First Year PhD Student Advice - 20 Things to do Early in Your PhD

PhD student advice for first year. At the beginning of my PhD it was a bit difficult to know what to do and where to get started. Along the way I have figured out a lot of useful activities, and why it would be a good idea to do these things early on in your PhD. So I am sharing them with you! I am sharing 20 things you should do early in your PhD, however, if you are later stage you might still find something that you haven't done yet and may want to consider. I really hope this will be helpful to anyone in any stage of the PhD or if you are considering doing a PhD. Highly important. Without a break I did a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and began a PhD but my mental and physical health suffered greatly. The continuous studying and researching made me develop uncontrollable panic attacks and I had to stop for a while. Too much electricity in the brain is not good!

Lots of great advice. On the personal side, get very clear with why you want a PhD and whether you want a PhD. Be at peace with that or get out before you waste your youth. On the operational side, your number one and two priorities in the first years are to learn your field and select a research topic. Read papers. Not textbooks - you'll get that through coursework. Read the actual classic and contemporary research papers getting published in the conferences and journals that you want to publish in. This is how you learn the state of your art and find a space for yourself that's worth occupying.

I am about to be a senior at a university, chemical engineering degree, i am thinking about PhD as we speak. I am so excited about it. You can also use diital tracking and project management programs like Monday.com or Trello or Asana. These are very useful tips

I think it depends on the supervisor. My supervisor has actually been on sabbatical since I began so we tend to email more so and meet every couple of weeks. Is it possible for you to meet them via a video call? It also depends on what you feel you need, if you feel like you need more/less supervision then I think it's good to express that to them.

Hi Kritika, I think competition is very dependent on what specific field you work in. I don't know much about post-doc as I'm only in first year so it's not something I'll be looking in to any time soon but hopefully in the future.

I just passed the exam and the interview for my PhD program , I hope to start in sep 2020. Since March my life has been in deep mess , ,my girlfriend of five years dumped me suddenly, I wasn’t so sure if I could even sit for the exam let alone pass it , but thank God I pull myself together. Hi Claire! I generally use templates that can be uploaded. I use overleaf which makes it possible to share drafts. Pretty much everyone uses latex in my lab so it’s not much of a problem with regards to sharing. It is also possible to share the pdf with them and to get comments on that. Sometimes I still use pages/word when I am just exploring a topic. But when I am writing a paper for a specific conference or writing something which requires many references latex is easier

Hello. I am a mature student with a BSc (Hons) and a Masters in Computer Science and Advanced Computer science and I am starting a PhD program in Jan 2023 at Salford in Manchester in Robotics. I am currently in the same boat as you where! Where do I start and what should I be doing? I also believe I will be doing some lecturing as well. Some great advice. I have no idea if I am having an office / desk at uni and have already setup my home office. No idea how where I would look for my research topic conferences and how to find who is leading in my topic. I need to improve my programming and searching for papers and key words to narrow stuff so any advice would be appreciated. 3 Years is my Program in the UK but can go to year 4 if needed. I am doing a Viva PhD rather than a published PhD as I am rusty after taking a couple of years off. Great vids and look forward to continuing watching.

Well physical health is a huge part of mental health so be sure to focus on both! I am planning a video about this at the moment.
