series! Let's gooooo. I love how they set up the jadedness of everyone early on too. "Teach you to give a fuck when it's not your turn to give a fuck". Standing over a dead man in a vacant. Like it's just an insect or inanimate object.

So the little flashback at the end with Gant was only included because HBO insisted. David Simon didnt want to hold the viewers hands but had to submit on this occasion. He didnt do it again. Also, the reason that this show is so realistic is because, firstly, lots of the characters throughout the show are based on real people and secondly, a lot of the storylines are based on actual events. Some of these people actually appear in the show, some even playing themselves. David simon spent a year shadowing the Baltimore homicide unit as a reporter for the Baltimore sun. Ed Burns was a cop and later a teacher. He used a wire in a big investigation back in the day. So it's all very well researched stuff. Another thing that makes it so good is that Simon used crime novelists on the writing team. George pelecanos, Richard Price and Denis Lehane. Youre going to love this if you're a fan of the Sopranos

If you're open to some feedback, it might be good to consider doing at least a tiny bit of review/discussion after the reaction. It's just the type of show that really demands your attention during it and is more worthwhile when there's some level of analysis and reflection on ideas/themes rather than just casual reaction based on immediate shock value (unlike something more surface-level roller-coaster-y like Breaking Bad, for example). It's great to see Wire reactions becoming more of a normal thing. Certainly my pick for greatest show of all time by a wide margin, though the realization might be more of a slow burn.
@BingeBuffoon Жыл бұрын
I do plan on doing reviews moving forward. Usually, I do add a review/after thoughts to a video. This was just a negligent occasion. Clearly, The Wire deserves better.

Moar! We want more. Nice to see more people reacting to this show, it's an absolute classic. You ain't seen nothing yet. The first two or three episodes may seem a little slow, the thing to keep in mind with this show is watch carefully, eyes and ears open. Apart from the Gant flashback at the end of the first episode, the series won't confirm anything. If you listen and watch attentively you'll see how the story fits together. It's very engaging and the overall story in the season is great, as is the overall story through all five seasons. Personally I'd say seasons 4 and 2 are the best but the first four seasons are absolutely solid, with the fifth season not quite up to the same standard starts to fall into standard tropes etc but it's still great TV, just not to the legendary level of the first four seasons. You'll hear plenty of people dissing season 2, just keep an open mind.

Yo man, watch it, don't watch it. What the fuck do I care? Do I look like I'm caring? I'm from Baltimore, and live here now. There are parts of town just about still like The Wire. And yes, most every native loves the show because it's almost like you're watching a documentary with some very handsome and clever Baltimorons (It's Baltimoreans but I call us morons). The show is so goddam good that even though it isn't used as a tourism advertisement and does nothing to make anyone want to live here, it makes people from here proud of their realness and of having stories worth telling. Also, of course, the kinds of neighborhoods featured in The Wire were like at max (of the crack epidemic) 15% of the city back then and maybe 5 or 8% now at most.

Rec. you turn the captions off and just run it back if you need to. You read ahead in the first scene which doesn't bode well. Movie/tv/plays meant to be heard and seen, not read. Plus they can spoil scenes. #mytwocents
@BingeBuffoon Жыл бұрын
This is actually exactly how I used to feel about captions. I got in the habit of having them on for the sake of the screen record/footage for the reaction video. I will probably turn them off moving forward. However, they'll still be in my reaction videos so that I can turn the volume down on scenes when needed.

@@BingeBuffoon This is a phenomenal show, and I hope you'll watch all of it. But unlike most shows, it won't spoonfeed you every thing. You have to give it your undivided attention and figure some things out by yourself as the show goes on. But it's absolutely worth it! And it does some things that other shows very rarely do. Other than the end of that 1st episode, there are no flashbacks, ever. Things happen in the present. Also, other than maybe 1 or 2 exceptions over the entire 5 seasons, there is no sound track for music. Any music you hear always comes from something present in the scene, a radio, car radio, tv, etc..
