You are doing the right thing, nothing better than just having a go, practice practice and more practice, this year i bought a welder, never had a go before but watched lots of KZbin videos and welded up my girlfriends Nissan cube, the back chassis rails are a new floor plus both inner rear wheel arches, just practice, great content, keep up the great work.

Hi Steve, welding outdoors with gas mig ain't easy, I put an old windbreak fitted with wooden feet around job wherever possible as even a light breeze can xugger up your gas flow and cause craters, porosity etc. keep at it and don't be frightened to ask a pro welder for advice if poss. Just got to plod away with these things. Nothing wrong with cereal boxes and shaping with whatever you've got to hand. Been there myself with just a vice and some angle iron. Not everyone has an English wheel in their garage or the room for it. Really enjoying your journey with the Viva.

Carry on as you are mate with tacking the small plates on... I think its coming on well considering your outside and the equipment you're using, its difficult to get a decent weld with that set up and you will blow the crap out of that thin rusty panel if you try and do some proper welds..its not structural so it doesn't have to be brilliant welding. Try and shape the steel with a hammer and stretch it into shape..you don't have an English wheel so that's all you can do. once the welds are linished down with a grinder and painted with some black hammerite it will look great.

Dave's garage on KZbin (from wales) uses several layers of masking tape to form a pattern for new metal sections and seems to work for him ,uses scaffold pole or his knee to bend the metal over sometimes as well Think i would use smaller sections of new metal to get the shape etc this involves more welding practice though Keep up the good work nice to see the old viva coming along 👍

Good effort mate, for tips on fabrication of areas and patching without fancy tools I can recommend fitzees fabrications on his channel, nothing fancy or flashy and not remotely condescending, just gets the job done.

The other wall opp the gas works might be a good place for a bench or mobile table with shopping trolley wheels and a bench vice bolted to it. I got a really solid table from a second hand shop and wheels from a s-trolley that was abandoned nearby. Some good steel in the trolley 🤗 Mig welding doesn't really work outside as the gas gets blown away. Also you've got to make yourself comfy when welding so you can see the welds and where to put the next bit. My flux core welder is great at thin stuff and after Much practice I have got the hang of it, most importantly try to keep the steel clean and any bit where you see holes, cut it out as it's a bitch to weld and most likely to blow a hole 😭 To the offended peeps, your opinions are noted and as useful as a chocolate teapot ☺️🖕👍🇮🇪

Alreet mate! Just carry on doing smaller repairs, its far too complicated to do in one panel. The hole higher up....drill it out with a Xmas tree bit to good metal, then cut a piece of plate to fit. If you're welding different thicknesses always weld from the thicker side, let it pool onto the thin part. BUT most of all you need gas!!! Those little bottles are poo 💩 go to either Dixons at Westerhope or Auto Panels at Birtley and get a hobbyweld bottle, there's no monthly hire charge on the bottle, you'll also need a regulator. Try not to weld in the wind as it blows the gas away, this is the reason you were having issues with the welds. You're doing an awesome job mate, everyone has to start somewhere 👌👍

Maybe if you anneal the metal your welding on it will be easier to work with. Annealing tends to “soften” it up and make it more pliable. You can also work with longer pieces and shape it as you go along. Fit a small section then fit the next section and so on.

Might be bad idea as it will warp and the whole thing go out of shape. Weld abit, let it cool and carry on like that is what I believe is the key to doing thin steel. I'm only an amateur who's been welding for years and self taught. Lots of videos on KZbin but with welding, everyone has their own opinion and a lot of it is not applicable to a lad welding thin stuff on old car steel with a cheapish welder. I mean they have gear worth well over a grand and they are earning a living from it with all the fabrication tools to hand. He will get there, but it will take practice and time.

@ warp? The whole idea about annealing is to make it soft / malleable. This isn’t a critical application and softening it up will make it much more easier to shape now and much more easier to get the lower edge lined up for finally installation. He’s doing a good job - I never said he wasn’t. More than 1 way to skin a cat.

Not sure what your experience is working on it but you never see anyone else on videos annealing it, bear in mind it's 20g so not too hard to knock into shape, given abit of practice. I've cut up panels from washing machines etc as it's free and you can do alot with a bench vice or a home made sand bag. Not being critical regarding your comment but it's not a way I've done it before. Maybe I need to experiment with it.....

@@terryatkinson899 I’m not trying to argue. And my man is getting along just fine; he’s a pretty clever bloke. And yeah, it certainly it depends on the metal characteristics and what one is working on. So, nah, I’m not criticizing his work. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t know if he’s using 18 gauge, 20 gauge, 22, ? It seems pretty stout though. He doesn’t need to get the whole thing or any section red hot; a propane torch with a few passes might soften it up enough to work it easier. Still, without annealing it he could fit a few inches & tack it then work his way across a few more inches, tack it, and keep fitting and tacking. He doesn’t need to risk running a full weld, I think tacking it and then running a thin bead of sealant over the seam will close it up.

You would need and english wheel to do it properly however ways can be found to roll steel the limit is your imagination and detetmination unless you have access to a workshop with body forming tools

Like one of your other correspondents, I was wondering about fiberglass : this part doesn't have any structural function, wouldn't that be enough ? Way back in the day I repaired a large hole in the floor of my Renault 6 with fiberglass : it worked a treat (those cars were notoriously rust-prone).

That's not bad for a first attempt. The porosity in the welds is caused by not enough gas flow. Those cheap regulators only really work on 5 and 6. To test it with the welder electrics off and the gas reg on press the trigger and you will hear it come out. But I strongly suggest you get a proper gas bottle with an adapter as those small ones from halfords are so overpriced and rubbish. The way I would do that job is. To cut out ALL the rust first in one uniform plate. Then cut that into sections if I need to for the shape. Using what I have cut out as the template for cardboard aided design to get the correct size. Once the metal is cut to size I would then beat it with a hammer bend in the filing cabinet etc till it's the correct shape using the part you cut off as reference. Tack weld it in the corners then seam weld it making sure to correct warping with your hammer and dolly as you go. Your welder settings are way too high it needs to be on 1 high on that welder and it will be good. If you fill the holes in thin metal with weld. The hole will just get bigger and or the rust will come back in a year.

If your trying to do a cut and butt. You have tacked it way to much. A cut and butt will be a much better job. You don't want to leave that rusty metal in there. The crators are from not enough gas. Sometimes blowing through is down to the settings in the welder or if the metal isn't good enough. With thin metal it's always best to take your time and let it cool. Don't worry what the welds look like as long as it's penetrating and strong a grinder will take care of the rest. also Them gas bottles are crap you will be lucky to get that panel finished with that. Would be worth nipping over to Dixon's of westerhope and buying a gas bottle. But with jobs like this the aim of the game is to get some strength back in the panel. If your happy with how it looks when your finished that's all that matters

Have a look at 'Make it Kustom', there's some good tips on metal shaping there. And you have excellent taste in breakfast cereal.

Buy the time you cleaned the rust off was that thing it was like tin foil don't matter wat cardboard as Long it's thin a fresh piece of steel god your really splashing the cash ent you 😂🤣 people do things in different ways do wat ever is easier for you there isn't a right way or wrong well I've been doing welding and fabrication for a living for 25 years long as it's good tidy weld and strong I've only got a 200 amp mig/arc gas and /gasless welder but I have dials and not switchs better set up you need a better regular so you can set up the flow up and little jobs I use flux wire £4 a small role lidi but my welder was £270 static arc great little welder for cars
