sporting disaster in UK history, when fans of
Liverpool FC attending the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were caught in a fatal crush that
claimed 97 lives and left 766 injured. Presnted here is footage filmed in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, including interviews with survivors and witnesses who shared their experiences and answered questions on how the crush occurred, and who they believed to be responsible.

Very sad to see this. I think the most poignant moment was seeing the Liverpool scarf hanging off the remains of the fencing. A scarf that probably belonged to one of the victims. Such a sad occasion that did not need to happen. This one is on the police and the police NO MATTER WHAT, whether in the UK or the US will ALWAYS stick together and cover each others back for as long as possible. "Our blood is blue" as they say. Incidents like this and the lies exposed are an example of why there is so much mistrust towards the police. The report about the London Met was appalling. Allegations of racism, sexism, bullying. On and on. Yes of course, there are good officers out there. But think, when you give people power, depending on the character type of that person, they will either use it in a good way or a bad way. Power is a dangerous thing and should not just be handed out so easily. I truly believe all police officers including all rank should go through intensive psychological testing and observation before even being allowed to become a police offer and being granted powers. Yes, this would be a long and tedious and expensive process. But considering Britain is one of the richest countries in the world, surely this could be done. It just won't be done. 1. Because they don't care enough. 2. Because the tories will continue to defund the police. 3. The British are generally stubborn and narcissistic (as proven by their brutal imperial conquests) and believe that they have already 'got it right'.

6:38 Those police submitted honest, written statements. They were all shelved/altered. I vaguely remember this day, even though i was a kid. Out playing with friends, beautiful sunny day, cousin who lived nearby was watching this, and going in and out from his house relaying the news of the match...10 dead, 25, 30, 55 dead, figure kept going up. l'm a liverpool fan from london...and i was an 11 year old when l saw the terrible scenes on BBC TV grandstand live in april 1989...l'm now 46...but those scenes have stayed with me since....and for some of cource directly involved or indirectly effected...the nightmare still continues 35 years on.... At 13:33....l could'nt help but pick up on what the lfc fan was saying, that the lfc chairman told the FA to move the game to old trafford, because of similar problems at hillsborough the season before... from what i've read in recent years.... lt was like with the heysel disaster four years earlier.. When the liverpool and juventus officials told UEFA to move the game to the bernabeau or the nou camp, because of the crumbling state of the heysel stadium at that time..... And both times?....the warning signs were ignored, and the consenquences on those fafeful days were horrific. Even though football has rememembered and move on from the dark years of the 1980s...it sadly still happens now in other countries.... nobody should ever go to a football match and not return home......rip the 97 and also the 39 x

There’s a lot of this footage on the GettyImages app. Very powerful and emotional stuff. Incredible that it took almost 3 decades for the truth to be told officially, even though match going football fans knew what happened almost straight away. If you’d stood on the Leppings Lane terrace in the late 1980’s, which I did 2 months before the disaster, then you knew. I knew it wasn’t the Liverpool fans fault, as soon as I started hearing bits and pieces of what was happening at Hillsborough, from people who had little radios nearby to me at the game I was at on the 15/4/1989. RIP 97 fellow football fans, killed in the most horrendous way possible. Unnecessary and avoidable are 2 words that come to mind straight away. Along with police incompetence and cover up…….

RIP to the 97 from Leeds United. My dad was there in 1987 watching Leeds v Coventry in the Leppings Lane didnt touch the ground for 20 minutes it was that packed in that end. Disaster waiting to happen

I was just one of those people who was meant to attend this match but we couldn’t get tickets! We were from Edinburgh with our boys football club from under 12s team to under 16s at a tournament in York. We had lunch & a meet & greet with the Sheffield Wednesday players on the Friday at Hillsborough with Lee Chapman Ron Atkinson etc & a stadium tour & simply because it was the FA cup Semi Final we couldn’t go to the match so we as a club went to Elland road to watch Leeds Vs Bournemouth in the old 2nd division simply because we couldn’t get tickets. At half time everyone to a man was watching the tv screens in the stand while getting a pie & we all thought it was a riot until we saw people running around carrying there brothers & sisters etc on the advertising boards & then we all realised how serious a situation it was & nobody spoke nobody went back to watch the 2nd half we all stopped and watched what was happening just speechless. Absolute tragedy. Thankfully we didn’t get tickets so I count myself lucky as-there was around 100 kids aged between 12/15 who would’ve been there & due to it being sold out we ended up at Elland Road instead of attending the tragic event which happened in Sheffield. All My thoughts and prayers go to everyone involved or affected by this horrific tragedy and I mean everyone involved as it effected so many more lives & families than the 97 victims because of the negligence that the Yorkshire Police Department caused. Gone but always remembered and You’ll Never Walk Alone. A day that I’ll never forget Heartbreaking still 35 years later it’s still so vivid in my mind & I was a young 13 year old and it still feels very real today. ✌️🙏✌️

