Everyone mentions Ringo as the least important Beatle. However, I think the Beatles would have sounded completely different with a different drummer. For any musical group, the drummer has a lot to do with setting the tone of the band. Just imagine what the Beatles would have sounded like with a different drummer. Would they still have been a good band? Absolutely. But songs like "Come Together," "A Day in the Life," "Ticket to Ride," and many others would have a different vibe. And the same is true for many other bands. For example, I think the Eagles would have had a completely different sound with a different drummer than Don Henley. (Forget for a moment that Henley is a superb vocalist and songwriter, and concentrate just on the sound of his drumming.) With someone other than Henley, the Eagles are still good... just different.

The Beatles themselves were going nowhere and knew it until Ringo stepped in for an absent Pete Best. As Paul put it, "I looked at John, then at George, and we were all just like holy f***!!!" True story. 1970s. We were on our way to a baseball game. Rainy. Overcast. We were pretty sure it was going to get rained out. Stopped at a convenience story. It’s the difference between an individual song and their overall output. YES they wrote plenty very happy -joyous! -songs, they could even be very silly, but they were rarely shallow. They could be somber, acknowledge darkness and difficulty as parts of life, but ultimately overall they were forward looking and optimistic. The little fade-down in the intro is a Moog synthesizer. George Harrison had seen one in California and felt like he had to get his hands on one. It was huge and almost impossibly complicated & difficult to figure out, with no instruction manual besides. George was the most technically adept of the band and began fiddling with it until he at last was able to produce some tuneful sounds. HCTS is one of the most classic outcomes of his dedication to this unusual instrument.

I WISH you had reacted to the music VIDEO for it, which is REALLY clever and cool, plus you see a few shots of them as well. MOST of their songs had happy lyrics, fun lyrics, lyrics about love. FEW of them were hateful or angry, like a LOT of lyrics in songs today. I LIVED through "Beatlemania" I was 16/17 years old in 1964. We fans LOVED the Beatles, they were the topic of our conversations, always listening to their records, reading all the magazines that were available on them, plastering their pictures on our bedroom walls, sitting through their movies "A Hard Days Night" and "HELP!" multiple times, watching them over and over again. Lining up for tickets to their concerts. We wanted to know EVERYTHING about them. As for John Lennon's remark that the Beatles "were MORE POPULAR (not "bigger) than Jesus, was TRUE. We fans were NOT doing any of the things I just mentioned for Jesus. You had to have BEEN there and LIVED through that period to KNOW HOW EXTREMELY POPULAR they were. NOTHING has come CLOSE to that SINCE.....NOTHING. We EACH had our FAVORITE Beatle, who we WISHED we could date. My friends and I in 1965 and 1966 were the same age group as their girlfriends and one of their wives at that time. We wish WE could have dated them. THEY were the focus of our lives, and were a very fun part of our teenage (and preteen, for some) and early 20s years. BY the way THEY WERE VERY GOOD LOOKING!!!! THEY WOULD STILL make it today, because their music THEN is STILL POPULAR and is STILL being discovered and LOVED by young people. In NOVEMBER they released their "last song ever" called "NOW AND THEN" along with a MUSIC VIDEO for it. It had millions of views, went to number one in the UK and Europe. It reached NUMBER ONE on the BILLBOARD ADULT ALTERNATIVE AIRPLAY CHART December 2023 NUMBER ONE on BILLBOARD'S RADIO AIRPLAY CHART. ALSO, reached NUMBER ONE on the DIGITAL SONG SALES tallies and the ROCK DIGITAL SONG SALES tallies in NOV. 2023. Their music is STILL BETTER than a LOT of what you HEAR TODAY. THAT has been said by MANY young people who are discovering their music today, and comparing it to what they have been currently listening to. There are many Beatles conventions still held around the world, every year. I have been to many of them, and the majority of attendees are FAMILIES, people of ALL ages, including mostly young people who weren't born when the Beatles were an active band. The same goes for any PAUL McCARTNEY or RINGO STARR'S concerts today. The audience is ALL ages, but primarily YOUNG PEOPLE and they know ALL the words to the songs they perform and are just as excited watching them in concert as we were. So, they are NOT just a "thing of the past" Their music is STILL going strong, still being discovered and APPRECIATED by succeeding generations. Their music will still be around in the future, just as all the other great composers from centuries ago. They have lasted 60 years since they first came to the US. and 62 years since their first record "LOVE ME DO" in the UK and EUROPE. The question of whether the Beatles would make it again today is irrelevant, because a historical event never repeats itself a second time. The popularity is still remarkable, 54 years after the split, the Beatles are currently among the 70 most streamed artists, well ahead of Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones or Michael Jackson, on Spotify, right in the middle of all the artists, who have become big and successful with streaming and the Internet. That without the solo activities of the “Fab Four”. Of the older artists, only Queen is some ranks ahead of the Beatles, which is primarily due to Bohemian Rhapsody. As soloists, the Queen members play no role in this ranking. Of course I can't look into the future, but I don't think it's unlikely, that the Beatles' appeal won't wane over the decades or even centuries, because that stuff gets stuck in your ears and in your head very quickly and the story of the Beatles is exceptionally attractive. Whether it will survive a third world war, which, it's hard to believe, is looming in dark clouds on the horizon, as people seem unable, to eliminate garbage like Putin, Trump, Kim and grotesque religions, is another question .

This is my favorite Beatles song - yes, great mood setting. My favorite band rocks hard, but is usually uplifting or at least hopeful at the end. Check out Styx and songs "Fooling Yourself" and "Come Sail Away"(NOT Official video - listen to album audio or live 1996). Styx has something for everyone with 3 lead singers/songwriters and a wide variety of song styles and deep messages. From the first power ballad "Lady" to the rock and metal influenced "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue"; to the introspection of "Man In The Wilderness", "Castle Walls", and "Crystal Ball". Check out other classic rock bands: Boston, Heart, Foreigner, Bad Company, The Who, Dire Straits.

