She has one of the tallest and skinniest super structures. Inside it has a spiral staircase. Only ship I’ve had the past few years with such a thing. I’ll be taking the Happy River out tonight and down the Lake. She brought LNG tanks into Sturgeon Bay, WI. I was her Pilot out of S. Bay and down to Burns Harbor Indiana where she loaded scrap Stainless Steel for Antwerp. She had a couple containers to discharge this morning and then containers to load. Her next stop is Cleveland to load more containers before start long her voyage to Antwerp. Great Captain and crew onboard to work with.

Nate! Oh, my goodness! Please come back for more comments and future videos. You are an expert. All of us Boat Friends look for people like you to ask questions and have fun with. This is fantastic. First-hand knowledge. Was it difficult to navigate during turns? How quick did the engine respond when you needed it? The super structure was unbelievably tall from my vantage point. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your comment. What a great perspective my friend. All the best to you. Be safe out there on the water brother.👍⛴️

A heartfelt hello from the Netherlands! It's funny to see how you look in Duluth at a ship that can be seen daily for us here in the ports. We then look with admiration at the ships that are more or less your regular guests. And so we are all, anywhere in the world, a bit of a family of ship spotters

@@vibewithmike Hi Mike, Because I myself come from a family of seagoing and inland navigation skippers, my interest in ships has always been there. The great thing about your videos is that you keep it so wonderfully pure. Just observe what comes in and goes out. Provides the right information and that under all weather conditions. I'd love to look at it! You can regularly find me at both the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and yes, ships like the MS "Happy River" sometimes pass by. Maybe I'll get around to making videos myself, but for now I'll stick to photography. Keep up the good work with your nice videos. I am a fan!!!!

Mike has got yellow on his mind. Sailing vessel Big Bird, now this monster lift ship Happy River. Talk about a contrast! Without question, this ship ranks up there as one of the coolest, most interesting ships to ever arrive in Duluth....at least in my mind. I can't imagine the challenges of trying to safely balance their loads. This is one of their R-type vessels. This fleet has 4 heavy transport ships, 21 heavy lift ships, and 50 other assorted ships. Huge company. Huge. Prior to arriving in Duluth, they dropped off in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin some HUGE LNG tanks from Port Colborne, Canada. Those tanks were going to be placed into a bunkering ship currently under construction. I first saw this ship back in 2019 when it delivered some huge wind turbine blades to Duluth. Let's hope we continue to see this ship....or other Big Lift vessels many more times in the future. They are so interesting!

Hi Jeanne. That's a great question. Yes, there are stringent international laws and regulations covering this subject. Basically ships have to either exchange their ballast or treat it. And local ports can also add in additional refinements to the law. I'll send Mike a great link which explains it all....including an informative video. He then might add the link. Hope you post more questions in future videos.

you definitely got a good shot on a heavy lift geared cargo ship. not a common sight for your area.

Is a pilot required to be on board when entering Duluth? The port of Los Angeles does require pilots. For Duluth I guess my answer is 'no' because in all the videos I have seen there is never a boat dropping off a pilot. But then who is guiding this yellow snip from the Netherlands?

Yes a pilot is required. In fact the pilot (Nate) has replied to this video. If you scroll down you will find his comment.

@@chuckg6039 I scrolled down looking for comments about pilots. Lots of talk about this yellow ship, what fun to see it, but nothing with "Nate" attached to it. Should I look elsewhere for his 'pilot' explanation?

Ralphy! I definitely have noticed this. What’s even more interesting, the smaller ships have the loudest horn! I wonder why? Being out on the ocean you think you’d want more distance?

I'm trying to use the Google microphone to make a comment and it just keeps making so many mistakes. Is there anybody else out there who's getting frustrated because? The microphone can't get 10 English words properly.
