firsthandaccount Cool, yeah the 50 Summilux ASPH is absolutely amazing. Never tried to 21mm because I can’t afford much these days. Honestly the one thing they don’t mention is the M10 is weird about highlights. I was able to recover them much better on the Q and even the M240 when I briefly had it (was too thick and I didn’t care for the colors at the time).

Filled with some misinformation that I would just like to address, please don't take this personally. Mirrorless cameras don't get more light on the sensor than a mirrored camera. Also, up until 2 years ago there where no purpose build cine lenses from Leica, so the Leica R series lenses, which where most popular in the cinematography industry where only used in small budget short movies and indie films. Also the term Summilux, Summicron and so forth all state that the lens has an exact aperture value of 1.4 or 2.0 respectively. There are certain lenses where this is not the case, but also Leica admits that they are not true Summilux or Summicron lenses, but they still perform nearly as good and are designed to be as close to their siblings as possible. Besides that I totally agree with the fact that this is an amazing camera that is still worth buying.

I have the M10 and the Q. I still shoot a lot with the Q. It’s way lighter than the M10 and it’s tough enough to sling in your bag and go. And don’t forget, the M10 doesn’t have a built-in EVF. A neat feature on the Q is the screen touch to focus and fire. Press anywhere in the scene showed on screen and it focuses and takes a shot. I quite like 28mm. Apparently iPhones are also 28mm.

It is also worth mentioning that the Leica Q is a modern mirrorless camera with a built-in EVF (excellent) and supports both AF (very fast) and MF (excellent, with a distance scale). It is not a rangefinder like the M series and is easy to focus in both AF and MF.

Leica was established in 1913... the Q is a good choice in stead of a 28 mm lens for your M. You have a 50 on the M and don't need to change. The Q is great!
@ericzhang42436 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you said, but a small correction - the summilux designation is only to say that the lens can reach an aperture of f/1.4 wide open ✌️ Their summi/crons/ are usually their /sharpest/, and most clinically perfect.

Nice video. I have been shooting with the Leica for about the same amount of time as you have and i love it. I traded all my Fujigear to be able to buy it and still shoot Nikon for the more demanding tasks but i find myself shooting the most with my Q to be honest. And exactly as you say there is something that makes me want to pick it up and shoot with it hehe..not sure what kind of trickery they molded into the camera body but there is definitely something ;) Only downside would be the price and sometimes i almost feel guilty having so much cash tied up into a camera that might end up being worth nothing in a while, but at the same time its the kind of camera that will most likely last a long long while both when it comes to the physical properties of the camera but also in IQ and just how versatile and good this camera is. For me its perfect except for maybe a few tweaks in the FW making it able to choose Touch AF and tie it to a Fn button or making it able to choose that ina simpler way than having to go through the menu for example. Otherwise, such a great camera. Cheers.

I really liked the Q, when I owned it. It's AF was impressive for sure and one of its high points of this camera in uses. I use this kind of camera for jpgs because I'd used it as a travel camera and around town. I don't want to process those kinds of photos; and because of that I lean towards Fuji because I adore its jpg color science. Other than that, I would still give the Q high ratings in 2018.

Well said. Compared to how much people spend on cars, owning a Leica is relatively cheap. Only thing I’d debate is usually the slower lenses are sharper. There are far more trade offs designing a 1.4 or 0.95 than a 2.0 or 2.8.

I remember when I was new to photography! Welcome! In photography, bokeh (/ˈboʊkə/ BOH-kə or /ˈboʊkeɪ/ BOH-kay; Japanese: [boke]) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light".

Thanks for your info. I have a Q and absolutely love it. Built first rate and the look of the photos is like no other brand. Have you ever printed Q photos? I have been a staunch film person for a long time. I was planning on either a Leica S or a newer Phase One system. However, I was in Las Vegas last summer and viewed big Hassleblad prints and also recently at the Leica store in Bellevue and was not at all happy. The print of the S2 at the Leica store approx 11x14 was not at all what I was expecting, though the manager stated that he really didn't know much about printing. Of course when you spend that kind of money it should have looked much better out of camera that what I saw. I'm pretty sure the prints from the William Carr gallery in Vegas were shot using a Hassleblad. While they looked nice from a distant, on closer look I wasn't as impressed. I've seen a lot of 8x10 film printed big and it wows me everytime. I have a Mamiya 7ii and I think the prints look very nice. I shoot a lot of black and white with Ilford and print on fiber base. Just wondering if you've printed anything with the Leica Q. I love it otherwise.
@firsthandaccount5 жыл бұрын
Print quality is insanely nice with the Q as long as you keep the files within the latitude the files have to offer! I’ve printed 24x36’s many times before and they look incredible. Epson Stylus Pro prints on Juniper Bayta Rag to be more specific!

That might be the best 28mm lens any manufacturer has ever put on a fixed-lens body, but thats the problem, it's a ton of money and you can't change lenses. At the end of the day, a Ricoh GR can do 85% of what this camera can do (incl macro) for 1/7th the price, and the Ricoh fits into a pocket, where the Leica is always around your neck or on your shoulder. If the idea is to bring the camera with you, the Leica's non-retractable lens makes it far less convenient to bring along, which is the most important part of owning a camera (always having it with you).
@firsthandaccount6 жыл бұрын
So true. Leica has some of the best lenses in the world I totally agree! Definitely feel you on the Ricoh GR too. That camera is absolutely amazing and I would say can do more than %80 of what the Q can do, the Leica ecosystem really is just for people obsess like myself haha
@ropersix6 жыл бұрын
The Ricoh GR doesn't have a touch screen, and when using a 28mm, I think that's a huge shortcoming. 28mm often means you're trying to compose a more complex photo (than with a longer lens), with more elements in it, which means AF will be of limited use. And manually moving the focus point is just plain slower and more annoying (this is 2018, even my cheap Android phone has touch to focus). Plus, the GR has no EVF, which can be a problem outside sometimes. That said, I liked my GR until it stopped working (salt water I think), and am now thinking about a Q. But yeah, I don't exactly have the money right now :/
@t0odamnfast6 жыл бұрын
Timothy Roper I always zone focused the GR with one of the function buttons. No AF system got me from 1.5m to infinity any faster than I can toggle it with the fn buttons. Also, the Leica Q doesn’t fit into your pocket, so you’ll subsequently leave it behind more frequently. It’s why I actually feel the GR, is a better camera overall if you’re dedicated to 28mm. Otherwise, if you’re really considering the Q, just dig a little deeper for the M and a 28mm Summicron, ultimately I think you’d be happier because you can explore other focal lengths down the road.

