TM Krishna: Ragam Sahana

TM Krishna was the featured artiste at the FEA-curated KARNATIC MODERN 3-day tour in Mumbai in December 2016. The Concert, held at Veer Savarkar Auditorium in Shivaji Park, Dadar was scheduled for Day 2.
TM Krishna was accompanied by Akkarai Subhalakshmi on violin, Praveen Kumar on mridangam, Chandrasekhara Sharma on ghatam and Rithvik Raja and Bhavik Mankad on tanpuras.
The first piece of the evening was the exquisite Ragam Sahana featuring a composition by Thyagaraja entitled Emaanadicchevo.

I get a feeling that for as long as I live, I will keep coming back to this performance. There is something else here. Even for Shri TMK, I think in this performance he is on a different plane. It's almost like TMK has defined the raga. Not to forget, Akkarai Subhalakshmi following him with extreme fidelity. The perfectly timed pulses of the mridangam and ghatam. Last and definitely not the least, the absolutely superb recording quality I can just get lost here.

In alaap swara prasthara manodharmam was different compared to normal Sahana heard. Intricacies are culled out beautifully and the violinist beautifully acknowledged by her gestures and rendition. Kudos to all.

Incredibly, the northern version of Sahana is attributed with more intense notes, but I like this approach, especially the lower octave on which it concluded, it's more peaceful.

TM Krishna is the Lang Lang of Carnatic music. His performances are filled with exaggerated drama. TMK's music is certainly above the ordinary... but not by much. For real talent, look at musicians like Abhishek Raghuram and Kunnakudi Balamuralikrishna... and, of course, Akkarai Subhalakshmi, probably the finest of the new generation violinists.

The true value of Indian classical music to the human soul is it's inherent ability to slow time down for us. The greatest musicians in both genres have this in their music. should you wish to experience this , do listen to Pt. Kumar Gandharva's Puriya Dhanashree, Malkauns or Shree. TMK has this in this music. Abhishek Raghuram is a brilliant and humble young artiste. His own music will evolve. Let's not forget TMK himself in his early years used to sing differently. For me, his music is an unfolding of the aesthetics of the carnatic music and this raga.

T M Krishna is an exemplary artist with almost same kind of eternal implementation of raga. But i have always distinction with his approach of raga visthara, manodharma and swara prasthara. The main thing i want to highlight here is that, Sahana(Vakra sampoorna ragam) is quick flowing raga with different zigzag pattern. Its not much plain, But after he sung the raga, it became so plain, that itself is showing the vulgarity of the artist. Our Carnatic music is not so plain as Hindustani, My humble request to you is that, don't try to elapse it like Hindustani, it wont reach the ears of audience for much time.

He used to sing faster tempos in his early singing.. maintaining balance and swaras in slow tempo is a lot more difficult. Its easier to conceal lapses in quicker speeds .
