I thought I caught a brief glimpse of Dyson Sphere in the trailer. Looking forward to this! Dyson Sphere's always been a game I wanted to get into but couldn't - mainly because I just have so many other games I want to play or irl stuff (being a final fantasy 14 fanboy and self taught web developer doesn't lend itself to learning new complex games like this in a reasonable timeframe, sadly).

17:00 Oh but please do. That is the one thing that put this game above the other factorygames for me personally. I had to think about the angle my solar panels will be receiving light - so normally that would be a belt around the equator... unless you have a tidally locked planet! It kind of blew my mind.

Actually one of the best places to put solar panels are the poles, because the game doesn't account for the incidence angle, and the received light is only true/false (there is like a hard terminator line considered internally). However, as Hadrian shows in 3rd episode, the poles have a realistic polar diurnal cycle, so the solar panels tend to be exposed to the star much longer, meaning they're more efficient over time. Especially on planets with small axial tilt you get to avoid polar nights, but as you said yourself there are tidally locked planets as well, and it's really creative that you get to exploit all these astronomical curiosities.

I do love the aesthetic of the the curvature of the sphere and atmosphere and extra astral bodies you can see in the distance reminds me of a few other games that does something similar. I love when they consider the points 😊

hey Hadrian im loving Your Dyson Sphere Program videos i was woundering if You have played a game called The Riftbreaker its very much like DSP but its all on one world but lots of maps that You have to jump between but its leans more onto the base defence side of things if You haven't seen or played it i would say give it a look.

@@HadrianLP It's a different game altogether and hardly comparable with anything you actually value in DSP. However, you might give it a shot if you're taking a break and want something similar but more action-y. I was hooked on it for a week and some more, pretty decent and has a very good tech and solid ideas, but it's ultimately juvenile. More in depth: DSP is a much more robust game, much more zen as you put it, while Riftbreaker is like Factorio's younger brother who's not that much into building and hmm moments but likes to pew pew, crash and burn. I'm of your sort, I think all of these games are too much neglecting the over-exploitation aspect and latently endorse complete neglect of ecosystems, pretending like it's perfectly normal to go onto an alien planet and simply butcher all life, only to pave everything over while extracting radioactive materials. They all typically struggle to implement some sort of self-awareness commentary (or mechanism like Factorio's pollution) as a PR move to wash their hands and softly instruct you that the game they've made shouldn't be considered as an instruction manual for life. But unless you're 9 you simply have to feel like a total dick while playing. Riftbreaker is especially bad at this.

@@HadrianLP np I might do it more often if you find it useful, as a game dev I tend to be pretty resourceful given that I go through these things semi-professionally. btw, I also wanted to confirm what you said: DSP is one of the best engineered titles in recent times; it's done in Unity, and I've been working with Unity for 15 years. the level of mathematical (and architectural) genius required to pull this game of is through the roof. It actually made me step up my skills (like Minecraft before it), as I couldn't sleep or play anything until I convinced myself that I knew my quaternions and shaders at a level that enables me to make such a game one day :)

It would be nerve-wracking to introduce a game this important to me (but also this new to the channel) when the channel was going full-speed, but doing it as my second new series after 2+ years away is intense. Intentional, because I want to play what I love ... ... but intense. :-D
