Emma's adoptive Mother was so understanding and thoughtful...there wasn't a lot of understanding about these things in the eighties...well, a bit but not as we do today...and her forethought was beautiful. To understand that Emma wouldn;t have roots...and that she wanted the Mother to see her....beautiful. I hope all the children in this grew up well and had good lives....and that the Mothers who'd left their kids found peace.

@@irenemorley75 that's a ridiculous and short sighted way to think. There are tape victims and victims of extreme abuse who fall pregnant and have nobody to help them and who suffer mental health issues because of their experiences. They deserve help and peace.

@irenemorley75 in those days in the UK in some families having a mixed race baby would have terrible consequences. That's the subtext I'm picking up. White nationalism was huge in 80s Britain. You could get beaten in the street for being the wrong colour. Emma's mother could have been a young white woman in a family of BNP members. People like that would have been utterly abusive to Emma.

I think it was so hard for women to be single mothers, even as late as the eighties. So many landlords wouldn't allow single women with children, benefits were low or non existent, women's wages were lower and they were often told to leave work if pregnant, husband's names were the only ones on leases or deeds.

I was adopted as well as many of my friends in the orphanage. Many got in contact with their birth mothers when we turned 21. Not one of us has had a happy successful relationship with them.

Good grief. God has nothing to do with any of this. These children got saved by human compassion and lets be honest, need. The mothers did the hardest thing imaginable. Options back then were limited. Huge respect to every soul.

In the future...early childhood education is, in my opinion, the only hope. Kids need to know as soon as possible that they are in control of their bodies. Themselves and ONLY THEMSELVES...FULL STOP. That everyone has the right and responsibility of physical autonomy. EDUCATION is the key. Why hide the fact and the law from children 6 and older? No adult has the right to hurt them...and they can't hurt anyone either. Surly 7 year old kids can understand the concept of physical autonomy? So back then.....in the world of FACE to FACE human interaction.... before the internet and social media. Everyone knew everyone's business in the community. The social stigma and family stigma of having a child out of wedlock was VERY EXTREME!! EVERYONE IN YOUR COMMUNITY WOULD KNOW...what you did with that boy or man. You LET HIM have sex with you DIDN'T YOU??!?!? It was the job of a girl and woman and her family to protect the family's VIRTUE. A girl or woman's job too actually fight for their VIRTUE in every way possible! To maintain the family's honor.... Many girls and women die every day saying "NO!" Because a male in the state of sexual arousal CAN (not always but CAN) become violent, and then 7ape..and then to 7ill to cover the crime... 7ape is a man's shame. Pregnancy is a woman's shame. (of course this is sill SO VERY REAL in many places!) Anyway, If you lost your virginity that was one thing... But if you became pregnant, in post war western society, before birth control put a female's destiny in her own hands.....OH BOY!! Who would pay for the baby's food and housing? It was ALWAYS, and USUALLY the female's fault... BUT just what was expected of men.. To have sex with a woman if they had the chance! A girl or woman ALWAYS SHOULD KNOW BETTER! Know where to be, to go and when....despite hormones etc. and know how to protect herself.....when the rubber hit the road. If a girl lost her virginity...it was NOT SO MUCH the boy or man's fault This was just what was EXPECTED OF boys and men, AGAIN to take the chance where they could... only girls & women lived with the consequence. Before DNA And now look what you did!!! That's what lead to baby abandonment ......of course it was all about social/family STIGMA, SHAME AND MONEY. People these days can't imagine how shameful it was then!! Not to be a virgin and have pre-marital sex. Even women in their 20's..even 30's with good paying jobs! ...the social shame and stigma was VERY intense...not just for teenagers. These days most young ones can't possibly imagine why a girl or woman would abandon their baby... But some girls and women still do abandon babies to this day! All depending on circumstance.....
