The DVD, however, aside from having all three endings, also offers the option to play the movie with one randomly selected ending. Heartbreaking Loss Fact: The Max Busch House, the mansion used for the exterior and ballroom scenes, was destroyed by a massive fire on October 5, 2005. After the fire, several people left flowers on the front gate and even shed tears, evidence of how much the house was cherished by the local community. Random Order Fact: Wadsworth decides how the guests will be paired up to search the house by cutting matchsticks into various lengths, and the guests appear to draw these at random. Naturally, the partners were assigned by the script and the process could not be left to chance. Before Tim Curry holds out the cut matchsticks to the actors, he was given them in the correct order. The actors acted as if they were picking randomly, but simply drew the matchsticks in order from left to right.

I first saw this when i about 10, so 1990ish when it was on UK tv. It took over from Halloween 3 as my favourite film, and i watched this about 4 times a week for the next 2 years. I still love it now, but not as obsessively😂.. I can still quote all the dialogue though.

When this was in the theaters you only got one ending but there were three versions out there. So you could watch the movie and have a different ending that your friend who saw it at a different theater. When it was put on VHS you got all three endings together in this format. And this is the version you get on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K, and streaming services.

The writing, physical comedy and overall style of this movie are all amazingly well done. One of the best who-dun-it's of its kind, ever probably. And the whole idea from a board game and with multiple endings that at the time you had to go see it again (and maybe get the same ending lol) was so unique. The word "underrated" or "underappreciated" gets thrown around quite a bit on YT, but this movie sure fits that bill. A classic to be sure, certainly a cult classic. I feel like every film major or writer should watch this and do a case study on it.

In one draft of the script, it had Wadsworth curse when he realizes he's in the shower, but it was cut. Carrie Fisher was going to be cast, but she was in rehab at the time, and she had it arranged to work with the time she would need to return to rehab, but the studio rejected her for insurance reasons. There was also a fourth ending, but they scrapped it; however, someone on KZbin posted the Clue novel on KZbin as an audiobook if you want to check it out.

When this came out they had the slightly genius idea of making you go to 3 theaters... you literally had one end on each, and only when the VHS came out did all 3 get revealed back to back. Since not everyone got to see all the endings, the VHS was very popular.

The board game was invented in the UK in 1943/1944. So yes, the movie was based on the game and not the other way around. Btw. only in Canada and the USA the game is called "Clue". Everywhere else it's known as "Cluedo". 🙂

I was 19 when this was released, was already familiar with most of the cast, and loved murder mysteries. Went to three different theatres to see all three endings. Still love this movie to this day, and quote it regularly. There are so many great lines! 🤣
