My first time watching Tremors (1990). I don't think I've seen one quite like this. It took me a second to click with the flick, but oh my gosh it was a blast! (at some points quite literally) I hope you enjoy my Tremors movie reaction & Commentary

One of the things I absolutely love about this movie is that when the scientist starts explaining, everyone just nods and says, "Whatever, you're the expert we believe you." Its a great contrast to all those monster movies where nobody believes the scientist until its too late.

One of the rare other movies with that reputation (the authorities and general populace believe the scientists right off) is the 1966 film ISLAND OF TERROR starring Peter Cushing. A weird, eerie little movie I wouldn't mind seeing someone react to.

Also that she doesn't just magically know everything, honestly she doesn't really know much more than they do, just a thing or two about seismology and the geology of the valley (where the dirt and rock is). Scientist characters are _notorious_ for knowing things that when you think about it they really _shouldn't_ know, just because the writer needs the characters to know it.

The thing about this movie that I love, is while the script takes digs at the characters, nobody is stupid -- even the kids, really. A lot of horrorish movies are driven by characters doing something just dumb as hell. It makes a horror comedy seem strangely realistic.

THIS part! Yes! The script was written with a nuance of silliness and comedy, but they also got the perfect actors to bring those characters to life in a realistic way so they weren’t cartoonish. It would’ve been very easy to have all of these people be complete caricatures 🙌

What I love about the design of the Graboids is how natural they look. Not overly edgy or monstrous, they look like something you’d really find out in the animal kingdom. Cause if you look through her gallery enough, you find plenty of strange critters, both in the present and the past.

Love how this movie constantly does the opposite of traditional horror tropes. Set during the day, the creatures are thinking animals and not mindless, there are two reveals (the ‘snake’ and then the ‘worm’), keeping all the characters on their toes (ha) w/ their problem solving, it being a cat and mouse situation, the characters are well written and not completely dumb or incompetent, they don’t have all the answers to what the creatures are, not over explained, and there are more than one of the monsters out and about rather than just a singular one for the first movie and more showing up for the sequel. Pretty unique to say overall.

This was the first monster movie I Saw growing up on the Navajo Nation! It's one of my favorites! Screenwriters Brent Maddock and SS Wilson were in the Navy, they were sitting on a large rock in a Nevada Test Site, they were taking notes and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus Tremors was born.

Before this movie, Michael Gross was best known for the sitcom Family Ties, where he and his wife are left wing former hippies in contrast to their conservative son Alex (the breakout role of Michael J. Fox). Which of course makes a hilarious contrast to his role in these films. He actually starting shooting this one literally 24 hours after filming wrapped on the final Family Ties season.

When this came out, I believe it was Reba McEntire's first acting role, so that was fun. And Michael Gross was known as the nice, sensitive dad on Family Ties so casting him as the gun-loving doomsday prepper was genius.

You could do worse than to watch his whole filmography, with such cult-classics as "Big Troulble In Little China", The Golden Child," "The Prince Of Darkness," "Mystery Date," and "The Last Emperor." This film has elements from so many different genres. B-monster horror film, science fiction, buddy comedy, westerns, some minor romance with Val and Rhonda, some mystery at the start as they try to figure out what these monsters are. Yet leaving the origin of the graboids ambiguous (until the sequel) as that information is less important to the plot; this is a story about a town working together to survive and less about defeating the monster.

"Broke into the wrong goddamn rec room, didn't ya you bastard!" Part of the backlash this movie got (and currently gets), is that people judge the movie on the mislabeled "horror" genre. It's a "creature feature" movie, which is a subgenre of action/adventure. Fun Fact: S.S. Wilson said that he got the idea for the film while he was working for the U.S. Navy in the California desert. While resting on a rock, he imagined what it might be like if something underground kept him from getting off the rock. Land Jaws Fact: When Chang is partially swallowed by the Graboid, it swerves back and forth before drawing back under the ground. It's almost identical to the scene near the end of Jaws where Quint slides into the mouth of the giant shark and it swings back and forth with him in its mouth before sliding back into the water. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Burt and Heather used the following firearms to kill the Graboid that burst into their rec room: Stey-Mannlicher SSG-PII, Winchester model 70, Winchester Model 1200 Defender, HK91A2, Colt AR-15 Sporter II, Remington 870, Sig Sauer P226, Ruger Redhawk, M8 flare gun, and then finally Burt finishes it off with a Belgian William & Co. 8 gauge shotgun (The Elephant Gun).

Chris ...And what gets me, is that people want to die on the "This Is A Horror Movie!" hill for some reason. I keep telling them there's no honor in insisting that this is a horror movie, because they don't have a case. Any movie enthusiast or critic that's not pushing an agenda, will tell you this is not a horror movie.