I think even to this day, the people who survived that day will still remember every detail which will haunt them even to this day. Going to bed on a night and having nightmares or mentally affecting you, not going to places with crowds, not going to football matches, not watching football in general. I was about 4 months away from being born that day

I noticed every witnessed interviewed expressed helplessness,which is the worst emotion to feel,when you physically are not being able to help someone in a life or dealth situation.Its in our genetic gene's as humans to help others In need.I can only imagine experiencing or witnessing this traumatic,terrifying incident would cause PTSD to all.... I was 12 at the time and was at Villa Park watching the other FA Cup semi final between Everton and Norwich and hearing reports of the game being stopped and deaths. We all hoped it was misinformation and it wasn't until our game ended we found out it was true. Absolute silence on our coaches going home. Duckenfield got away with HIS ineptitude which caused the loss of life. We'll never know why he didn't put the kick off back and ordered his officers to close off the tunnel to the already overcrowded central pens which caused the disaster. RIP to the 97. Everton fan.

How he could not see the two central pens were already seriously overcrowded when he gave the order to open the exit gate to let the fans in remains a mystery. When the fans were escaping the crush by going onto the pitch he was busy radioing back to his superiors asking them to send Police dogs to the ground to control the fans rather than the many ambulances that were actually needed. Duckenfield was way out of his depth being match commander of that game. His decisions cost lives needlessly.

What amazes me the most is that although it has now been converted to all-seater, the Leppings Lane end is still standing in its original structure. It’s currently used to house away fans in its upper tier, and going in as an away supporter knowing what happened in that stand is extremely eerie. Sadly you’re seeing history repeating itself with the establishment trying its hardest to brush the Post Office scandal under the carpet, as they did with Hillsborough for far too long. It is amazing that it's still there compared to other grounds where disasters have happened such as Ibrox, Bolton, Bradford, Moscow, Bastia etc which have long since been bulldozed beyond recognition. If Wednesday can't afford a new stand maybe Liverpool could pay for it instead as a final tribute and ending to the tragedy before moving on for good

With what the police had to work with, it was the police commander's fault for not arranging the channeling of fans to the less full pens. It was either individual police's fault or the fault of the direction of the police commander to them for initially pushing fans back in to the pen. It was the police commander's fault for having police line the halfway mark instead of helping fans early. It was the police commander's / ambulance services fault for only having 2 ambulances on the pitch. However, look what the police had to work with: A badly designed exterior area which created bottlenecks. Sheffield Wednesday's fault. The FA's fault for choosing that stadium. The pressure outside had to be relieved. It was just relieved in an uncontrolled way by the police. The police's fault. Turnstiles that either didn't work or that were old and slow to process. (Also, the perhaps understandable decision to keep the 2 sets of fans apart as much as possible nevertheless meant that far more Liverpool supporters needed to go through each turnstile than was the case for Nottingham Forest). Sheffield Wednesday's fault. The FA's fault for choosing that stadium. An angle of slope to the pens that meant it was difficult for fans to see the density of the pens. Sheffield Wednesday's fault. (Probably not an issue that the FA could be expected to think to take in to account, given that police funnelling was expected). Unyielding perimeter fences. The FA's issue. There'd been crushing before, just without fatalities. A climate of suspicion about hooliganism because of Heysel. And, once the crush was in effect, old crush barriers collapsed, partly because they were so old and partly because they weren't designed for that density. The response to all this was major in safety terms. All seater stadiums and no perimeter fences.

Because in the '70s and '80s, these stadiums were battlegrounds between certain sections of fans it's not like American sports where you see it as just a sport in those days in the UK it was like tribes going to war on a football pitch resulting in barriers going up around the stadiums to stop fans getting onto the pitch to fight with each other or even with players the authorities wanted to keep the fans contained resulting in this disaster too many fans showing up to such a small stadium and the police not policing it correctly and getting overrun and confused with someone making stupid decisions by letting in more fans.

English soccer is followed largely and invariably by the lower and working classes who generally tend to be scum, so they are always fighting each other.

How the Match Commander and Senior Officers in the Police control box perched above the crowd about 50 metres away with a naked eye and with the aid of CCTV and several TV monitors which were directly fixed on the central pens couldn’t see how full these central pens were ,at least 30 minutes before kick off and not have the Foresight to close off all access to the tunnel and employ officers on the concourse area to then filter fans coming through the turnstiles and the fans entering,when the exit gates were open 10 minutes before kick off,to the side wings where there was plenty of standing space is Scandalous.

Not true. Check your facts. There was less people in there than tickets allocated. They were sent to their death by the opening into the middle pen while the sides were practically empty.
