When you opened the door to the large hammermill building, I was expecting a huge piece of equipment inside, comparable to the rest of the equipment. You have lots of storage space in that building. You have a huge investment in all that equipment; I hope it serves you well. I enjoy watching the multitude of tasks you perform on a daily basis to keep the business going.

Jan, another great action packed video! Thanks for sharing about the cow behaviors, personalities, and fun facts! Makes me appreciate my glass of milk more! It would be interesting to see the harvest results of your new farm fields from that sprayed precious liquid 'gold' next year. Don't forget to remind us and show some comparisons maybe. Your new efficient feed mill is a wonder! How much do you plan to increase the herd in the near future with such feed expansion? Or was your plan merely for cost savings--which I would be interested in the percentages. Were you inspired by your California dairy farm operations tour and will there be sufficient profit to recoup the expense quickly? Fabulous editing as always!

Jan, I believe your father said in a past video that all the machinery and equipment are “necessary evils” in order to run your operation. Why did you guys decide to use that extendable conveyer over a grain pit? It seems that there is plenty of space for a pit. I mean, you must get a few angry truckers from that setup due to the fact that it takes long time to unload, and the drivers has to stay watch the trailer empty.

With your hammermill is there a sensor that shuts of the drag conveyor so you dont overload the mill?
@ralphvelthuis23592 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have sensors. Once the grain trips the sensor it will start a timer and the auger restarts again after the time you set is reached.
@grantsenio39232 жыл бұрын
@@ralphvelthuis2359 yes that’s same thing with our farmatic mill. I was curious because the mill he has is quite different from my mill. Judging by the setup they must adjust feed amounts at the bin for the ration, where as with our setup all the augers flow in from the roof and there is an accuportaner. I was trying to compare the two mills
@ralphvelthuis23592 жыл бұрын
@@grantsenio3923 quite a bit different from the mill i was used to also. Tiny compared to what i was used to. But i guess you know all about them then. Thought at first you were just asking general questions as someone who's never seen one before.
@ApophisApr2 жыл бұрын
Does the hammer mill do anything to the grain or is it just a connection point for another conveyer/blower system?

It basically mills the grain (Barley, wheat, corn, and/or rye) into flower/meal. Making it easier for the cows to digest.

@MellowYe77ow2 жыл бұрын
The 2 larger bins up front will hold dry distiller's grain and beet pulp. The 4 bigger bins in the back will hold things like: Barley, corn, wheat, and/or rye for milling. The smaller bins near the shed will hold the milled grains from the hammer mill. The bins across from them will hold things like mineral feed.

@MellowYe77ow2 жыл бұрын
Cows don't digest grains well. The grains give them the extra energy that they need to produce the most milk. The grain is milled, so that the cows can digest it properly. You can see what happens if the grain isn't milled properly if you search the channel for the video titled: "We Could've Lost Production Because Of This!!"

It always strikes me how crappy the distributor system is on grain legs. It is screaming for sensors / switches and a panel of lights at the bottom and / or control house that light up based on which bin it is set to feed to. That and some sort of bin and what is in the bin display. There have been some unfortunate accidents like dumping 8,000 bushels of beans into a corn bin because there is no display of what is in each bin, leaving everybody on the farm to remember what is where and when a bin changes for some reason, getting that info distributed and memorized again. Both terrible systems process wise.
@asquithmainlines6992 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, the margin for error might be pretty big. I would be nervous as heck for the first little while until I got comfortable and screwed things up royally.😂 I am sure the automation side of it would come with a steep price tag though. Even then I think Larson’s had that happen last year.
@Wombbatts2 жыл бұрын
@@asquithmainlines699 you can get either proximity or small weather proof roller switches for $30 usd or less, a lamp for $5, a power supply for $30 and a white board for $40 to keep track of what is in which bin. If the manufacturer sells the automation to you they will charge $30,000 for $500 of parts. I used to be an electrical engineer and automation specialist for a company that made million dollar machines, stuff like this isn't rocket surgery. Additionally the selected bin lamp circuit could switch the fill limit sensor to the hammer mill automatically removing another source of error.