Further gun fact: Both Michael Gross and Reba McEntire dislike guns being "glorified." So they insisted on demonstrating safe and proper gun handling at all times, even in the insane situation they're in throughout the movie. This is best seen near the end, where Burt gives Melvin an empty revolver to get him to move. He takes back the gun-which he _knows_ is empty, and checks that it's clear anyway, .

in coming up with things to say about this movie, let me help you out. This movie is noteworthy for many reasons, all of which contribute to why so many people love this movie so much: Not only does it have smart witty writing, perfect pacing, and great humor... But as far as horror movies go, it is also one of the _very_ few horror movies that takes place almost entirely in daylight (so it doesn't rely on darkness for its scares), and all of the characters in this movie are likable in their own way, not cliched stereotypes, and most importantly, they all make smart decisions. In many horror movies, the plot and the script need to make the characters stupid or remove their common sense in order to create situations where they will die: so they don't call the police when they should, a killer is chasing them but they run to a different room in the building instead of running out the door, they go to investigate places on their own instead of with others, etc.... But in this movie, all of the characters make smart decisions given the situation and do things that most people _would_ actually do in that same situation. If you haven't seen it then I _strongly_ recommend putting the movie Lake Placid on your next poll, because it is a perfect companion to this movie, and another underappreciated horror movie with incredibly smart, and very, VERY funny writing.

@@TheBlott2319 Look you can feel free to disagree, but in my opinion, it _does_ have smart and funny writing. That _doesn't_ mean that I think the characters in that movie are smart... quite the opposite in fact - I agree that they behave very stupidly throughout. But overall, it is my personal opinion (and apparently the opinion of many others) that the movie is a very enjoyable and fun experience to watch.

Each Tremors is o.k. unless compared with the original (featured) in which case they are not-very-good fun.

I remember being young when this came out. Every poster and image made me terrified and have nightmares. Then I saw some of the film and rolled my eyes.

If you liked *Tremors,* you should watch *Arachnophobia,* it has a very similar feel.

One plus of the next two sequels is that each introduces a different life-stage of the graboids that are completely different from the giant wormlike forms, and all have the same quirky humor of this film. The fourth one is also interesting in that it's a *western*. Five and beyond are less well-made however and the short-lived TV series is... strange and confusing if you don't watch them in production order (they were aired wildly out of order on the Syfy channel and that in itself doomed the series.

I hate when networks air shows out of order and mess up the continuity. Why do they do this?!

@@CasualNerdReactions Supposedly had to do with ratings, but in this case it proved a very bad idea. Audiences were confused (i know I sure was) because the events of the second shown episode referred to events in an episode they wound up not showing for many weeks afterward. Totally made no sense in both senses of the word.

The sequels are not great, but they all have a certain charm.

listen... I remember seeing only one part of this movie as a kid and it was the scene with the guy on the telephone wire. I grew up in the Mojave desert and I never even saw the monsters but as a little kid I remember being traumatized bc the man in the tower was so scared he couldn't get down and just died. I couldn't even watch this movie until I was an adult and then I laughed bc I didn't even know it was a comedy. (I still truly hate the premise bc the wide open desert is scary enough without those lil mfs. lol

This movie has got a lot of setups and payoffs that doesn't feel like forced. Scenes feel legit as well, not put there because they were required by the story to happen. Other than that, it has everything: adventure, mystery, comedy, a little bit of romance, and worms that aren't completely stupid and can develop new strategies. They've made two more if I remember correctly, but they weren't as good as this one.

Great movie . I don't like usually horror movies but this is an exception because it is mixed with comedy. : ) I love the scene with the monster that attack the gun crazy couple it cracks me up :) . You got in into the wrong rec room :) . The sequels are really bad you can totally skip them. Another great Kevin Bacon mixed supernatural horror film which is not well known is Stir of Echos 1999. A great Fred Ward movie is Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

My Favorite Chris one-liners from this reaction: 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Is that Reba McIntyre? He said, “I’m Dead.” Heh. Not yet buddy, give it a few. Yo, listen to the horse! He may know something you don’t! You’re not supposed to eat the horses! I don’t think you can run fast enough fellas. I mean you should try, obviously. Oh! Y’all dumb. Cause it’s not stupid. She doesn’t know she’s not his type. What’cha gonna do? Go! Make haste friends! Her hoppity-hop got bitity-bit! I liked him. I didn’t know his name but I liked him. Burt & Heather, may God have mercy on their souls. Oh, this would be easier if they were dumb. Well, unfortunately, I think the new plan is EVERYBODY DIES! Run! Don’t stop and look you, Dingus! He’s not gonna get got…Oh, frick he’s gonna get got. My instinct was to yell “Yippy Kai Yay” but, you know, that’s a different franchise.
