She released her first album when I was a teenager, I spent 20 years collecting everything she ever did, then on a rare occasion I had the whole collection in my car and they stole my car! they gutted it, took everything, I got the car back and the insurance company paid for a brand-new stereo, but I lost an irreplaceable collection that those thieves would’ve just thrown away or is possibly sitting in their mothers bookshelf at home or sold for five dollars at an op shop or buried in the landfill. It was nearly 6 years ago and I still feel the pain

I don't understand why people don't get Courtship. It has one ir the best lyrics on the whole album, it has a lot of great vocal melodies, it has this unique percussion, and is the most uptempo song from Utopia, is the Quicksand from this era. Is easily one of my favorite björk songs and i can't get why you hate it so much. I know you might be expecting a performance of one of the singles or Losss, Sue me, etc... but it seems like Courtship is aslo one of björk favorites. So guys, give it a chance, it's a grower.

The ghosts of old loves Hovering around his orifices, his orifices As you narrate Your own heart-tale You thread souls into one beam The love you gave And have been given Weave into your own dream I trust my cells to re-archive My love historic stream

As beautiful as Utopia is, it's also dense, alienating and eager to break free from the pop song format (no chorus, no hook, freeform structure). The visual component is also getting more and more important (the masks, outfit, set dressing). It's obviously gonna piss off many of her older fans. I like it, but albums like Vespertine and Medúlla are still her best works for me.
@platinumdynamite6 жыл бұрын
I still think it's very much a pop album, you just have to learn to listen to it a little differently.
@iTeacupPanda6 жыл бұрын
I don't feel anything is pop about this . . . if anything I feel like songs like " Hyperballad " and " Joga " which are some of my favorites are closer to pop and are far easier to listen to. I listen to them regularly and have since I was a kid, but I can't get into Utopia that much. ( I love segments, but entire songs? Not so much. ) I respect it though and love the visuals. But has Bjork not always been a visual artist as well?
@christianwheeler83866 жыл бұрын
Everybody ignores homgenic. I loved that album.
@mooksschmooks6 жыл бұрын
fuck vulnicura really hit home for me because for example "black lake" focused on love's unraveling and undoing and i could really, like reaaaally feel her emotion through the whole song/experience. i genuinely cried through half the album. that's what i always liked about björk, even with utopia, she somehow pitch-perfectly puts emotion into a melody and it sort of sends me on a journey everytime i listen to her. So utopia really did it for me too, especially "body memory". idk i'm just weird that way. i grew up with her music (23 now) and i always appreciated that her music is just straight up out of this world and has such a variety in sounds. Homogenic is my favorite album though cause ughs, hunter is just such a gem. oh man i rambled for way too long, sorry, none of the people around me speak björkish, so i had to let it out here ahahah
@TheReeShow6 жыл бұрын
The thing is the record label is only a tool and a medium for her to use as a platform for her artworks. Which is what the "albums" are. But I think if we were free from convention a lot more people would be open to this as art rather than music and entertainment.

one of the exciting things about Björk’s new music when released is that it’s challenging in its own way. there’s much weirder and more complex music out there that is somehow more accessible, but for some reason Björk’s music is some of the most challenging despite it having accessible qualities within. that’s why i love her and i don’t give up on her music after the first listen of a new release. she’s meant to open all of us to more possibilities and to serve as a mirror to our own selves. she’s brilliant. how could anyone that truly loves art ever not like her??

It’s not that we don’t get it, it’s that it isn’t pleasurable to listen to. If something doesn’t sound good, why are you listening to it other than for intellectual masturbation and to say that you "get" it? It’s obnoxious and pretentious. Her previous music was intellectual but didn’t suck ass sonically.

Real art will not please everyone. If it does it's not art, it's bound to the constraints of commercialism. Not to sound elitist. You can sit and pick apart what you don't like about it and how you think it fails but truth is, Bjork has always delivered emotional, honest and thought provoking work which is real art. How she chooses to express herself as an artist is fascinating to me. And I don't think her work is self-indulgent. Certain parts of it you may not listen to every day but it weaves a beautiful, rapturous tale. Personally, I like putting these albums on when I'm studying or reading.

As a long time fan of Bjork, I have always admired her ability to be completely experimental without worry. I like that freedom about her. Some musical growth periods of hers, have been amazing and I really loved them. Some however, have been a little jarring and overly complicated (like this piece). But regardless of what I think, I'm still giving her a thumbs up because of her utter uniqueness. This kind of art is rare.
