FIRST TIME WATCHING / TROLL 2 ~ THERE IS NO GOD

*Troll 2* (1990) is a legendary trainwreck so epically terrible it loops around to being entertaining-if your idea of “entertaining” is watching sincerity go head-to-head with abysmal filmmaking. The title promises trolls, but you get goblins-GOBLINS spelled backward is NILBOG, a twist that’s about as subtle as a brick in the face. The plot? A family vacation to a town full of shape-shifting vegetarian goblins who want to turn humans into plant goo and eat them. Because logic apparently took a holiday during production.
Every performance in *Troll 2* feels like a community theater audition gone very, very wrong. Characters stare blankly into the middle distance, delivering lines with all the passion of someone reading a grocery list-if their grocery list included “double decker bologna sandwiches” and “lumpy milk.” The “special effects” look like someone raided a Halloween store’s clearance bin, and the script only makes sense if you consider “making sense” as optional.
Yet, somehow, you can’t look away. It’s the cinematic equivalent of rubbernecking at a fender-bender, but the fender-bender is wearing goblin masks made of old dish sponges. The film tries to be horror, but the only horrifying thing is that it exists. And that’s exactly why it’s amazing. If you ever find yourself wondering, “Could this movie possibly get any worse?”-congratulations, you’ve just summed up the entire viewing experience of **Troll 2**. In short, it’s awful, nonsensical, and the perfect watch if you want to feel better about literally every other movie you’ve ever seen. Enjoy at your own risk.

There's a documentary about the impact of this movie directed (if I remember correctly) by the actor who plays the son and seen through the eyes of the actor who played the father. It's fascinating and rather sad when the wonder of discovering the movie's cult status gives way to certain realities, not the least of which was the state of the actress who played the mother.

The script writers barely spoke English. Supposedly they gave the scripts to the actors scene by scene. When the actors tried to correct the scripts, they were told to stick to what was on the script.

Tara, you can't piss on hospitality, I won't allow it! =P Btw, the actor playing the dad is actually a dentist. It's called Troll 2 to cash in as a sequel to the 1st Troll movie, which has Sonny Bono in it and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in an early role. The dad in the movie is actually named Harry Potter and this was before the JK Rowling creation! This was a bit of a cluster to make because the crew were Italian and could not speak English and all the actors were American (most of them from Utah and I believe it was filmed there) and could not speak Italian. Though they did have a translator there If I remember right. Like most Italian directors they always have an American alias name just to show that their movies is "definitely not Italian and full American". "Drake Floyd" is actually Claudio Fragasso, who also did Zombie 4, a.k.a. Zombie Flesh Eaters 3. And for some reason, his movies always has fog in them. There is a documentary about this movie called Worst Best Movie and it's directed by the actor who played the son. It's actually really good and it's definitely much better made than this movie ;) XD It also shows that the actress playing the mother might actually have some mental problems....

Part of why the acting sounds so bad is because it’s all ADR’ed. Meaning they probably WERE reading the lines like a table reading and they add their voices later. I think because the ppl who made it are Italian, and in Italian Giallo films for instance, they always ADR the dialogue.
