One of my favorite stories about this movie is about Inigo's revenge for his father. At the end when he says, "I want my father back, you SOB!" the actor, Mandy Patinkin, was thinking of his own dad who died when he was 18. He said he imagined fighting the great evil that was cancer who took his father's life, as he plunged the blade into him. 😥💔😭

Hey, an excuse for me to use my English degree in the wild! It’s worth noting that the “romantic” literary period wasn’t necessarily related to love stories at all-it was characterized primarily by an emphasis on heightened emotion and nature (and, in gothic romance, an added fixation on religion, the supernatural, and death). Someone else mentioned Wuthering Heights (which is an excellent example of a novel from the Romantic subgenre that is not a love story at all, despite a love story being part of the plot), but novels like The Scarlet Letter (in which a woman’s long-finished affair destroys her life and wracks everyone involved with guilt), the Hunchback of Notre Dame (which has very little in common with the Disney film, although the Hellfire song comes close to the novel’s actual tone) and The Count of Monte Cristo (revenge, revenge, and more revenge) are other good examples. Emotions like rage and grief and guilt play as large-if not more-of a role as love and desire do in this kind of “romance”. So Princess Bride is sort of parodying/enjoying the romance period with exaggerated elements of every trope, and that’s part of what makes it so funny. We all know how these stories should go, but the film always manages to both lean in and go sideways at the same time. The novel is a brilliant literary work, but the film does a fantastic job of capturing the humor. It’s where the modern genre of romance stole its name, but they focus primarily on the emotion of love and usually forget the focus on nature altogether. And if you cared enough to read this far, thanks for letting me ramble on!

He loves her so much, he would probably let her marry someone else if it would make her truly happy, but he had to be sure of her feelings before he could reveal himself because otherwise she may not tell the truth out of guilt (or out of fear she wouldn't recognize his meaningless farm boy existence, since it's been years and she's engaged to a prince now).

An important distinction is that a story can be “romantic” without featuring or focusing on the act of two people falling in love (they took care of that in the beginning). A romantic movie can include things like people in peril, lost love, reuniting love, sweet revenge with cool swordplay, etc. That all tallies up to a “romantic” story.

Excellent point. And there need not be a love story at all. Classic "romance" is heroic adventure. Yes, there can be a "damsel in distress" but that's just one possible element. And the love element can be truly messed up, if present. "Wuthering Heights" is an example of a gothic romance that is only barely a story of love between Catherine and Heathcliff. With all this in mind, "The Princess Bride" is ironically not about the titular character at all, but is rather the adventures of Westley, Inigo, and Fezzik. Inigo, in particular, is on his own heroic, romantic quest.

Zuff has the read of the situation when it comes to Buttercup. This almost plays like a parody of fairytale adventure fantasy and unfortunately, Buttercup is pretty true to the classic formula of the damsel in distress princess with little agency or dimension. Her character is basically a prop to serve the motivations of the men (the kidnappers fight to keep her for profit, the prince uses her for his political ambitions, and she's the object of Wesley's hero quest). The only independent expression of her will is to die rather than be with without Wesley which doesn't exactly contradict all this. So I agree, her character is quite uninteresting. That aside, I have such a fondness for this movie. The other characters are so distinct and memorable and this movie is one of the most quotable of all time. The fight choreography is next level and it's just genuinely funny. It strikes the perfect balance between absurdity and reverence. The situations are ridiculous but you're still invested in the characters and their emotional journey. The creatures and sets are a little hokey but it 100% works. Who could forget that rodent of an usual size? I'm pretty sure that's a partial cause of my mother's rodent phobia lol.

I disagree: Buttercup has agency, though not a lot of liberty to exercise it: She tries to escape the boat, and when she's brought back, she looks Vizzini in the eye and basically calls him a coward. She defies "Roberts" to his face, accuses him of killing Westley, and pushes him down the hill. If it had been Roberts, she would have been free to either go back to the prince, who was on his way, or try something else. She makes the decision to go back to Humperdinck in order to save Westley from being skewered by arrows. She accuses Humperdinck of being what he truly is - the only person in the palace who looks him in the eye and speaks truth, including at the wedding where she notes there is fear in his eyes. So though she isn't a jumping, running, athletic person, she exercises the agency she has. This may be overshadowed by the more rambunctious action going on, but it's a mistake to overlook it.

Overall I do agree. Buttercup exists mostly has a motive force to propel the story forward rather than a distinct character in her own right, though she does showcase a fair amount of sass and courage within the confines of the damsel role, and I think Robin Wright did a very good job adding depth to her. The only major point of contention I have is when she basically stands there screaming for Westley during the rat fight in the fire swamp. Like, she doesn't even have a basic fight or flight response, she just screams helplessly. Even as a child that bothered me, when I was way too young to understand how useless women were often portrayed as in cinema.

