Connor, I really admire your positive attitude while dealing with these POA issues. I'd recommending applying Tenacity plus triclopyr for post-emergent control. In the fall, you could prevent it from coming back next spring with a preemergent app.
@buckhorncortez2 жыл бұрын
Poa annua sprouts in the fall from seeds. You need to apply a pre-emergent in the fall to deal with the seeds that sprout in the fall as this will stop the grass from carrying over to the next spring. You also might want to try another spring pre-emergent as early as possible to deal with any remaining seeds. It may take you 2-3 years to kill all of the poa treating with pre-emergent. You're much better off considering this as a long-term project and working on it for several years until you win. Killing all of the grass and "starting over" isn't going to cure the problem as there will still be poa seeds in the soil and they'll sprout with the new grass seed - and you'll have bluegrass with poa in it that will continue to spread every year as it makes more seeds. Pre-emergent is the best solution.

If triv, you’ll have to smoke it off with roundup. If poa annua, could try withholding water until it dies and applying preemergent to keep it from coming back. In your climate, though, poa annua may be a perennial and not an annual, which makes it much tougher.

hey, I feel you might have been posting less videos because you feel maybe discouraged by your yard. I might be completely wrong but I just want to say it still looks beyond great. I have the same problem where I had a great yard for a while and then poa annual and triv problems appeared and it's so discouraging. I have learned a lot of your videos though so you are still a great influence. I used to have analysis paralysis with application and it having to be perfect. but your approach to mixing some ferts or just getting it done has really put me in the right mindset. in a way I would say you are the Andrew camarata, another KZbinr, of lawn care. or maybe he is the Connor ward of machinery. even that you deal with your kids leaving your lawn has taught me to let things just be. just continue pushing your lawn and beautiful flowers. in a few years poa cure will come out and our poa triv nightmare will be gone. just keep going and be the laissez faire entertainer we all love.

I don’t know enough but like one of the other comments said, I would try tenacity to get it under control. If it turns pale you know you have triv. Perhaps from there you can spot spray with roundup and blue marker die. Come back with a light seeding over the area, and then every couple weeks, do small doses of fertilizer.

Connor, you have a unique situation because of your climate. Poa typically dies off in real summer heat, which is something you don't really get. Pebble Beach Golf Links and other courses have learned to live with it and their greens are all Poa. Prodiamine applications in the spring and fall done over multiple applications a month or so apart will help suppress new germination. Pray for heat and watch it die.

@mrcaffein2 жыл бұрын
Verticutting can help with poa as well since it has a horizontal growth habit the verticutting slices it up and helps remove/stand up the seed heads to be cut off. You should probably be bagging your clippings to prevent spreading the seeds further and use a pre-emergent (probably prodiamine) this fall/next spring religiously. If tenacity lights it up, it's most like annua or triv. Edit: And if you aerate all the time, try to avoid aerating if you don't have compacted soil. You will just stir up more annua/triv seeds. (Though with driving that machinery on it, you probably deal with some level of compaction.)

It’s Poa. I had the same problem this spring because I didn’t get a pre emergent down last fall (only spring). I purchased Blindside and put it down a week ago. It halted and Poa and is brown but also stoped the growth of my bluegrass as Poa as you know is a grass. I would recommend using it at the full dose for Bluegrass. I would hate to ruin that nice lawn of yours, so test a small section first.
@nickmeyers29772 жыл бұрын
Kill the whole area off in October before it goes dormant. Keep spraying every month or 6 weeks next year in anticipation for an August seeding. Once August arrives, use you fancy aerator in addition to slit seeding.

I had amazing results last year to this year getting rid of poa annua in my backyard. What i did was in late fall and early spring i split applications of prodiamine. Then in june I did an application of Bensumec. I have gotten rid of 95% of it, there's only a couple small clumps left, probably from missing those spots with my sprayer. You can definitely get rid of the annua easy i think with timely applications of pre-emergent. If you can get your hands on a product called Prograss herbicide, that is supposed to be able to control poa annua post emergent in cool season lawns. I'd actually love to see you try this stuff out because I am super curious about it. It's expensive though. If you're right about the triv though, I'd probably try to dig out those spots and re-seed before I nuked everything. Also I love watching you use the triplex, amazing striping!
@comodo39102 жыл бұрын
Does anyone in NJ want to split a bottle of this stuff?
@dylan82852 жыл бұрын
All of that spots is poa annua and or rough bluegrass more known as poa triv. The only way to control it is pre emergent in the spring and fall over the course of a couple seasons it will take care of it. but nuking it is not going to help it will only make it worse, both triv and annua make a ton of seed and it germs quick and it looks just like any rye or blue in its young stages. There is no herbicide for it either that wont take your blue with it. Ik here they both die in the summer heat idk if they do for u. But you will just have to go on a heavy preemergent program from now on both spring and fall and just always have a preemergent barrier. Its really the only option for triv and annua

Looks like it is poa annua in your lawn; those little green spots. There are herbicides that will just target poa, but you risk killing off your entire lawn, especially if you are not sure of the extent of the poa annua infestation. To control it, verticutting is a good way to reduce poa thatch. Solid tine aeration accompanied with sand top dressing and overseeding is probably a better way to go. Poa grows everywhere in the cool/transition zone and unfortunately its virtually impossible to exterminate.
@drlovety2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, POA a for sure. I had it in places so I nuked my lawn in the fall, but the POA seeds took off when I nuked it, grew all winter, and had a worse problem the following spring. What I did was rent a sod cutter and removed all the infected dirt and brought in new dirt. It has worked well. POA A sucks and very difficult/expensive to remove in cold climates. In fact my lawn guy told me to just live with it. Unfortunately, POA A doesn't die off like in warmer climates. Good luck 🤞