I understand what you're saying about current music but It can and is being done, just maybe not so much in the US and the UK. I'm 72 so I grew up with The Beatles and was a fan club member and now at my ripe old age I'm a fan club member of a Japanese all female Rock Band called Band Maid. They appear to be even more wholesome than The Beatles, equally talented imo argueably more talented, Jimmy Page is a fan of their drummer and members of SlipKnot and Incubus are also fans of them. They are fundamentally a hard rock band but can do anything from ballads to crazy hard/progressive rock. I honestly think you'd love them, Try Daydreaming MV, Don't You Tell Me live, Endless Story live which are all slow to mid tempo songs and then Hate? live which is brutal both lyrically and musically but is an absolutely stunning performance of a brilliant song.

It is hard to say if the Beatles would succeed today. Music might be quite different since they spearheaded so much innovation. Someone did a video on all of t heir "firsts". They were the first hand to sell out stadiums and when the existing amplification was inadequate, improvements in the part of sound systems was required. They were the first hand to do music videos when they all got tired of touring. They and George Martin experimented with sound and even brought in unusual (to Western countries) instruments. Even the rooftop concert has been imitated by other. Did they preceded all other bands to be influenced by Indian music and eventually psychedelia? It is hard to say. But many young musicians were encouraged to experiment with their sound as well.

I appreciate your love of The Beatles but I wish you would do a bit of research in presenting background “facts”. Lennon’s comments about being “More Popular Than Jesus” were made in an early 1966 interview, that had no uproar when published in England in March of that year but caused an anti-Beatles backlash when published in America in July. Why is the date relevant? Because it impacted their final tour of America, and they stopped touring. The other fact is that his reference was in a wider statement about Christianity’s decline as a religion, which was the experience in England at the time, with fewer people attending churches and religious leaders looking for ways to attract people back to the faith. It had been a topical issue during the mid 60s there. So it wasn’t something said that could be used in a throwaway line now without an accurate timeline or without context, because the reaction in the United States was a significant period in The Beatles career and lives.

Yoko DID NOT "break up the Beatles" in any shape or form. Lazy,and tired comment of someone with absolutely no idea about what Lennon was about at that time.

She definitely didn't help. There's tons of recordings of them in studio where she is clearly not welcome by anyone except John. She was ans still is a pest. Sure the band was having internal conflicts but having a narcissistic pile of garbage infiltrating the studio, shows, interviews, and even casual gatherings did put a strain on the entire band. No one except John was comfortable around her. So you tell me how exactly she wasn't partially responsible for them breaking up.

I don't think it's fair to blame Yoko Ono for breaking up The Beatles. There were a lot of internal problems in the band. George had been unhappy for some time, partly because he thought Paul was a control freak. This is clear if you watch the Get Back documentary. John was starting to head in his own direction, both personally and artistically. Yoko was an irritant, and I personally don't like her, but I think they would have broken up even without her. The Beatles wouldn't have become as big a success without Ringo. Replacing Pete Best with him was the last piece of the puzzle. There are recordings of the band playing with Pete Best, and he clearly wasn't very good. Ringo has never been a flashy drummer. He took only one solo in all of the songs The Beatles recorded. But he contributed so much musically. He came up with all the drums parts himself, and they always complemented the song. He was also rock-solid technically. Many professional musicians have praised him.

Yeah, I agree about Yoko.. but without her... I feel like it would have taken longer for John to branch off to do his own thing. She gave him that "inspiration" or whatnot. And the part about Ringo? Yeah.. I agree ONE HUNDRED percent. He's a HUGE part of the Beatles success. I wish people gave him the credit he deserves.

Love Steph's comments. But yours? Seriously? You continually throw out rumors (and not just about the Beatles) that were discarded as BS 50 years ago. I can understand a few mistakes, but it's getting to where you'd like us to believe that "Paul is still dead." Before you give Steph this condescending attitude on music she's never heard before, at least get some of your own facts straight. At least just a little fact-checking on your part wouldn't kill you, nor your KZbin site.

"More popular than Jesus"[nb 1] is part of a remark made by John Lennon of the Beatles in a March 1966 interview in which he argued that the public were more infatuated with the band than with Jesus and that Christian faith was declining to the extent that it might be outlasted by rock music. His opinions drew little controversy when originally published in the London newspaper The Evening Standard, but drew angry reactions from Christian communities (fake Christians in my opinion) when republished in the United States that July.

Harrison's best song, IMO. Weak vocals. (The amount of shake in his voice seems to be exactly the same as in mine.) But a great song sung by a bad singer beats a bad song sung by a great singer.

In terms of "shake", yes. The isolated vocal, which is freely available, is quite bad. Why do you think his vocal was re-recorded when the song was used in a movie? He was a weak singer. All Those Years Ago is especially bad. Try listening before you attack someone for saying things that are actually true.@@hmm3484

Everyone has a stile to their voice that identifies them. You call George's voice shaky and weak..i understand what you are saying and i hear it too. But that is what made the band so different , they had an identity , and when they combined their voices in harmony it was heavenly.. imagine if they all sounded the same.. how boring would have been!

I just wish they had re-recorded the vocal on that one, rather than (apparently) hoping that the other tracks would conceal the problem. George's vocals were usually better than that. I cannot think of another song of his where I wish the vocal had been re-recorded. I suppose these days his vocal can (and maybe already has been) pitch-corrected and spliced back in. I don't like hearing a problem with what is otherwise such a great song.