Cary Elwes (Westley) has been in a lot of movies. Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Glory, Twister, Liar Liar (w/Jim Carey) and Kiss The Girls to name a few. They hired two of the best fencing masters in the world to train the actors who played Westley and Inigo. They spent weeks training on set abd became so proficient that when they finally filmed the fight scene on the cliff that it was over too quickly. The fencing master had to rechoreograph the whole fight to stretch it out. We ended up with one of the best sword fights on film. 29:56 that hit on the head actually knocked Cary Elwes out because the other actor hit him too hard. He'd already broken or sprained his foot while riding an atv on set but kept quiet about it so he went through a lot of pain while filming this movie. They let Billy Crystal ad lib his whole part. Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) strained to hold his laughter in so hard that he bruised a couple of ribs. Rob Reiner, the director, had to walk off set because he couldn't stop laughing.

I see this claim so often that I'm starting to think that it qualifies as a "common myth." Billy Crystal could not possibly have ad-libbed all of his lines, because most of what he says is straight from the book. Anyone who's read the book immediately recognizes most of his dialogue. I suspect what actually happened is that he and Carol Kane ad-libbed a great many lines _during shooting,_ which led to the bruised rib and whatnot, but not too many made their way into the final cut.

Being a child of the pre-streaming 90s is funny in that you watched enough TV to develop comfort movies, but they are whatever random collection of tapes you recorded from the TV and what you could find / convince your parents to spend money on in Blockbuster. Prince Humperdinck, not king. The king is there till the very end. Though for us it's been only a few minutes from the time Westley leaves, for Buttercup it's been five years without a hint that he's okay. Also his behavior is nothing like the man who left the farm. In a way, she's right not to recognize him because he has changed a great deal. Both were poisoned, he's built up an immunity. If you watch this again and listen to the dialogue, you will catch it, as he states it fairly clearly. The line about swimming after an hour is a little joke referring to visits to the beach or the pool: parents always said you need to digest for an hour after eating before going swimming. The bishop is Peter Cook, one of great British comedy duo, the other being Dudley Moore. Grandpa is not Westley, he simply loves his grandson and remember that "as you wish" means "I love you". In what way was Buttercup not good? She was a truth speaker to Vizzini about courage; she saved Westley in the forest after he saved her; she's the only person who spends time with Humperdinck who looks him in the eye and insults him. That's pretty good.

So many hilarious stories I cant even pick my favorite, plus a lot about Andre and his dedication to this role and how much the cast loved him. 22:35 Vizzini's switch mattered because he was rambling to try to get a reaction from Dread Pirate Roberts, when that didn't work, he switched the cups and chose but didn't drink before seeing that Roberts was happy with Vizzini's choice. So had it been a fair challenge, he would've likely tricked Roberts. It's often missed that Vizzini actually is using a good strategy there.

The romance is subtle but satisfying. It's directed by the wonderful Rob Reiner, who was a hilarious actor in his day and is a noble human being. ෴ The charming 'Iñigo Montoya' is played by Mandy Patinkin. Be sure to catch him in YENTL (1983) the drama/musical/romance. It's about a young woman who, in a time where females weren't permitted to attend Jewish schools, was determined to educate herself. It got numerous Golden Globes and Oscar nominations.

So Westley was played by Cary Elwes and he's been in tons of stuff (Kiss the Girls, Twister, Saw, Liar Liar) But he has also done voice acting for English dub for Studio Ghibli like the Cat Returns and Porco Rosso. He also did English dub for Felidae (so NOT a kid's cartoon but incredible nonetheless)

The Princess Bride is my all-time favorite movie! My favorite characters are Inigo Montoya and Westley. Funny story about the movie: Andre the Giant let out a 17-minute fart during the scene where Fezzik, Inigo, and Westley are on the parapet of the castle. Cary Elwes wrote it in his book. Best part was Rob Reiner asking Andre "Hey Andre, are you okay?" Andre's response "I am now, boss!"

Arnold Schwarzenegger tells a story about how, when he was in his bodybuilding prime, Andre the Giant just manhandled him. He took Andre out to dinner. He picked up the check when it came, but Andre wanted to pay, Arnold insisted, said how Andre was the boss in the ring, but he was the boss there, Andre tells him that he's right, then proceeds to pick him up out of his chair, like he was a little kid, and sits him down on top of a tall wine cabinet. Arnold said it made him feel like a little doll put up on a shelf.

I read the book about two years before the movie came out. I was really hoping that it wouldn't suck. It's one of the few book to movie adaptations that is as good as or better than the book. Edited: And yes, I'm old enough to have watched this movie in the theaters when it came out. I've watched it over a hundred times, maybe more.

I was surprised when you guys said this win your romance movie; when it was an adventure/ comedy/family movie, but romance. This has been a favorite of mine for many, many years. And it has thy best quotes of any movie.

It's technically a "romantic comedy", but "romance" in the sense of heroism and adventure - classical romance. There are many stories (like "The Three Muskateers") that are considered "romance" even though the love/relationship elements are secondary to non-existent. "Vanity Fair" is another one where there are relationships but they're either not central or they're tools used by the characters to further their monetary goals. (I'm thinking of Becky Sharp in particular, though Amelia has a more traditional love story going on.)
