And they were doing it in movie for different reasons like being under cover. When you do a rewatch of this, you should watch it with the actor commentary turned on. RDJ mentioned in the movie that he doesn’t break character until the dvd commentary, and he stays in character for it in the actual commentary

2008 was a wild time. RDJ even got nominated for an Oscar for this movie (but was destined to lose to Heath Ledger as The Joker). I remember watching this and Iron Man (and The Dark Knight) in theaters. This is actually my favorite of the three! I wish they still made comedies like this!

The character of R.D.J. It's a criticism of how the industry was a few years ago. He criticizes actors who give their lives for the role, but who don't understand when there should be a limit. Kirk Lazarus sees no limits and does things in black face just to feed his own ego. Im a black guy.

You WILL be hooked from the first minute to binge watch all of 1883 to find out what happens with Elsa! It starts with one season of 1883 then it goes to the same family in the show 1923, then it has 5 seasons in present day called Yellowstone... I CANNOT believe that MTV did this show! lol this was funny. i never knew rdj did this until like 4 or 5 years ago. he really did look and sound black. what if instead of don cheadle they replaced terrence howard with him as rhodey in ironman? lol as far as the black face in movies and shows conversation i'm mixed about it. i know the history of it from like the 20's, 30's and 40's stuff, and don't like it, but at the same time if it's ray sist to do that in movies within the last few decades then i can't really blame the actors, i gotta blame the script writers and producers who came up with the idea. i can't speak for all of them but i think most of the actors were probably just trying to book any role they could get out of desperation not because they were predjudice.

RDJ did not do blackface. He actually is guilty of making himself look "more white". RDJ goes blonde and blue eyed to play the character of Kirk, who is an actor. The actor Kirk does blackface to play the Sgt Osiris role. Now, did RDJ actually do blackface? Yes, but with a giant asterisk. It was not meant to turn him into a black man, it was done with well thought out and specific intent, and the whole point of it was to highlight what is wrong with doing blackface while simultaneously making fun of that type of actor. That role/film did more for showing what is actually wrong with blackface than any of the people who are using the film/role as a way to prop themselves up and pretend they are on a moral high ground so they can look down on everyone else.

The important part about this is RDJs character is made to be the butt of the joke, not black people, and also, He is called out by the actual black man next to him time and time again, saying how "we dont all talk like that", saying "thats the theme song for the jeffersons", and saying "they had one good role for a black man and they gave it to crocodile dundee" They were calling out white actors playing native americans and other non-white roles. They were also calling out method actors and in general of course the shallowness of actors. As you allude to, the issue with blackface is well several things, first its roots are in straight up mocking black people in minstrel shows making them look bad and purposefully stereotyping. But in more recent times "black face" is used by maybe well meaning actors taking a role from a black person or similarly other groups like gay people etc. This is bad because 1, they often have less roles available to them, and 2, importantly, they havent lived the experience and so instead of getting insightful commentary on being black in america, or what its like to be gay or whatever, too often we end up with more of the straight white male perspective.
