@jaernihiltheus78178 күн бұрын
Yep. Oz is an alternate dimension from earth so even though we're hearing it in English - they're speaking a different language entirely (Ozian). The whimsical word choices are meant to reflect that to a degree, while also - in wicked's case - being used as a way to make sure certain lines have the correct amount of syllables for a song.
@allisonmoon25368 күн бұрын
i also like the idea that it's also because the Wizard introduced some of the words, but being uneducated as a "corn fed hick," perhaps his mispronunciation/misspelling was so common and, what the kids call loud & wrong, that the Ozians just accepted it into their daily vocabulary.

I think, with the advent of streaming, less people have watched The Wizard of Oz. When I was growing up, the Wizard of Oz would come on TV every year around Christmas/Thanksgiving on network TV...sort of like how The Ten Commandments would come around during Passover/Easter. Now that a lot of people don't have cable or watch network TV directly, they don't get to see these movies that would just come on TV all the time. And I don't think a lot of people would search out The Wizard of Oz because of its age. If Universal wants to make a lot of money on Wicked: For Good, it would be a good idea for them to get their hands on The Wizard of Oz and Wicked Part 1 and put them on the same streaming service. There are so many things and references to The Wizard of Oz that people wont get or understand fully if they haven't seen the movie. There is a lot of foreshadowing in Wicked that directly references the Wizard of Oz like the poppies that make everyone in the classroom fall asleep.

The Ruby Red shoes are a departure from the original novel released in 1900. MGM were just starting to use color and felt that silver shoe's didn't quite pop enough so changed them to red. Wicked wanted to use the red shoes in the stage version but couldn't get the rights to them which is why they use the original silver. The scene with Galinda tapping the red shoes together is just a nod to the Wizard of Oz movie. So is the fact that the silver shoes are in a box lined with actual Rubies.

@WatchMitchWatch Rouge is the makeup women use on their cheeks to make them look flushed (rouge is French for red) so it was just a really nonsensical excuse haha I'm watching you from Melbourne :)
@dnwhyte14 күн бұрын
@@thehouseofoverthinking rouge your knees is a term that comes out of the 1920s. At that time flapper dresses fell above the knees, which was scandalous enough on its own, but to draw extra attention and add to the scandal, flappers used to put rouge on their knees so they were even more visible. In this film, this phrase is probably also a tip of the hat to the musical Chicago - in the song All That Jazz they sing about rouging their knees and many other scandalocious things

Would love to see your reaction to the 1939 MGM Wizard of Oz, as it will make Wicked make more sense. Also, the Oz of the original books (plural) is quite different in some respects to the MGM version. Some of Wicked is based on the first book, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. And a whole lot of Wicked is original material.
@WatchMitchWatch4 күн бұрын
I might have to react to the original WOZ! Will you watch it?
@johnnehrich96014 күн бұрын
@@WatchMitchWatch ABSOLUTELY! There are scenes in that that always catch people by (pleasant) surprise and it is fun to see other people experiencing if for the first time. You probably are familiar with a number of the songs and bits of dialog, even if you didn't know where they came from The world of Oz that L. Frank Baum created in the early 1900's is really zany. All the animals speak but only do animal things, not teaching, nursing, etc., and no one is forcing them to not speak. (This concept a plot against the animals was necessary for Wicked so Elphaba had a cause to champion.) Alice in Wonderland also had a lot of animals that spoke but in Oz, there were these crazy OTHER creatures he devised. He wrote the Wonderful Wizard Oz in 1900 and 13 sequels before his death in 1919. He wrote these as (young) children stories, so there is a quality of innocence about them. Dorothy is the main protagonist and she is approx. 8-10 yo. In the MGM movie, she was played by Judy Garland, who was 16-17, playing her as a 14 yo - it was her incredible voice that is the reason she was chosen. (And from then on, there was a term "friend of Dorothy" for closeted men.) There is a wood cutter whose axe gets enchanted by a witch. Every time he goes to chop some wood, he cuts off another body part. He goes to the local tinsmith who makes him a prosthetic tin replacement, until he is all tin. In one of the sequels, he goes to visit this tinsmith and discovers the guy had saved all his human body parts, including his head - so he carries on a conversation with his former head. Also in the sequels is a man made out of sticks with a jack-o-lantern head brought to life by magic powder, a princess who changes her heads instead of her clothes, men who have wheels instead of hands or feet, a flying creature made of two sofas tied together with palm fronds for wings, a broomstick tail, and the head of a "gump," also brought to life with this powder. There are talking apple trees and trees that produce lunch pails, complete with lunch (and green napkins for leaves). In the original book, Emerald City is not really green. All the people who lived there and who visit are forced to wear green googles at all time, which are locked on. (Baum took this from a joke of a farmer supposedly so poor, he couldn't afford grass for this horses, so he put green glasses on them and fed them sawdust.) The MGM movie was made in an era where technical effects were difficult or impossible - no CGI. Even so, what they were able to do, though, is astonishing.
