Interesting. Back in my day, they were interlocking systems. The SP crossed the interlocking system with the Katy in Houston, and the then Santa Fe in Navasota, Tx. I was a brakeman for the Sp from 68-72. A lot has changed since then.
@davidbarnett93128 жыл бұрын
PS: That's what they were called then, so hopefully no one will feel the need to correct me. Thank you.

Diamonds were tough on us signal guys because wires had to buried mostly by hand. From one side of the diamond to the other so the signal circuit would work. If the other track was signaled the same thing had to be done. Than a heavy loop wire was tacked to the tie edge all around the diamond to detect a rail car left behind on the solid steel section (diamond) to keep all signals at stop. Just the opposite of the loops at traffic lights which allow the light to turn on the green arrow and hold cars going straight. LoL

Any chance we could see a video of trains using the other track? We know how NS train use this diamond and how smooth it is. I feel it would be interesting to see how the other lines trains sound using it.
@MichiganCentralLines8 жыл бұрын
I would like to catch them eventually, I have not had the chance to catch the Ann Arbor railroad on that diamond yet, but when I do there will most certainty be a video released.

Cool video.. I'm utterly confused about all the crossing signals there LOL... Didn't know Michigan had signals that the bells stopped sounding after gates are lowered...
@MichiganCentralLines8 жыл бұрын
+whammy3323 Yep, those are new for this area. In addition some of the gates were not wired and did not activate during the trains we filmed

Simply laying the entire diamond on top of a massive concrete pad, would extend the life of the diamond by 3 times. That would be due to the fact that there won't be as much shifting and bouncing of the diamond itself on the ballast, since there would not be any ballast; the ties would be laid directly on top of the concrete pad itself. (the pad would have strategically placed holes in it to drain away the rain. )
@blackiechong43447 жыл бұрын
yes but the trains would cause cracking of concrete you need track movement .

The wear on diamond crossings comes from the gaps in the rails for the flanges of the wheels to pass through. As the wheels roll into the gaps, they "batter" the cut ends of the rail and eventually ruin them. It's kind-of the same as hitting a pot-hole in the street with your car... dropping the tire into the hole isn't the bad part...striking the pavement around the hold and climbing out is. This "One Way Low Speed" diamond is a different design than the old. The "high speed" rails are not cut for flange-ways. Instead, the "low speed" route's wheel flanges are ride up and carried over the "high speed" rails. That's what the wonky "wings" are on the new diamond. The consequence is quieter operation all around, while the "high speed" line can go faster but the "low speed" line has to go even slower.
@ethanlamoureux53067 жыл бұрын
From the looks of it, the wheels on the low speed side actually ride over the other rails on their flanges. Am I right?

Not exceeding 20 mph. Talked by the signal, the block was occupied by the workers. You wouldn’t be able to get a favorable signal.

why no trains on the one track Ann Arbor Railroad line?
@MichiganRailProductions8 жыл бұрын
I may not be the person you are looking for to answer this, but I do know why. The AA only runs 2 trains a day there, and the schedule always changes. The chances of catching the AA in Milan are very slim, and that is probably why he did not catch any AA trains.

Nice video, Altho I don't know what the diamond is it looks like the position where two tracks cross each other. Am I correct?
@jovetj7 жыл бұрын
Yes. The formal name is a "level (track/line) crossing" but the colloquial term is "diamond" because the four guard rails in the center are typically diamond shaped, especially if the tracks are crossing at less than a 90° angle.
