First-Year Experience Peer Facilitators at the College of Charleston

Our First-Year Experience Peer Facilitators (PFs) are one of a kind! They are successful students who dedicate their time and efforts in assisting other students to become successful at the College of Charleston.
Even before their first day as a PF, these faculty nominated students exemplify skills and abilities in leadership; demonstrate the understanding regarding the important aspects associated with a successful transition into college; and exhibit the enthusiasm, compassion, and dedication to the Peer Education program. PFs receive training (TEDU 205 course and workshops) to enhance their already exceptional and extraordinary qualifications.
PFs are linked to First-Year Experience Seminars (FYSE) and Learning Communities (LC). They work closely with their assigned faculty member, students, and with the Center for Excellence in Peer Education staff.
PFs lead a 50 minute Synthesis Seminar (FYSS) once a week during the semester. All their students within the FYSE or LC course are required to attend each weekly Synthesis Seminar. The PF creates a syllabus that contains curricular and co-curricular aspects associated with the course, and to the overall enhancement of the students’ successful transition and continuation at the College of Charleston. They also hold office hours at the Center for Excellence in Peer Education facilities to meet one-on-one with their students throughout the semester.
PFs work with their students on a wide variety of topics! In addition to specific topics related to the particular FYSE or LC course, PFs also guide their students on what/how to use resources on the College of Charleston campus, review tips on how to be academically successful, and address common transitional challenges that many students encounter their first-year in college.