As a poor enthusiast, with some experience of the Q (a colleague has one, and he bought it used for 2k) I can say that, sure, it feels well built and is nice to look at, has great optics and what not. But would I pay 4k for it? Never. But that's the responsible family father talking. It's just like watches (think Rolex). They are completely unnecessary to have. There are cheaper alternatives that does the job just as well. But if you are a Bachelor and/or have money to spend, and want to have a luxurious accessory, then why not? It all comes down to emotions in the end - how you feel about things. It's not about image quality or anything practical. It's just that good feeling having a nice piece of gear in your hands. Am I wrong?
@MiCoopRS6 жыл бұрын
Yes.... totally wrong! Ok you have a family and MUST think about your Kids and wife... do not knock the "Beauty and completely unnecessary" so are GOOD tires but I see people cheap out and say a TIRE IS A TIRE.... the Comment that the others do the JOB just as well.... NOPE.... every camera has a FINGERPRINT.... You should maybe try looking at a Leica TL2 with a 23mm lens....compare the Q to the TL2..... maybe Leica has camera days... they let you borrow a camera for 24 hours... save your Money, really, you can have NICE things!
@alexanderhugestrand6 жыл бұрын
MiBenzAMG-45, I get that about tires. But cheap tires do NOT do a good job keeping people safe! So there's an actual difference, and IMHO it's not even a good comparison. Now, what is it that you get with a Q that you won't get with another camera? We went on a conference trip and everyone who enjoys photography brought their camera. One Leica Q, one Fuji X-T1, and me myself brought a Canon 6D with a 35mm lens. All the Leica did, in my eyes, was to look gorgeous (and lightweight of course). But who got some of the best images? Me. We all got great image quality from our cameras, so there was no practical difference between them in that sense. My kit was pretty lightweight too. The only thing that the Leica might give you, that my Canon doesn't, is a nice experience. But that's an emotional thing again. And I believe I'll get that with a Fuji X100F too when I buy one - the poor mans Leica. ;-)
@firsthandaccount6 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree about justifying the price. iPhones are more accurate at telling time than a Rolex but some people do prefer to spend their money on those luxury items, nothing against them. I argue about the technical aspects. Spielberg, Nolan, Kubrick, etc, wouldn’t choose Leica glass almost every time if it didn’t do something unique. Leica glass coatings produce a sharper image and a more naturalistic reproduction of the colors in the original scene. There is a ton of data to back that up. That being said, it’s not like there aren’t lenses as sharp, or you can always add sharpening in post and replicate the Leica look with other cameras.

I totally agree. Having the 50mm crop be 12mp is pretty ridiculous in today’s day and age

I have the Q. The quality is great, for sure, but it's not as special as the M-both in terms of feel and construction.

For sure! Nothing beats that M experience!

Agreed. That’s why I’ll never let my M8.2 go. I still love it.

Yes its brass vs magnesium. Brass feels tougher in handling

You keep using that word, simplistic. I do not think it means what you think it means.

treating complex issues and problems as if they were much simpler than they really are - aka Leica’s design sensibility ☺️

Stupid question alert. Can it shoot video?

It can! Autofocus is spotty but it does shoot 4K! No LOG profile tho!

Still worth it in 2020? Probably Not. There are many more cheaper and more advanced cameras on the market today. The reason I love the Q is just the lens and quality pictures of this camera. If the Q had a flip screen, a good EVF, a bigger buffer, it would still be worth it. Even Q2 I don't think is worth it, although it's just last year's model. But, I love my Q and hate it at the same time.

do you think sony a7r 3 camera is still worth it?

@@nulu5000 This camera is from 2017, but I think still worth. Of course there are new version a7r IV.

I don’t know a lot about camera’s, would you recommend the Sony 6400 or 6600 or canon Eos r or Sony a7r and then the newest version
@nulu50004 жыл бұрын
Because I want to make travel video’s with good quality
@DG-rm2fn4 жыл бұрын
@@nulu5000 you must first compile a list of criteria that are relevant to you when choosing a camera. Now it looks like you haven’t decided yet what you want because the cameras you mentioned are in different categories. If video is a priority for you, then full-frame expensive cameras are not required. Video is better developed by Panasonic cameras.

4000 dollar Leica q will be a 4000 dollar paperweight in the next 3 years! Not when, lenses company are too eager to partner with big cellphone makers! Example ziess lenses at least what I heard is partnering with Samsung to create 1.8 f 50 millimeter lenses installed in its phone! That shit is freaky..

Who cares if people look at your camera at a Coffee Shop! I like it because it is discreet. I feel vey uncomfortable carrying a 5D M2 with 70x200 Glass.

Empowers new clothes.... When you view unbiased reviews it's clear it's not a class leader at all, yes image quality is good but not at high ISO's and it falls behind less expensive cameras in most areas whilst not exelling in any.
