A plan that would drastically change downtown Salt Lake City with a "sports, entertainment, culture and convention district" surrounding a remodeled Delta Center has cleared its first major hurdle.
The Salt Lake City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to endorse a partnership agreement with Smith Entertainment Group - the parent owner of the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club - on a downtown revitalization plan on Tuesday. The vote sends the proposed 136-page document to a state committee for approval before the agreement can be finalized.
If the agreement is finalized, the City Council will vote later this year on whether to approve a 0.5% sales tax increase and proposed zoning changes to accommodate the plan's development.
"This is a good agreement that brings good things to the city," said Salt Lake City Council Chairwoman Victoria Petro, prior to the meeting. "As we move forward with this, I'm sorry for the people who feel against and the fear, but I've moved from fear to determination. … It is scary and big, but it's in the best interest."

I agree on the taxing and I would have fought and argued that SEG needed to come up with something different. The Smiths own a lot of businesses around the SLC area so they have a LOT of pull in the politics of Salt Lake City itself and surrounding areas BUT tax payers shouldn't have to pay taxes to make Ryan Smith more wealthy that benefits him and his own interests, I have an issue with that too, especially the poor man scraping to get by to make the wealthy man more wealthy where the poor man gets nothing, maybe he's not interested in basketball or hockey so he gets stuffed, thats not right, I agree with that argument

Before everybody goes gaga at how impressive all of this Flash Gordon approval process is in SLC, one thing that is woefully ignored - or at least not mentioned - is the fact that Utah is trying to get the bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics. The IOC votes on assignment of those Games on 24 July - this year. That's thirteen days from now folks. They are feverishly trying to pack all of these improvements as a done deal into their presentation. And if there is a chance - in this case more of a probability - that several new venues for the Olympics can be had with significant third party funding, then this becomes a win-win. Lest people not forget that all of those transit improvements were fast-tracked for the 2002 Winter Olympics. And since those Games were considered more or less a success (bribery and rigging charges not withstanding), this "entertainment district" is a continued enhancement of that same strategy. Salt Lake was a bit of an underdog for the 2002 Games, but since they are now in that club of prior host cities with experience in hosting them, it becomes a favorable odds bet that SLC will get them again, and this only improves their chances...What I get tired of though is everybody throwing shade at Oakland, KCMO, Phoenix, and other cities for being slower and more clench fisted with their civic funds, and taking longer in due process for these projects. They should. Salt Lake has always been an outlier in the sports world, with the Olympics and the LDS Church as hammers to drive the nail. Those other cities do not have hole cards of this scale as a backup...
@FlyAndMTB
@FlyAndMTB 27 күн бұрын
Your point becomes moot by the fact that nobody else is going to be bidding for the 2034 games. It's already been well established that SLC will be the winner by default. Also, the Olympic committee has already stated that this project will not play a factor in their decision to award the games to SLC.

Japantown has already been destroyed. It was a thriving Asian community until the Second World War, where a lot of its residents were shipped off to an interment camp in central Utah called Topaz. A lot of the remaining residents fled or moved elsewhere in the state due to Japanese persecution at the time. It was bought up by other communities in SLC and then eventually bulldozed to make way for the salt palace. All that remains of Japantown as of right now, is a Japanese Church of Jesus Christ, the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, and a Japanese Garden.

@@jameslongstaff2762 There’s a school of thought that the league has actually owned the team since Jerry Moyes tried to declare the Coyotes bankrupt and sell them to Jim Balsillie. The league actually did repossess the franchise from Moyes after taking the matter to court. The thing is that none of the “buyers” since then actually had the money to do anything with the franchise. Alex Meruelo, if anything, had more money than the previous guys, but has a terminal condition in being unable to work well with others. What the NHL (aka THE OWNERS) really wanted was what Ryan Smith eventually gave them… protection of THEIR franchise values. Arguably, the NHL doesn’t deserve that much.
